Emily Rogers: Splatoon Switch is not a sequel, allegedly. Same for Mario Kart.

Let's be honest, enhancing old Nintendo games is a legal way to print money. It will also help them to not have so much downtime in between games being released.

If they can get the right price (I'm guessing $249) and have the new Mario as a pck-in included this new game machine could do very well for Nintendo.

I think Nintendo should definitely price the enhanced ports cheaper for everyone actually. It would make the console more appealing for everyone.
Most people didn't play Wii U games, Nintendo can get away with selling them at a full retail price though games like Splatoon were always somewhat budget price

But why do you need an MK9? The hardware doesn't necessarily allow for a 4K HDR ground up game. Why not just build on the foundation of MK8 and Smash, add more content and features, and keep the game fresh. Then you can use the resources to work on new big games for this generation.

I'm guessing that is what's going to happen. MKWii and MK7 also look like they're running on updated versions of MK:DD's engine.

Hmm, I should probably sell my Wii U copies now. I don't even play the system much anymore. Might just keep the exclusives that probably won't be ported (Bayo 1+2, Star Fox, and Budokai Tenkaichi 3 Wii) .

I found a great fan art on Twitter regarding the new Splatoon. Simply beautiful!

I think they should include a big name pack-in. get the excitement up, get people rationalizing the cost. go big baby. didn't SNES launch with SMW in the US? not sure, but something of that caliber is in order.

These games will be new experiences for a lot of people, and they will keep Switch players pretty busy.

I think this porting strategy is a very good approach. The original games will come down the line.

I'd also be crazy for Nintendo to make a new Mario Kart engine for each new game.
I'm fine with this.

Yeah, if it ain't broken don't fix it. MK already got the much needed shake up with MK8, now with that great engine as a base, I can't wait to see how they improve upon it further.

Since I skipped Wii-U, it's good news for me. Hope there's a discount for Wii-U supporters though!

Pretty much this.

There would be a small uproar from the half dozen or so folks who had Wii U's ;)

Seriously though, people would be PISSED if they didn't discount or /REACHING/ do purchase transfers :o

I want enhanced port of more WiiU games to be honest, I won't have to buy a WiiU and an NX that way.

Same here - there's a bunch of Wii U games I want to play, but I'm not interested in picking up a Wii U. And I suspect that will be true for a good amount of other folks.

Really hoping for some discount for owners of the Wii U games. I bought mine physically, though, so I think that lowers the chances for me (unless Nintendo can arrange something with retailers, don't know if any of that is feasible).

I think they should pack in a 3rd party game personally. Make a deal with one of those companies and pack in something like a Call of Duty or something else. Take the loss to build yourself a base.

Or if you HAVE to have your own game packed in, I'd pick Smash Bros before Mario Kart.

Splatoon would be the pack in most likely

Mario kart sells a shit load compared to Splatoon

That's the thing though, if it's an enhanced port then the big cost of developing it has been absored by the WiiU version. Imagine a Nintendo console launch with a pack-in Mario Kart? It would sell incredibly well.

I'm not too sure about this whole potability thing being a huge factor in selling this product.

Only game I could see myself being interested in playing on the go is Mario Kart but to be honest I don't game on the go in general. Splatoon's bulk is onlline. But the ability to play locally is really damn cool. I think this console would obviously be huge in Japan but not too sure about it for the west.

What I do like is off screen play in the house, that is nice. So really being able to play Splatoon off-screen and it potentially being a sequel(based on numerous changes seen in the short trailer) would sell me on the game. I still also feel like it's one of those games that benefits from having a larger fov, playing local-mutliplayer on gamepad made me sick

Smash Bros on the go isn't very interesting to me. Playing on tv with others is the way to go, never played smash on wii u gamepad, never. Even Mario Kart is too small for me to seriously play on the gamepad.

Third party games like CoD and NBA might draw casuals. My brother loved playing CoD off-tv. For some reason it reminds me too much of wii u, I'm going to need some third parties to seriously convince me of this product. That or drastic reduction in production time.

I think Mario Kart as the Pack in would be brilliant for a couple of reasons. It's the perfect showcase for what the system can theoretically do utility wise in addition to being a fantastic videogame.

I already bought like... all the good Nintendo games for Wii U. Is Nintendo gonna hook me up somehow? Or am I fucked, and have to buy them all over again? If so, that is a huge bummer as a full-on Wii U supporter.

I agree with this. If Nintendo launches the switch at $299 with Mario Kart as a pack in, I think it might have a chance to capture the mainstream success that they obviously want it to. If I have to pay $350 for the console and $50 for a game, I'm skipping launch.

And we thus say farewell to the good old "only one SmaBro and Mario Kart per console"...

We can't say that for definite. It's plausible that Smash Switch would be it for Nintendo Switch. I can't say for so sure with Mario Kart and Splatoon yet. I just need to see more before we are being so certain.

You dare forget Takamaru?

Shit, I forget! I must atone my sin.

