Emily Rogers: Splatoon Switch is not a sequel, allegedly. Same for Mario Kart.

I'll be all over enhanced ports of these games. With how Wii U sold, I don't blame Nintendo for porting over whatever they can. There is some solid software on Wii U that deserves to live on beyond the lifespan of that system.

I mean parading remasters front and center and making a big deal of them and taking spotlights in launch lineups. That was never as significant as this gen, where remasters make up an arguably large portion of the system's libraries.

You mean like a fullpriced Wind Waker port that had to be promoted as a major holiday title?

I thought that would have been the case, is not like we can expect a douzen of completely new games from Nintendo at launch...i hope at least that these enhanced versions will be available at launch with hopefully at least on big new title, being it Zelda BOTW or the new Mario 3d

Even as someone who already bought all these games, I'm okay with this. They should build on what they have instead of starting from scratch again. Just add more content to Mario Kart, Splatoon, and Smash Bros., include all the DLC on the disc, improve the presentation a little bit and that's it. This allows them to get the games out as soon as possible, which should be a top priority.

Makes perfect sense. All of those work well as "games as services." Just do enhanced ports and then sell some DLC over the next couple of years until full sequels are ready.

If the Switch sells to more than Nintendo diehards (i.e. Wii U owners) those games could broaden the appeal as well since they're great games many people missed out on. It also helps those still actively play them make the switch as they can sell their Wii Us to help fund buying the switch and the ports.

If what I saw in that Splatoon clip is an enhanced port or remaster, then apparently I have no idea what a port is. The character models are different, animate differently, and the entire team introduction is new. The weapons may fall into prior classes but those models are different and new. The map is new, or at least has undergone significant changes on the level of Urchin Underpass' rebuild from the first game. Pants are added, which will change the entire way the current gear-ability system is balanced. The presence of new hairstyles may make other headgear more of an optional thing. No gamepad means no constant map, and means the super-jump mechanic will need to be significantly changed. That's not minor.

If this isn't being called a sequel, then OK, but it sure as hell isn't just a port, enhanced or otherwise. At the very least it appears to be a total rebuild of the original game's concept. Keep in mind how much the development team added to the game in the wake of its initial E3 reveal. A lot was added in less than a year and way more beyond that. The bulk of the team has already had a good amount of time to potentially work on this, and we don't even know whether it's actually a launch title. By next May or June...

this. I mean the game is clearly based heavily on Splatoons engine. And there hasn't been that much development time between the two games. I would say that this is a sequel, unless there are no new special or sub weapons, or the campaign is copy pasted from the original game. Even without these things it is at very least a leifthrasir-like remix.

I get Splatoon and Smash being remastered, but the Mario Kart they showed in the trailer was clearly different. It had 2 item slots. That's a big gameplay change. I guess maybe it could be an extra mode.
2 items slots, allowing "switching" perhaps? Mario Kart 8S? Mario Kart 8 Switch?

Enhanced port with added features.

Double dip here

In an era where ports are happening everyday, i don't mind buying it again if i get more benefits, plus, i can play it on the go, so i'm in

Edit: now gimme hyrule warrios with all dlc included since i don't have it and i'm in

Good to have some titles for your new game system on the first day. Not just Nintendo Land and Zombi U. Plus Mario Kart 8, Splatoon and fully-fledged Smash Bros on the go? YES PLEASE.

Here I thought there would be an amazing launch line up because they have their handheld and console teams working on this...

I'm not going to buy this system if Wii U ports + DLC is all we get of the likes of Mario Kart and Smash this gen.

Lapse Gamer: Hey so what's coming out for the Nintendo Switch?

GAFD00d: [Zelda: Breath of Wild and whatever new games Nintendo announces]... and Mario Kart 8R, Splatoon R, Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Lapse Nintendo Gamer: Wow. That's pretty cool.

GAFD00d; No you shouldn't be excited because they are all technically remasters of the Wii U editions but with additional stages and characters. Oh and updated mechanics and features. Soo disappointing.. old Wii U games..

Lapse Gamer: What's a Wii U?

