Emily Rogers: Splatoon Switch is not a sequel, allegedly. Same for Mario Kart.

Yeah at some point, it feels like they don't need sequels. Nintendo is hitting a limit on graphics where they don't care to make it much better.

They can just do DLCs like you said, or make it F2P.

Splatoon probably deserves a sequel, but after that, it doesn't really.
 
RE: remakes vs. enhanced ports:

Way I use each term depends on how much I see the "bones" of the original. Like I generally think of SM64DS as an enhanced port because I strongly suspect they started by porting over the original SM64 and modifying it from there. Whereas something like REmake is much more of a, well, remake in my eyes, because aside from sharing some camera angles, it's clear pretty much everything was overhauled from the ground up.

Through this lens, for all its added content, Splatoon still seems very much like an enhanced port, even if certain elements have been added or retooled. It still seems to very much share the "bones" of the WiiU original.

With how much buzz there is around the Switch, I don't think that's gonna be the case. I think this thing will be at least as healthy as the 3DS. People didn't mind buying a 3DS because it was clear what it was and the functionality was valuable to them.

I think this is going to appeal to core gamers more simply because of the hybrid nature that gives them a normal controller and normal home console environment to play the Nintendo games without weird gimmicks, and the portable nature (us diehards really love that Vita). I also think it's going to appeal to families in the sense that it is portable and focused on party/multiplayer gameplay even on the go.

For multi-children families you don't need to buy a Switch for each kid and multiple copies of a game, you buy the one $300(?) unit and some controllers, and any games you buy can come on the go and be multiplayer off the one device. This isn't a handheld, so it's not marketed or interpreted as a personal device. This is a family device, and that makes the use more clear and the price easier to swallow.

The marketing is clear on what Switch is, and while it won't appeal to everyone it's generating significant buzz right off the bat and I think it presents itself as a product with clear use and value.
 
Pretty obvious and my main issue about nx
I have a wiiu so they need new games or great account promotion to hook me in the first year
 
I don't know why you wouldn't double dip for Mario Kart and Splatoon, just to be able to play them on the go. Smash seems logical too as it covers their multiplayer and esports bases without having to rebuild those games from the ground up.

Now see, that wasn't a "port". That was definitely a "remaster". They did a ton of re-texturing work and added in so many convenience features as to make the game actually playable.

I would -still- pay full price for that.

It's a mix of:

-They haven't shown anything else besides a new Mario. The reveal showed the consoles mostly playing ports.

-On GAF it's easier to find WiiU owners than in other places. Lots of WiiU owners won't be blown away by the chance to buy all their games again

As a Wii U owner as well, I get what you are saying. That said, I can't imagine that they won't have brand new experiences ready for the Launch of Switch.

Also, these games should have additional content like a real battle mode, new characters, new tracks, and all previous DLC for Mario Kart 8.

As long as their are some new experiences and added content to these ports, I think it's a good idea as it does increase the value to potential Switch buyers with those titles in the library. I can't imagine it's a 1:1 port and that's all they plan on having at launch.
 
Man, it would be such an incredible bummer if the Switch launched with enhanced ports and "1.5"s for the big franchises instead of full-fledged sequels.

But they didn't add significant content, nor maintain an active multiplayer mode (servers cost money). You replayed the same game.

Because as one of the people who bought a Wii U, I already own these games and probably won't rebuy anything but MK8. If they don't pair this with new games then the first year of the Switch is still a drought for me.
 
So there's no reason for me to buy this at launch. I can get Zelda on my Wii U and I already own Mario Kart 8 & Smash.
 
I'm so confused. So now if you count Bethesda saying Skyrim isn't a real game for Switch right now, a bulk of their announced games are simply Wii U ports at the moment. Given Nintendo's history with third parties, I don't like how Nintendo's own games for the Switch seem to also be enhanced ports. I obviously know they've got plenty of originals, but they need to stick the landing here and be aggressive marketing this thing. So show more of them. I've got a Wii U, Nintendo. And those games weren't enough to get people to buy it. Show me why I should buy Switch.

Just a bizarre way to show the system so far. Not confidence building to say the least.

