Emily Rogers: Why you should be excited about NX’s software output

I'll believe it when i see it. I'm also interested in what they will do when this generation ends for Sony and Microsoft in 2 or 3 years. Are they going to get back into lock step with everyone else or just be in their own world and again far behind in tech for a few additional years?

Well at this point we have no idea what Sony and Microsoft's long term plans are given the rumored, I'm confirmed :p, upcoming PS4K. Does this extend the console lifecycle a couple more years?

Heck is there a PS5 coming at all? http://www.ign.com/articles/2016/04/20/shuhei-yoshida-reportedly-unsure-if-there-will-be-a-ps5

There is nothing certain as to where the industry will be in five years.

Don't care about Nintendo's output if they're going to just keep making the same 3 games over and over. They're going to have to dig into their catalog of ips for me to care. That's the only thing that will get me to purchase a NX assuming the hardware is up to snuff. Plenty of 3rd party content on other systems that have proven network services for me to give a shit if Nintendo lands a lot of that support or not.
Yeah, the same 3 games like Star Fox which literally releases this week.

Some of you don't even try.

Please be excited.

I hear the same shit for every Nintendo Home Console and they end up with piss poor support. Not falling for it this time until the company shows that it has changed for the better and learnt from its mistakes.

Yup, 6 games. Same old shit mostly rinse and repeat. Honestly, Splatoon is about the only game on the Wii U that surprised me. And that wasn't enough. When they're releasing a more diverse lineup of games is when I'll start caring. Is that hard to understand?

Hopefully!

Well now you are flip flopping on your stance. First it was the 3 same games. Now it's 6. Then you disregard Yoshi, Xenoblade, Donkey Kong, Nintendoland, Pikmin... oh and Star Fox

Yeah same old shit lmfao.

It seems that you just don't really care for the majority of Nintendo's IPs.

The game changed art styles mid development along with control schemes.
It also might be 3 areas, but they're pretty densely packed.

Plus in some cases you go back to open up completely new sections of those areas, including dungeons obviously.

I always end up talking about Skyward Sword one way or another :p

No, no one should fall for any pre-launch hype. Always be skeptical. It is literally nintendo's job to prove to the consumers that their console has value. They failed at that job for wii u.

Posts like emily's make some of us hopeful that nintendo will finally provide value to give their console mass appeal, but never take anything at face value, always be skeptical, and always wait for nintendo to show their cards before making a decision.

Me? Nintendo makes zelda, I'm all in. Zelda is worth nearly any price, for me.

Are you talking about first party or third party support?

Yeah I honestly can't remember if Nintendo has ever promised increased first party output like this. Also this time we have definitive proof that they at least did a major restructuring, so I'm willing to believe Emily on this one.

Honestly, who cares? Who is buying NX to play Call of Duty at this point? If they really can significantly increase exclusives, that's enough.

And for fuck's sake dont let this be the time they decide not to do backcompat. If this thing can play Wii U games, I am in day one. If not, I wait.

My sentiments, too. I mean, I suppose I could understand it for a person who ABSOLUTELY can only buy one console... You'd probably be missing out a lot by only getting the NX. But with the exception of maybe the Virtual Boy, Nintendo's titles alone have always been enough for me to buy each console... so far, anyway.

Thanks for supporting my point. You just listed most of the stuff they're constantly remaking and I am growing tired of. Thanks.

Starfox also looks beyond mediocre.

p.s. when I said the same 3 games I wasn't necessarily being literal. Even if it's 6, 10, or 20 I don't care. Getting tired of the same shit. Point stands.

Instead of focusing our attention solely on hardware, we should really be having a discussion about NX’s software. Based on things I’ve heard, I am 100% confident that the NX’s software output will blow away the Wii U’s software output (which was never impressive to begin with). In a single year, the NX will build a larger library of games than Wii U produced in three or four years.

Erm, excuse me, never impressive?

The NX is going to have updates of all the Nintendo IP's, Mario Kart, Zelda, Smash, Splatoon, Donkey Kong, Mario (platformer) etc, all the same things that have been seen on the WiiU.