The great thing about Mario Kart 8 is that you probably already have a bunch of controllers lying around that work with the multiplayer. Can't see Switch supporting said controllers.

If a customer didn't care about the Wii U offering these games, I can't imagine why they would suddenly be interested in the Switch offering these games.

Yeah, I don't see why people think this is an issue. If this sells how Nintendo hopes, than a large amount of Switch owners will have never played these games anyway, and it allows them to come screaming out the gate with a software lineup that will actually help people get serious use out of the device.

Whether they are enhanced ports with additional content or not, launching a new Nintendo device alongside Zelda, Mario Kart, Smash, Splatoon, and Mario Maker is good for everybody. Mario Kart 8 isn't suddenly no longer a fantastic game just because Switch is out, so why make us wait until halfway through Switch's lifespan to make a new one from scratch when they can just port the previous one and add more to it? Same with Smash.

If a customer didn't care about the Wii U offering these games, I can't imagine why they would suddenly be interested in the Switch offering these games.

Customers weren't interested in the Wii U itself, not the games it had. I have lots of family members who love Mario Kart 8 and Mario Maker, but the Wii U itself is unappealing to them. They hate how the Gamepad feels, they think it's too expensive and I've actually heard a lot that people don't like that the Gamepad can't be taken on the go to play the games, so they don't want it. Lots of my friends come over and only want to play Wii U when they're here, but refuse to buy one themselves.

These games are appealing to people, they were just stuck on a piece of hardware no one wants.

EDIT: Not the best analogy, but still, think of Resident Evil 4. That game was initially stuck on the worst selling platform of that generation. That didn't mean people didn't want RE4, they didn't want the Gamecube. When it came to platforms more people liked, the game continued selling like gangbusters.

Map it to the - button, most first party Wii U games used that button to switch to the second screen anyway, and most shooters have a detailed scoreboard when you press the same button also? What's different from that compared to moving your head down to see what's going on the gamepad, they both block your normal peripheral view anyway?

As for jumping... I got nothing.

I like the sound of that.

Of course they wont have like 5-6 new games of their biggest IPs ready at launch - lets be honest BotW alone shits on the complete WiiU and 3DS launchlineups.

Getting established evergreens like Mario Kart and Splatoon early as possible in the plattform is the right decision - this system is supposed to replace WiiU asap.

Mario and Zelda will be new, everything else will be Wii U ports.

Which is fine, hopefully they port DKTF so more people can play it.

Majority of you didn't buy a WiiU so what's the problem here? These games are quality and deserve to be given a better chance at selling. These games should be new to most of you .

Well they haven't even technically announced any games. We saw ports and an obvious work in progress of Mario. Chill and wait till January.

Mario Kart and Splatoon will get their sequels in due time. It sold well considering the toaster it was released.

The map on which they were playing was the same. The user interface, too. It just looked like normal Splatoon would do.

I never played on that map.
I guess you're not even talking about minor change given the use of "same".
There's no ui either in that footage.

For Mario kart 8 and Splatoon? Hell yes!

Ive put hundreds of hours in MK8, alone and with friends when drinking before hitting the town. Its not only nearly the best MK ever (first place goes to double dash) but also one of the best couch multiplayer games ever. Having that on my new console for the rest of its lifespan while the Wii U has been boxed up with me being to lazy to take it out of the box again is fantastic, especially if more courses are added. MK8 is almost like a best off Mario Kart with an insane amount of courses already if you count the fantastic dlc.

I have Splatoon but only did the single player and a few hours of the multiplayer, didnt had the time to do more and I dont want to jump in the wiiu version anymore. A Switch version would give me the chance to really put some time in it and with a lot of people who try it for the first time as well so im not the only inexperienced noob in the multiplayer.

Im not big on smash so I dunno about that but I can see how fans would eat it up.

Man if its just to sweeten the launch window of the Switch while nintendo work on new games for end 2017 and 2018 its all good. Hell zelda will be enough to scratch that new game itch with how big its looking

I can't help but feel that's gonna happen all over again with the Switch though. Customers want to play Nintendo's software but only a fraction are willing to shell out $300+ to do so. They'll just stick to the platforms they already own.

