Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

Some thoughts on the newsletter...

Willing to give this a try, but it seems like an odd idea. After all, you don't get anything from being Elite other than knowing that you are, right?... and while it used to mean "Woah, dangerous player there" it will now mean "Could be dangerous, could be an acomplished explorer/trader"

Im seeing it more like if a rich player who advanced through trading/mining, has to cash to simply drown you in either firepower by exiting as many anacondas as we want from hangars or that he can put infinite bounties on your head :p So yea, money is "dangerous".

I'm curious to see what the ship outfitting and galaxy map overhauls are. The map looked pretty slick to me already.

It's actually pretty bad right now. Hard to navigate, and lots of other issues. Looking forward to any improvements in this area.

The Nav Beacon outside LP is hopping tonight. Could barely hop in before getting torn to shreds.

Saw Cmdr Texas Stu getting interdicted too =( Godspeed, you gold farting saint.

Apparently gamma is bringing separate reps for each stream of infamy. The status screen is also showing current rebuy cost, very neat!

Hah! It's almost insulting (but pretty great) how every pilot starts as pennyless, aimless, harmless. At least its not calling you ugly and stupid, I guess!

That's an interesting change that I kind of like. So I'm guessing that the combat rating of "harmless" ranks all the way up to "elite" like in the old games, but I wonder what the levels of rank names will be for trading and exploring? Or maybe just the starting out ranks are "harmless, penniless, aimless" and they all follow identical naming conventions from there on up?

Still, pretty cool. I love the UI design in this game.

So how is this game on on DK2 and on a GTX 980? I want to purchase but I think I might wait considering release date is nearing and I can save $25 off.

Well that GTX980 is overkill for the DK2 or Elite TBH unless you want to push for 4K.

Why are you worrying about $25 when you have just got a GFX card that pricey alongside a relatively new DK2?

:)

The DK2 is legit amazing, even if there are still issues here and there (some stutter while supercruising, maps are harder to navigate and some text you may find yourself leaning forward to read it better) if you already have it Elite is a super easy recommendation. A good hotas joystick also helps.

Well, I could see some overlap on some rank names, like average and competent (and certainly elite, at the top) but I can't see an explorer or trader achieving "dangerous". We shall soon see.

-edit-

I actually doubt a GTX980 can currently keep a stable 75fps near a space station at max settings even at 1080, but lowering graphics just a bit it should work really well, yup.

VR requirements are serious business.

My 660ti never gave me performance issues bad enough to cause nausea with the DK2 with all settings maxed out, you'll be fine.

They might change Dangerous and Deadly but the rest work!

Interesting. I thought that this release wouldn't see a wipe before the 16th launch but I guess there is a possibility:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=23758&page=165&p=1037177#post1037177

I'm personally kind of done "testing" and looking to start! I can learn as I go. So this is somewhat of a disappointment but also understandable if the need arises.

That ruined my day. Thanks.

Yeah, that really sucks for the people who paid for the early access. Now I'm really glad I held off until after the 16th of December!!!

Hopefully they don't need to wipe again after gamma.

I suppose they could do a partial wipe, and give us our credits back for release. I'd be fine with that. Just don't do a full wipe of a month of gamma progress!

Imagine walking around inside this thing...
This game is gonna be fucking mind-blowing in 1 or 2 years if they keep the same level of quality for the expansions.

I like the idea of a variety of player ships being flown at launch due to Gamma progress. Seeing Sidewinders everywhere isn't very exciting.

Seeing a bunch of asps and anacondas camping the starting sectors wrecking new players is even less exciting.

If this were Star Citizen, you'd be paying $600 real world bucks for that baby.

#PraiseBraben

Well "Technically" you would be paying 600 towards the creation of the game, and you would get a nifty ship in return....
890 Jump owners may disagree....
Heh.
Cant wait to own that Orca and carry 1 Tonne of Algae in style!

Another huge freaking change log. And probably some more for gamma on saturday hehe :)

Seems like they changed the mission system a lot. Also seems that they have the sol system ready, but they dont make it available yet, likely gamma.

Other interesting bits ( to me )

-"Bumped up the size of the stars in the galaxy map (but not the environment capture) by 50%"

- "Support for starports in supercruise added . " What is this one? Will we see starports in supercruise now?

- "Allowed the player to supercruise through the visual gaps in the rings without getting mass-locked " YES!

- "When leaving supercruise safely at a station, ring or asteroid cluster (notably, not interdiction), use an 8km arrival zoom . " ? Will that create a zoom ala hyperspace?

-" Memory optimisations for hyperspace effects"
- "More subtle colour on hyperspace wake"

- "You can now scan asteroid clusters to the basic level, much like planets, etc"
- "Greatly reduced the execution time for the texture generations in all planet types. " This might remove some of the stutter?

- "Reworked real stars renderer to improve the performance"

-" Stars of classes without dedicated noise files now calculate which noise file is best suited for them, based on temperature. This should provide better visuals for Wolf-Rayette, carbon stars, and proto-stars."

I'd rather everyone have an even start on release day, not wiping the gamma progress is stupid.

You're basically prolonging what will be like a week and then we'll see the same thing. All of that will happen anyway. You'll have the people that play 24/7 and the people that "don't have a chance until later this week".

I would rather get started early, just wipe the discovery stuff and rank. Keep credits and ship stuff. Right now I really have no inclination to play. I've seen it in the DK2, I've mapped my X55, I've flown around having some fun ... but if everything is going to be wiped, I'd rather save all the exploration and mining until I know it 'means' something.

Oculus Specific:

- Updated Oculus SDK to version 0.4.3
- Fix for spinning ship on loading screen disappearing while wearing the Oculus Rift
- Fix for unable to turn on fullscreen mode when Oculus is set to Direct mode (even if not rendering to it).
- Alt-Enter (fullscreen toggle) no longer works on the Oculus Rift
- Galaxymap billboards rotating when using Oculus Rift fixed

The amount of polish here is immense. The warp animation when exiting SC for a dock is great, as are the little animations when you enter the Starport Services menu; all of the separate pieces of the dock fly in and assemble into the dock icon. Amazing.

Agreed. Very impressive. Looking forward to seeing some of the new missions, especially those that chain.