Eventually yeah. A new splatoon game in two years, a new kart game in 3 years, a new smash in 5 years.
 
Considering the Wii U base size, this is a smart move. A lot of adopters likely never played these titles and they may as well play the definitive versions of them.
 
This is what I expected. No reason to make sequels to perfectly fine games no one played on the Wii U when you can just remaster them.

That campaign in splatoon was fun enough that I'd like to see it steadily iterated upon for a while, honestly.

i also feel like the kinds of changes I want to see made to mario kart aren't gonna happen via an expansion pack-ish remaster. Something like fixing up battle mode or reviving mission mode.

i also feel that smash has plenty of room to draw from the pile of bizarre features it's had over the generations and release a different core experience. "iterate upon subspace and/or adventure mode" and "turn smash tour into something better" both seem like chances to make radically better games that I can't see developing in a remaster.

Which is fine as long as Nintendo plans to release new games for Kart, Smash, and Splatoon for the system rather than the enhanced ports being their evergreen titles. Mario being the only original game shown (and the reveal possibly being delayed just for it) is concerning to me on what the first year is going to be like.

Sure they're ports, but they're going to have enough new content to justify being Switch launch titles. All three of these are titles that have expanded themselves in the past through DLC, so I have no doubt we'll see pretty decent additions to all three since that would have been easy to do as well.
 
Why can't they just develop a powerhouse to go to bat against Microsoft/Sony. A comparable system with a compelling online experience would literally set the world on fire and developers would love it.

I hate to say it about my beloved Nintendo, but they need to go broke and just become a developer.

I always crack up at how Nintendo devs created the Wii's online services without ever being on the PSN or Xbox live to have a clue what people like.
 
Even if Splatoon Switch isn't a true sequel, given how service based the original one was an NS version would mean at least another year of support which is... about as good as a sequel, right?

Sure, but a significantly better version of it. A lot of the Zelda re-releases are like that.

"Port", to me, especially "enhanced port", implies a quick and easy cash-grab like the Bioshock Collection or Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition. That doesn't look like what's going to happen with Splatoon, at least.
 
Makes complete sense for Mario Kart and Smash, but Splatoon is a weird one. A sequel makes more sense here. Since Switch isn't extremely more powerful than Wii U it makes sense they're using the same engines for titles like MK and Smash which look amazing already. Splatoon seems barren in comparison visually

Nintendo hasn't announced any game, other than Zelda have they? Let's wait till they actually announce titles before assuming that all they have are Wii U ports.

Personally, I disliked the wii u so much I stopped buying games for it in the hope they would port all the 1st party games to Switch. So I do hope they bring a lot of these titles over so I may consider purchasing them. (If the switch IQ, OS and overall snappiness of the product is up to my standards)

I've played this game for a year, across a thousand hours, and this 100% isn't a map in Splatoon. Also, daku has more clout than you on this matter. idk why you are arguing with someone who has likely played hundreds of hours of the game.
 
I dont carefor double dip, but these ports are a necessity and a good thing overall, specially for non Wii U owners.

I just wish they were not so conservative with the ports

At least with Bioshock though it was 3 games in one. It was also completely free on PC.

This is sort of how I feel. I understand it, but at the same time I hope they add enough content to make it worth rebuying.

Mario Kart will feel like a new game if they give us some damn Battle mode maps.

You don't put them all out at launch. Probably Mario Kart 8.5 (since its the oldest). Maybe Smash too. Then you accompany it with Zelda and whatever quirky original first-party game Nintendo has in mind. (Wii Sports, Steel Diver, etc).

Splatoon as the Summer game. 3D Mario as the star of you first Holiday line-up.
 
Ports are fine, if you don't like them don't buy them, but there are people who might have not played these games before. I remember a vocal minority of Ninty fans who decried ports on other consoles but now you're going to learn it's a good thing.
 
Honestly not ashamed in double dipping for Smash and Mario Kart. Especially because it looks like at least Mario Kart 8 will be getting a bit of new content.

Developers won't love it just because it's powerful. If the Nintendo audience doesn't buy their games they could care less.