I hope they are not ports... If they are, then I want a discount on buying the new version. I don't even mind ports since they are getting new content anyways, but expecting people who bought Splat and Mario Kart to pay $60 for each again... It is really dumb.

Personally, I'm not happy about this.

If Switch gets enhanced ports of all of the Wii U's best games, it makes me question why I bought them on Wii U in the first place.

It's great for everyone that skipped the Wii U, but unless they add a significant amount of new content, it's giving the finger to Nintendo's best customers and biggest fans. It's risking the diehards in favor of bringing in new blood.

Since it's Nintendo, they can probably get away with it, but I still think it's a risk. As a Wii U owner, and an owner of these games, it significantly reduces my desire for a Switch, at least until some actual new games come out.

Even just it being a portable Wii U for launch is awesome for me. Sold games rumored to be ported so will be so happy to play the special version.
And Splatoon at work. Omg so good !

Mario Kart and Splatoon will get their sequels in due time. It sold well considering the toaster it was released.

Do you really need sequels to Mario Kart and Smash if they add the original game + dlc + new characters/stages for this final mix. I think you are good. Let them release the older games via VC for added kicks.

Splatoon is a new IP, so the original game + and a later sequel make sense.

Why not Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze too then?

They're probably more like to port MP games where they can sell DLC more easily I'd guess.

Plus more potential for rebuying there since many are still playing those online games, where as single player games are much more of "beat it and never touch it again" type games for most gamers.

I never played on that map.
I guess you're not even talking about minor change given the use of "same".
There's no ui either in that footage.

I'm sure it's the same map as the first map ever shown in Splatoon. I unfortunately don't know the english names of the maps so I can't give a clear answer, but I'm like 100% sure it's an already existing map.

Fine for people who didn't buy Wii U or Nintendo superfans. I own and enjoy my Wii U. Mario Kart and Splatoon are some of my favorite games this gen. Might get BoTW on Wii U.

But I'll probably get the Switch in a holiday 2018 bundle or something, hopefully with a brand new exclusive game.

I'll most likely buy Switch when the new 3D Mario releases.

I can't help but feel that's gonna happen all over again with the Switch though. Customers want to play Nintendo's software but only a fraction are willing to shell out $300+ to do so. They'll just stick to the platforms they already own.

Nintendo just needs to make that fraction larger and they'll be just fine.

They'd go mobile-only before bothering with other console platform holders and Steam getting a cut of expensive 3D games. You know it, I know it.

They may as well port games to it, as many as they can. This is basically an alternate reality Wii U. If there's one thing Nintendo needs, it's software.

Get as many ports as possible to it, while working on original content.

Yes probably, do any examples of the opposite exist? This seems like an absurd request.

Their games rarely get discounted. I paid $60 for splatoon, I would have to pay another $60 to get the updated version. That's a lot of money so I probably won't be buying it again

I feel like these ports are pretty justifiable both from Nintendo's perspective and a gamer's perspective. Splatoon, Kart, Maker, and Smash are all multiplayer or online focused games and getting early ports means that you're getting to continue to play them on updated hardware (presumably for the life of that new hardware). It would be different if these were single player games like 3D World, Yarn Yoshi, or Star Fox. You get Smash, Splatoon, and Kart set right away instead of having to go back to the Wii U until they get sequels.

We've already seen new content in Splatoon and Kart, so it's not like they're slapping on one new level and calling it a day. As people have said, how cool would it be for Ice Climbers to return to Smash? Or increased 8 player brawls?Presumably it'd come with all the DLC too (as would Kart).

I'm sure it's the same map as the first map ever shown in Splatoon. I unfortunately don't know the english names of the maps so I can't give a clear answer, but I'm like 100% sure it's an already existing map.

I'm now 100% sure you're confused.
Check splatoon reveal trailer.

We dont even know whats coming at launch, these are just some of the games

I would much rather have a bunch of remasters coming through out the year along with new games. Then just 2 new launch games and then nothing for months
