Emily Rogers: Splatoon Switch is not a sequel, allegedly. Same for Mario Kart.

I think Nintendo should definitely price the enhanced ports cheaper for everyone actually. It would make the console more appealing for everyone.
Assuming that Mario Kart and Smash come with all the DLC on top of the extra content, full price seems justified. That is a price cut in a sense. The Smash DLC especially is not particularly cheap.

And for those who've never owned those games at all before, what a treat!

They're too stubborn to do it, but I really wish they would. Imagine the entire install base owning one of Nintendo's best online multiplayer games.

Hope they bundle 'Super Splatoon' instead. Consumers will buy Mario Kart regardless of its pack-in. If Splatoon were the Wii Sports equivalent, it would be massive for the IP.

Won't matter for most people since so few owned a Wii U
This is pretty dumb. How do you know how many people will buy the Switch? How many of them owned a WiiU? What's the price of the Switch? Just saying that most people did not own a WiiU does not mean that many more will own a Switch or that many WiiU owners won't.

Yeah, I don't see why people think this is an issue. If this sells how Nintendo hopes, than a large amount of Switch owners will have never played these games anyway, and it allows them to come screaming out the gate with a software lineup that will actually help people get serious use out of the device.

Whether they are enhanced ports with additional content or not, launching a new Nintendo device alongside Zelda, Mario Kart, Smash, Splatoon, and Mario Maker is good for everybody. Mario Kart 8 isn't suddenly no longer a fantastic game just because Switch is out, so why make us wait until halfway through Switch's lifespan to make a new one from scratch when they can just port the previous one and add more to it? Same with Smash.

Customers weren't interested in the Wii U itself, not the games it had. I have lots of family members who love Mario Kart 8 and Mario Maker, but the Wii U itself is unappealing to them. They hate how the Gamepad feels, they think it's too expensive and I've actually heard a lot that people don't like that the Gamepad can't be taken on the go to play the games, so they don't want it. Lots of my friends come over and only want to play Wii U when they're here, but refuse to buy one themselves.

These games are appealing to people, they were just stuck on a piece of hardware no one wants.

EDIT: Not the best analogy, but still, think of Resident Evil 4. That game was initially stuck on the worst selling platform of that generation. That didn't mean people didn't want RE4, they didn't want the Gamecube. When it came to platforms more people liked, the game continued selling like gangbusters.
Lol you can't separate one from the other. Software drives hardware sales. Most people have not been interested in both WiiU software and hardware.
Oops double post.

Hmm, I should probably sell my Wii U copies now. I don't even play the system much anymore. Might just keep the exclusives that probably won't be ported (Bayo 1+2, Star Fox, and Budokai Tenkaichi 3 Wii) .

I started #FE to finish off my Wii U library and was planning on playing more MK and Splatoon but at this point might as well not do that and wait for the Switch versions. Would make playing those older games a fresher experience I'm looking forward to more.

I'm not gonna lie if I can buy Smash 4 and Mario Kart 8 along with Breath of the Wild I'll be buying a switch. Those games with what they're promising would be great.

$20-30 for ports/rereleases. Anything more is a ripoff... Just like most of their Wii U games/remasters.

Why do I get the impression that Nintendo is getting more and more comfortable ripping off their most devoted fans?

I've been pretty interested in the Nintendo software but wasn't interested in the Wii U itself. I'd gladly buy enhanced ports of Splatoon, Mario Kart, Smash (didn't want the 3DS version) etc on the Switch.

Portable Pokken would be cool, too.

A $60 enhanced port of Smash Bros. with every piece of DLC + some new content would be far from a ripoff. And I feel quite confident in saying the market would agree with me.

I think we will see 2 bundles at launch: one with Mario Kart 8 Switch pre-installed and the other with Splatoon Switch pre-installed.

You really think Wii U owners who are buying Switch will be happy with that? If there's a bundle involved, at least one entirely new game will likely be bundled. Breath of the Wild comes to mind.