Your posts read like you were a moody teenager that got mad at Nintendo when they released a purple console with a handle and a bunch of "kiddie" games and never got over it. Nintendo doesn't "make the same games" more than any other publisher anyway.

All I have to say is don't count Nintendo out. They are pretty damn relentless and when they do strike it right (Mario/Zelda in the 80s, Pokemon in the 90s, the Wii in the 00s) they get a home run. That may come to the dismay of some 12-year olds wanting to play console warriors, but for everyone else, it can be damn near entertaining.

I look forward to whatever they bring to the table.

And there is the 12-year old console warrior we were looking for! It's okay, no judgement. Go play the other consoles, it is a video game. Not a life altering event. Nintendo is a lot like every other software publisher, they release innovative games but they also release their equivalents to Mario Party/Assassin Creed/Call of Duty/Battlefield.

Those games are a lot like vegetable lasagna, its comfort food. ;)

It seems like she's strictly talking quantity in this post (from what I can tell).

If you follow emily you'd know she's never been keen on the Wii U. She's a gamecube girl, iirc. She doesn't deny the wii u has good games, but overall, she values the wii u library as being the least impressive (and impactful to the industry) out of all of nintendo's consoles.

I argue Wii U > Gamecube, but she makes a lot of valid points, as well. GCN had franchises that are currently nonexistant(f-zero) or really good entires in franchises, like thousand year door, and new IP like pikmin, animal crossing (in the west, at least), etc.

Basically, gamecube had more new IP and some of the best versions of some franchises (at the time, almost EVERY new entry was the best version of the game at that time). Wii U has one new major IP?

I liked my Gamecube more than anything Nintendo has released since then. Honestly, I feel like Nintendo started going downhill with the N64 even though I still loved that system also.

You can't change almost two decades of doing one thing, and then get me to think that Nintendo has learned anything. Ever since the N64 days third parties eventually give up on Nintendo consoles. And as much as I enjoy playing Nintendo games and watching all their franchises with better graphics, I need the third party big guns to keep me playing. So no, I am not excited.

I was expecting this to be a testing of the waters, with the true iterative future beginning in the next (and final) generation with systems designed to be iterated upon by all three (or two if NX flops and Nintendo drops out). Looking at PS NEO's CPU, I don't think that I'm wrong.

Valid complaints, easy to see nintendo like that from the outside, for sure. Hopefully nintendo proves otherwise w/ nx.

Don't be excited, be skeptical. It's nintendo's job to prove to you it's worth it. Not your job to become a nintendo fan again.

All this thread is doing is making some of us hopeful that nintendo WILL be able to show value to people, but again, we're skeptical. You can be hopeful and skeptical at the same time.

Gamecube was the height for some IPs no doubt. Paper Mario, Wave Race, F-Zero were great.

I can't believe we didn't get a regular Animal Crossing Wii-U game. I hope they moved it to a launch NX title.

Yes we should always remain sekptical . Not much left till E3 let us have patience.

I agree with this up to a point; Nintendo definitely has, at least relatively speaking, a much better shot at rejuvenating their hardware business by doubling down on first-party support than they do at winning back AAA third-party support or at catching lightning in a bottle again.

I don’t, however, agree that Wii U’s software sales offer particularly compelling evidence that they can pull this off. Yes, Wii U had a high attach rate for key first-party titles, but that’s exactly what you’d expect when a platform holder is primarily catering to an existing, already-loyal fanbase. That fanbase won’t disappear overnight, but it’s far from clear that it isn’t shrinking, let alone that Nintendo is capable of significantly growing it.

Nintendo's userbase is the combined 3DS/WiiU audience with the exception of overlap (however many fans would still double dip hardware in the event of a shared library)

Of course nothing is officially confirmed yet but I think talking in terms of a "home console userbase" is an outdated concept

GameCube was definitely not better than the N64 when it came to first-party releases. Not even close!!

