Emily Rogers: Splatoon Switch is not a sequel, allegedly. Same for Mario Kart.

Great news. It would have been very disappointing if the shown Splatoon and Mario Kart footages were sequels, because they definitely didn't look/feel that way. But I do love the idea of an enhanced port of them!

I'm okay with this. If a few remasters insure that the launch day / window is packed that's great. This is also a good idea considering many people skipped the Wii U.

Seriously, they have been doing this for decades. They mastered the remaster/rerelease before Sony or MS ever made a single console game.

Yep. And this game was highly praised at release - despite the fact that it was the SECOND enhanced port of SMB.

I actually wanted more DLC for MK8, so I guess I should be happy. We could get MK9 in 3 years, along with the Switch Micro that is sized like a proper handheld :P

I didn't play much of Splatoon at all even though I liked it. Just came out at the wrong time for me so this is great news. And seeing as how Mario Kart 8 is one of the best games released this generation, sign me up for an up port.

Having a selection of portable, enhanced versions of some of the best games from their system few people bought, on launch sounds great to me. As a disappointed Wii U owner who loves portability I'd be all over Smash 4 and Splaroon at the very least.

I do feel bad for people expecting a loyalty discount or save export, though. This is Nintendo.

Tomb Raider and The Last of Us got enhanced ports literally a year later and people bought them. Weren't they full-price, too?

Personally, I think those people are idiots if they paid full price. The Last of Us could have been had for $12 down the road though and it ran at 1080p/60 fps which was a SIGNIFICANT increase in quality. I just can't imagine the Switch versions looking better or performing better than they already do on the Wii U.

No brainer on a logistical and strategic level. They are not going to pump out 2 new AAA level games along with Mario, zelda, and new IP in the launch window, and adding two surefire hits many people haven't been exposed to will shore up any software weaknesses. We also know this direction from the ER rumours anyways, with them having trouble porting over Super Mario Maker

Seems pretty intuitive. Hopefully there are a few new stages in Kart, and at least one newcomer in Smash. Ice Climbers and Chorus Kids? Did we ever find evidence of characters that almost made it into Smash 4?

I suppose "enhanced port" for Smash 4 could mean no new characters and rather just all the different modes.

I'm curious how many people will be early Switch adopters but never owned a Wii U. I feel like the most likely early adopters and Wii U owners probably have a lot of overlap. That said, as long as they add content to these titles and mix in new titles, I think this is fine.

Most remasters don't come out at full price. Skyrim is rare in that they are charging 60 for it.

That is not what is being discussed. The person I responded to asked if previous Wii U owners will get a lower cost, you're talking a lower price point in general.

Just saying that it makes very little sense, to retire a main game feature only to revive it exclusively for the enhanced port.

And that's why it's a sequel, and not an enhanced port.

I hope for the love of god the Joy-cons or Pro contorller have gyro, Splatoon won't be the same without it.

I'd like to think that the rather flat shape of the system and the joycon handle unit are because it has gyros, yeah.

Personally, I think those people are idiots if they paid full price.

That is, well, what they were being sold for, so.

Again, why add new stuff to MK8 and Splatoon but not for Smash? Characters are what get people excited for Smash, and Sakurai knows that. Nobody will care if it's just only new modes or whatever.

I imagine Switch will get a lot of enhanced ports. It just makes sense considering the limited sales potential on Wii U for a lot of these quality titles.

I'm a little worried about cost. I hope there's solid incentive to upgrade for those of us who already jumped in on Wii U versions. That said, as NS is a "clean break" of sorts, I'm not expecting much.

I'd want 4 player Mario Kart to be 60fps, and just to have 4 player split screen in Splatoon in the first place.

(And yeah not much they can do with Smash for increased performance, but I'd buy if it included all the DLC cause I never picked any of that up)

I get Splatoon and Smash being remastered, but the Mario Kart they showed in the trailer was clearly different. It had 2 item slots. That's a big gameplay change. I guess maybe it could be an extra mode.

Though with the Skyrim controversy, maybe that Mario Kart footage means absolutely nothing.

The Splatoon footage had the characters with an extra equipment slot and a bunch of pretty significant visual upgrades.

Huh, I didn't notice that, I thought it was just new hairstyles. That's an even more significant change. I don't know anymore /shrug.

Next up in obvious news and safe quesses, Emily Rogers will tell GAF that there will be a Splatoon sequel and Mario Kart 9 at some point.

Just reheat the Wii U games in the microwave and you've got yourself a launch lineup!

Again, this was the PS4's launch lineup. Literally everyone bought it anyway.

I'm kinda raising my eyebrow at the Splatoon thing.

When I first saw it in the video, my first thought was "is this a port, or a sequel," because it was short snippets of footage, because the first thing I noticed was hairstyles which seemed like a purely cosmetic change, and because of the existing Emily Rogers rumors, but then I started leaning more and more toward sequel.

The assets are different, the design of the spawn pad is different, the design of the basic core weapons (the Shooter, Roller, and Charger) have been changed, if pants aren't just cosmetic then they'll have perks like all of the other clothing items which would require rebalancing, there's new clothing items, the fact that just the main three weapons were shown as if they're still redesigning every one, the one map shown appears to be either new or an overhauled version of an existing map that's changed enough to cause debate because the geometry, basic layout have been significantly altered and the textures are all different, the team intro animation (if not made up specially for the video) is new with a different camera angle with new poses and animations for the Inklings, and even with a low res angled appearance the lighting and character model geometry seems to be improved.

It might be technically a enhanced rerelease but it would be a serious update if it is.

how do you distinguish from a port and a sequel or enhanced port. If there's new stages and mechanics is it a port? The little footage that they showed had a map that I don't recall seeing in the original version of Splatoon

New hair, animations pants. As EmCee poited out above

I'm cool with this especially since I never got smash U(3ds version satisfied me).

Add enough extra junk and I'm happy.

It's probably a better idea to get these easy quick release enhanced ports out within a few months of launch day. I mean imagine yourself as one of those average buyers who skipped out on the Wii U. This new Nintendo console with a cool new concept is out and within the first few months you've already got an brand new Zelda, along with a Mario Kart, Smash Bros, and new IP (Splatoon) you haven't played before.

And then you find out a new Mario Kart and Smash and Splatoon are in the works for either the rest of the year or sometime in 2018.

I didn't get MK8 so i welcome either an enhanced port or MK9 all the same.

Doubtful i'll buy a 3rd copy of smash tho, lol.

Maybe for Splatoon, but the Smash and Mario Kart developers can move on after delivering DX/1,5 editions of those games to deliver different products.

I never bought any of the smash DLC, so if it gets ported as the definitive edition Im down.

In that case, even if they only add a couple character to the re-release, you will get to experience basically an entirely new game's worth of characters (plus a ton of new stages).

I imagine a lot of people's situations will be like that. Where maybe they just had Mewtwo or nothing and now the remaster they'll have 7 new characters to mess around with (even if they were a few years old at the time).