Especially since the WiiU and 3DS game are still full priced...and still worth it.

All in One GotY Smash Bros Edition including all the DLC characters and maybe 1-2 new one would be easy worth full price.

I bought a Wii U expecting to play BotW on it so I am going to be annoyed either way.

not if you already own the game.

not if you already own the game.

I own Smash on WiiU and will buy Smash on Switch - its an essential for a Nintendo system. Especially with all the local coop possibilities on Switch.

I mean if you already own a older version of the game and the Switch version isnt worth the money for you...dont buy it.

What's the difference apart from one being more honest? Surely a rushed Mario Kart sequel would just be built on top of the MK8 engine so would feel pretty much identical to it.

I don't know why people who missed out on MK8 are happy to get that rather than a brand new MK9. I highly doubt a MK9 would be worse seeing as this is a series that has pretty much improved with every version.

The problem is, Mario Kart has been a one game per gen series, so the idea of not getting a proper new experience doesn't sit well with me as a big Mario Kart fan.

What's the difference between a rushed sequel built on top of MK8 and rerelease MK8 with more content?

I have no doubt there will be another full blown MK on the system, there's never been two just as there's never been a rerelease.

MK Wii did not play close to as well as MK8 and worse than DD.

My big concern is how Nintendo is going to handle the arena map that appears on the Wii U gamepad.

Hold a button to overlay the map on the screen, then press a hotkey to select who you warp too. This really isn't rocket science.

Edit: for example, assuming the rest of the controls remain the same as the original; you could hold down L for the map and use the face buttons as hot keys or you could use A or B for the map and use the dpad as hot keys.

Smash/Mario Kart/Splatoon/Mario Maker are essentials and should be on every Nintendo device ever. That said, a bundle with Zelda sounds more enticing since it's completely new.

So what about the loyal fans that bought a Wii U? Isnt that very rude for them?

I don't think so, Nintendo prices always stay at a premium rate and you don't want to confuse consumers. Most don't know Mario Kart 8 or Splatoon exist, there's no reason to brand them as an expansion and put a budget price on it, Mario Kart 8.5 would be a bad name for instance, Mario Kart 8: Subtitle might be a little better.

But why do you need an MK9? The hardware doesn't necessarily allow for a 4K HDR ground up game. Why not just build on the foundation of MK8 and Smash, add more content and features, and keep the game fresh. Then you can use the resources to work on new big games for this generation.
Mario Kart Wii was clearly built on top of Double Dash's (even using the same character models) but didn't feel like a retread. I don't mind returning tracks, this is a series known for it since DS, but having three starred every cup on every CC in MK8 I'd like to see some new challenges.

I would't mind seeing MK9 being built using the MK8 engine, I like how it controls, but I do feel we'd need to see at least the standard 8 new cups (not necessarily 32 new tracks because retro stages, though seeing some old tracks given the MK8 treatment would be nice). With DLC there's always the option to provide the missing MK8 tracks for those who want them.

I still miss Mario Maker. Hopefully it hits NS so I can play it.

For the other three titles, I will definitely double dip Splatoon. I invested many hours on it and it is still fun to play. Regarding Smash and Mario Kart, I will wait and see if the extra content are attractive to me.

Splatoon is so fun. I've had more fun with Splatoon than I ever had with Smash Bros.

What if Nintendo bundled a best of Wii U cart with say 60gb storage, mk8, Splatoon and Mario maker with the Switch?

Might be plausible.

A 16GB card is more than enough for all those, but they won't do that when they can easily sell these games for at least 39$ each and have a lot of people buying them.

This is not the least bit surprising. This is what Iwata meant when he said NX would "absorb the Wii U architecture". He wasn't talking about CPU architecture; he was talking about software architecture. I.e. NX's APIs/dev tools will be a superset of Wii U's.

This should make for very easy porting from Wii U->NX. I expect nearly every major Wii U title to get ported at some point.

Makes a lot of sense since games like Smash and MK got their "definitive" versions on Wii U and received a plethora of content.