I was confident about Mario Kart and Smash Bros. transitioning over to the [Nintendo Switch] since E3. It was just extremely logical. I also added Splatoon to that idea of thinking, but additionally I want to posit this.

Splatoon was very successful. However, it was successful under the restraints of an unsuccessful platform and very limited consumer base. Now, Nintendo wants this franchise to stand along their big multiplayer IPs (Smash, Mario Kart). The Nintendo Switch is an opportunity to go for even bigger numbers. Not only would it not make sense to let all the Splatoon content die on the Wii U, but the idea of introducing a title named Splatoon 2 for the first time to an audience, is a marketing disaster. It really makes sense to take those big 3 multiplayer IPs, and build on them, release them as strong updates early in the Nintendo Switch life cycle to a potentially BIG audience.

Meanwhile, the rest of Nintendo's R&D can actually focus on delivering a mix of BIG new entries, and original titles. But it doesn't make sense to let three of their biggest multiplayer games, vanish on the smallest user base ever.

I also have almost similar thought about that but I really hope that they would do their new contents very well.

So do previous Wii U owners of these games need to pay full price again?

I wouldn't have any problem to buy it again if their new contents are worthy enough to pull me to buy.

Easy passes for me, gonna wait for sequels.

What if that's it for those games?

All the Wii U owners will be FURIOUS!

Nope, I wouldn't. :)

Once in a lifetime chance. :P

There is a chance that we could see Twice in a lifetime chance. ;)

You paid $60 for those games...to play those games. You didn't buy a subscription to all those games and any ports forever.

Meanwhile Steam has existed for over a decade, and I'm about to get Skyrim Enhanced for free. I'm just saying, it seems kind of ridiculous to make an early library based on ports and not hook up loyal Wii U fans.

My thinking is that Splatoon is being ported in the sense that they aren't rebuilding it from scratch and it'll have all (if possible) the content from the first game. But there'll be plenty of improvements, enhancements, new features, etc. that it will basically have its own identity.

I think it'll probably have a subtitle or something. "Splatoon: Turf Wars" is what I've been thinking for the longest time. Nintendo will want to be careful with the branding since for many players, this will be their first time getting their feet wet in the Splatoon pool.

Meanwhile, you have to pay to get the PS4 and XBO versions of Skyrim.

So... where are you going with this?

I felt the same with the jump from PS3 to PS4. That's how it is and yeah it's a huge disadvantage for consoles. Hopefully starting this gen there's a solution to backwards compatibility. At least Nintendo seemed to address this in one of their meetings.

At first, the ports do seem kind of dodgy, but you make a good point, if you think about it, the ports don't take away the game you bought. It happens all the time as well, Uncharted 1-3/The Last of Us/Tomb Raider, etc.

That's more of an exception rather than the norm. But they do need new things to offer to Wii U owners.

I would love a Wii U collection (Splatoon, Mario Kart 8, Smash Brothers). It would be hard justifying buying them again, but . . . yeah, I'd do it again.

Man this is a great idea. What if they did a couple different SKUs that included one of the Wii U enhanced ports? Could do pretty well, especially for those that never got a Wii U.

Price would still be a factor though.

I don't think it would cost them very much to do the pack-in itself. However they'd lose a ton of money on potential individual sales of the game. On the flip side of that, having the game as a pack-in would really swing open the doors to DLC - everyone would be a potential customer, and lots of people would be fairly willing to put some money into the game.

I'm trying to understand the sentiment of why expanded ports might make consumers upset. I'm not trying to be critical. I just am hoping someone can give an explanation to help me.

When I think about it, the old versions of the game still work as is and can still be played indefinitely. The only negative thing I can think of that might happen is a game's online community being affected by the release of an updated port if the old community migrates to the new version. However, that's also the case with many sequels, and 2-3 years after a game's original release, I'm not sure how much of a factor that would be in a game's declining online community.

So, I guess I'm looking for the emotional aspect of it. Is it because people bought the game and the system with the assumption that that particular content would remain exclusive, and without that, they wouldn't have felt the need to buy these games and systems in 2014 or 2015? Is it because they want to have the definitive edition of something (I personally feel this drive) and these ports break their expectations of what they thought they had?

I admit I also didn't really understand people being upset when Hyrule Warriors got the Legends port (which I ultimately decided to buy but wasn't upset about existing, even if my ideal was everything being on Wii U for the better graphics) because Hyrule Warriors got everything that was ever promised for it. At least, that's what I felt. So I'm wondering what I'm missing.

I also said before that remasters would probably take the place of the all-new handheld installments.

Instead of developing a handheld Mario Kart 9 and a console Mario Kart 10, they do the remaster of Mario Kart 8 and a Mario Kart 9.

They sell two games like before, with the added bonus of being able to reuse assets and code from the Wii U.

There is about zero chance of Smash 4 Switch not being full price.

Which is why I am hoping for Smash 4 Switch being full price and a DLC with the characters for Smash 4

which has a SLIGHLY bigger chance of happening than Smash 4 Switch not being full price