No doubt about that. Best Mario Kart. Best platformer (really top two or three). Best Star Fox. Best Zelda games. Diddy Kong Racing. I'll concede Smash, Pikmin and Animal Crossing but that is it.

quantity over quality then, that is the wrong way if this is the case.

But Pikmin on the WiiU is another level on the WiiU, the best version of AC is New Leaf on the 3DS, furthmore the best version of most Nintendo IP's is on the WiiU, the thing is, the N64 took Nintendo IP's into the 3D world, the Wii enabled a unique way to control and interact with Nintendo IP's, the WiiU took Nintendo IP's into HD, what is left, I know that gameplay wins over graphics, but could Mario Kart, Smash, Pikmin, Mario (platform) look any-better on the NX, maybe but the increase is going to be incremental.

I did have Splatoon and it was pretty fun but after about six months it got boring for me, I have all the Nintendo consoles back to the SNES and in all honesty I am getting tired of the same old Nintendo IP's and Splatoon simply won't cut it for me, I have a PS4 and X1 and I am simply not willing to spend £300 odd on a NX that will only last until the PS5/NextBOX are released in four/five years, I got stung buying the WiiU at launch and I simply will not invest £300 to play Nintendo IP's that I am tiring of.

The WiiU stands a good chance of being the last Nintendo console I buy, I simply do not trust Nintendo any-more.

W101 was the best game on the WiiU imo.

quantity over quality then, that is the wrong way if this is the case.

.

That's a faulty assumption to make.

It's amazing actually. People have a hard time believing Nintendo will increase their output but if they do then clearly that means the quality of the games will suffer.

I expect a lot of unfinished/patch-them-later games.

And that would be fine.

8 months with no new releases murdered the Wii U. They can't have that happen again. I'd go as far as to say If it came down to having a year like the Wii U's first year, or the Nintendo equivalent of Master Chief Collection or Assassin's Creed: Unity, it'd be in their best interest to choose the latter. The most important thing is physically getting games on shelves.

If you ignore the mechanics because opinions, Smash 4 factually outdoes Melee in terms of production. You have to remember this is two games with oodles of content, some of the best newcomers in terms of mechanics and move sets crazy amount of polish and even updates. Sakurai and his team should be proud. Honestly, going forward I don't expect anything like that again with this series.

There is a lot more to SS than just 3 main areas.

Each main area has a second sub-area

I would say that as a general rule these sub areas, while they had a lot of potential conceptually, didn't improve the quality of the game.

I'll believe it when i see it, Emily.

I'm also interested in what they will do when this generation ends for Sony and Microsoft in 2 or 3 years. Are they going to get back into lock step with everyone else or just be in their own world and again far behind in tech for a few additional years?

It'd be really shocking if they didn't choose an architecture that can grow with them at a reasonable pace for the foreseeable future.

I honestly think Nintendo is content and at the point where they will be just doing their own thing. I mean they are making money and they have to know they can't directly compete with MS or Sony right now in the console space even with NX.

Except that they killed the Wii U a year earlier than usual and seem like they are trying to restart and wipe the slate clean.

Hope there will be some info but it's a long shot...

Are you talking about first party or third party support?

Third party or First Party. I just want a constant influx of good games. No major droughts etc.. I doubt they will be able to do that without third party support because first party can only produce so much at a time. First party cannot compensate for the hundreds of third party devs out there but if they can produce games at unprecedented rates than great.

Yeah I am playing the waiting game. Basically I want SNES era Nintendo back - Great third party and first party games. I was spoilt for choice.

The ol' good cop bad cop routine.

I'm onto you.

She was pretty blunt when she pointed out the gen-over-gen copy-paste excuses Iwata kept using for Nintendo's shortcomings. Maybe something like that again?

Yeah me too... pretty saddening thinking that Smash 4 is going to be one of a kind.

Funny how when a girl talks about stuff, she's only doing it for attention. Yet when a boy does it, he's a goddamned hero.

People aren't very nice to insiders that they doubt.