For that matter, I could see Nintendo going with a Blizzard-like approach with games like MK and Smash. Instead of numbered, iterative releases, they will just keep releasing content for the existing version.

Two item slots doesn't seem like a bit change but it would totally throw off the balance of the game. I don't see them making a change like that just for a port. Either it's a new game using the mk8 engine or is just currently using mk8 assets.

Mario Kart would mean multiplayer right out of the box though. Splatoon can't be played with a single joy-con, as far as I can tell.

I'm betting they just showed off a retro course since it was the furthest a along.

Software drives hardware sales if the hardware itself is compelling. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there that would love to play something like Splatoon but not for the Wii U

I think the biggest issue for me is save data. Yes you can't play the old games on the new system but what about save data?

I've logged nearly 300 hours in Splatoon, probably around 50-100 in Smash and Mario Kart. While Kart nesecarrily isn't something I'm hugely worried about, I invested a lot of time unlocking (and buying) upgrades for Smash. Am I going to be able to keep those in the port which presumably would have the same stuff offered for free? A discount or other special unlock for spending like $30 or more on the dlc? And for Splatoon I'm nearly lv 50 and have unlocked basically all the clothing available. Are those going to be erased in the port and I'll have to start all over?

A full sequel I could understand not porting save files but if it is just a port there shouldn't be a need for complete nuking of what players have worked hard at.

Give me a Mario Maker port too, and why not SM3DW. I skipped the U, so there's a bunch of games I'd happily take enhanced ports of!

Agreed with this. That DLC isn't cheap; I'm glad I didn't buy any of Wii U once we heard the rumors of the port.

Portable Pokken would be fucking everything. It's a game that I feel would really benefit from that public eye, too.

This is something I've been questioning ever since the Smash NX rumors first popping up, so I'm hoping Nintendo will throw us a bone here.

You know, why we're on the subject of the Mario Maker port, something I find interesting is that there were a handful of unused Costume Mario costumes that still haven't been re-implemented in a future update.

I wonder if they were held back for the Switch port.

Seems highly unlikely with the 3DS port happening 3 months before, or they are going to give it for free for those who already bought it, kinda like a BC.

Personally I know I'm 100% getting the Switch with Splatoon.
I'm just hoping that they are serious about the eSports bit in the end much like Blizzard/Valve etc a game like Splatoon with 10-20 million players instead of 4-5 it's going to be massively different. Simply put the community, the requirements of the community and the overall I think very open relationship Splatoon devs have had with both the Japanese and WW Splatoon community thus far gives me hope.

Basically an Enhanced Port of Splatoon needs the following:

First and foremost Nintendo needs to treat it like a Platform for as long as the Switch is out. Everything that they add-on to the multiplayer and community features is free to people who have bought the game and they continually add more modes, weapons, clothes, matchmaking options, spectating options, tournament options and so forth.

Than simply introduce a lot of Single Player paid DLC/Expansions with more and more variation in terms of Platforming, AI of enemies, number of enemies, battle scenarios(limiting you to use only a sub weapon), grander variation of enemy and obstacle types - simply put the Wii U SP is very bare-bones. I think there is a lot of advanced techniques that you cannot learn at all without going off script in Splatoon - so a modifiable hub for practicing, with the capability to select number and type of enemies.

Release spin off or connected to the platform mini games:

- Downloadable games that allows you to design squid gear. Integrate this with the Nintendo account system, allow people to use what they designed in Splatoon for the SP. Have contest about "freshest" gear within the Splatoon community(for each region or WW) and the winning gear becomes something that you can buy in game.
- Special modes for events - I'm thinking something like - when new game is released by Nintendo they can release a downloadable mode that is themed on the new game. Or something boring like holiday themed modes(Squidmas.... sign)
- PC/Mobile apps to raise awareness of the game - designing gear for Splatoon should be something that is very simple so even people not interested in a shooter might be able to engage with the franchise. Eventually they might decide to buy a Switch just because the gear they designed is now in the actual game. This type of marketing is hopefully what Nintendo is thinking about for the future - very direct and fun.

I'm expecting Splatoon to be bundled for a long time in Japan with the Switch, interested to learn about the improvements on the port. I just hope that they treat this as a platform because it has huge potential.

I think continuously providing events, new content and different ways for people to enjoy the game is the way to go. Nintendo should do this with all their major franchises. Just get people to buy the Switch and your major games and that way you compete less with 3rd party devs since it's a given someone buying Switch is going to get Splatoon/MKS/SSB/Zelda. It just makes a lot of sense to use the major frenchise as a temptation for the platform, while actually develop a lot of other smaller projects both the platform and mobile/pc. Gaming has been redefined and not having a major part of Nintendo specifically thiking about how to get free advertisement through aps like PokemonGO, MarioRunner, SplatDesign, ZeldaBuilder etc is just about the stupidest thing they could do.
I mean just imagine - you build your own shrines in Zelda, share them with your friends, vote! - boom your shrine is in the Switch/Wii U version of BoTW Zelda as free downloadable content.
I hope this is what Nintendo is thinking and how they will create an environment where they create less games overall but the games they do create have tons of side games utilizing different devices to bring people into the eco system.
Obviously they are investing in hardware, so I'm expecting by 2018 them to be released a side device you could bring along for additional computing power. Right now I think they are not planning on releasing the device since it's best to just bring the cost down and get the maximum number of people to adopt the new system and buy at least 5-10 games on it.

Hopefully Kimishima-san is thinking the same

For the other three titles, I will definitely double dip Splatoon. I invested many hours on it and it is still fun to play. Regarding Smash and Mario Kart, I will wait and see if the extra content are attractive to me.

I can play those games whenever and I always have a good time. They are special.

Mario Maker needs to live forever. And for me all it needs is better curation tools and new level editor tools. And DLC. Like Christmas DLC, Halloween DLC and so on. Events would be cool too.

Mario Kart 8 is the perfect Mario Kart for me. The graphics and soundtrack are top notch, all we need is a better battle mode and maybe an eSports balancing mode.

Splatoon needs some eSports tools as well, for spectating and strategizing. New courses, new weapons etc. Other than that it's perfect.

Smash is Smash. The community loves it. Why go through all the trouble of developing a whole new Smash again. It's right there. More characters, done.

Lol you can't separate one from the other. Software drives hardware sales. Most people have not been interested in both WiiU software and hardware.
Oops double post.

You most certainly can. It's not that hard to do so, you see that even on this board among the most hardcore gaming enthusiasts. There are people here very interested in Halo, or Gears of War, but they don't want to buy an Xbox. Or they are very interested in Uncharted but they don't want a PlayStation 4. They don't see a value in the device, but they do see a value in the game.

Tomb Raider was exclusive to Xbox One for a year, lots of people saw value in the game but not the hardware it was on, but bought the game when it became available on hardware they owned.

Again, Resident Evil 4, that is considered one of the best games of all time but based on the backwards logic that no interest in hardware = no interest in its software then that would mean nobody was interested in Resident Evil 4.

This isn't rocket science. You can even see this within Nintendo's ecosystem where the 3DS and its software sold well despite the Wii U flopping, because people are interested in Nintendo software, and they are interested in Nintendo hardware, they just weren't interested in the Wii U itself.

It's not a ripoff. It's the same as someone releasing a Complete edition of a game a year later for 60 dollars with all of the dlc. That's not considered a ripoff in my eyes.

Ehhh, I'm happy with my Wii U versions of these games.

I may get the Switch versions later on when Nintendo releases their "Greatest Hits" line of those games for the Switch.

Port, remix, I don't care what it is but I do hope there's discounts for those of us who owned the games on Wii U. Digital or Retail.

Surely my 800 hours of Splatoon in the Activity Log would be enough to tell them I didn't just pop a friend's disc in to get a rebate. :|

If they are sequels then take my $60, of course.
