Epic's Mark Rein: 'PSP is going to be the hot system in the next year.'

GI: In terms of GDC, do you think that next-gen is going to be the big buzz at the show this year?

MR: Well, yeah. We're doing three speeches at GDC - we're actually doing four, but the fourth one is on cheating, so it's not really related - but our three major speeches that we're doing at GDC are all related to next-generation game development. So yeah, absolutely. There's no question that that's what's probably number one in people's minds.

Number two is probably the PSP. I think that's really going to be a hot system in the next year, so I think there'll be a lot of activity around that. All our stuff is certainly focused on next-gen, though, and I imagine that's going to be the same with all the middleware vendors.

GI: Do you have anything planned for PSP? A port of Unreal Engine 2, perhaps?

MR: We don't know. It'll really depend on what happens game-wise. As you know, Midway is doing the next Unreal Tournament titles, and they have expressed an interest in it. We said yeah, we'd love to see it - so it's just really a matter of wait and see. Like I say, we've been talking about it, but we don't have any specific plans. I think it'd be great to get an Unreal Tournament title multiplayer on PSP.

i guess an fps could work on psp...face buttons for movement, analog nub for aiming, d-pad for weapons selection, triggers for crouch and jump. or whatever. i still want to see a psp game that really puts the analog nub through its paces...it works alright for ridge racers, but then ridge racer has never called for fine motions.

I'm sure they could figure it out...

UT and Quake 3 both appeared on Dreamcast, and the PSP button layout practically mimics that.

Wait, wait, wait. Midway is doing the next PC UT? Or just console versions?

As sexy as PSP is, I'd like to see an UT on NDS, the (touch)control is begging for it!

You cant even make out anything on the DS. It took me a while to realise i was shooting metroids in that fps game, PS1 wasnt that bad ever. Also DS is a kids console UT wont come out for it.

I hope they make good fps on handhelds, especially multiplayer ones. PSP hardware makes it more likely. :)

I take it you haven't played many PS1 games? :)

With PS1 games at least you can tell what you are looking at. In Metroid you can barely make out where the doors are :lol The metroids are just a bunch a of pixels. Thats what you think when you play the game. PSP on the other hand is way beyond just trying to rcognise what you're looking at.

It's like they made the nub for Pure.

Well some of the PSP reviews say its the best analogue stick ever. So its gotta be pretty nifty at least.

Well, it is only a demo. Compare First Hunt to the early PS1 1st person games (Crime Crackers, Kileak the Blood, King's Field, Space Griffon VF-9, Jumping Flash, etc) and it looks like a visual masterpiece in comparison.

Midway is PUBLISHING all Unreal products, either PC or console. They aren't developing them, just publishing them. Now Epic will probably outsource the next UT game, but Midway is publishing them.

Metroids Hunters might have more to do with it being by NST. They are quite sucky. I also dont see where the good gameplay is. Its basically a Metroid fps. Not a proper fps. They need to change Metroid enough to make it work as a fps. So far they cant seem to decide and the quality seems to suffer.

Subtle.

Did GC get an Unreal game? Maybe i'm wrong here and adults buy the system as much as their Ps and Xb.

The Hunters demo is just a dark game and I think that has a lot more to do with why you can barely make things out than the DS graphic capabilities. It's a problem inherent in any game that tries to portray a too dark environment, even on current consoles.

Yeah... 'cause with 1 title that was released nearly 5 years ago, we all know the Unreal franchise really flourished on the PS2, as well.

Publishers have control. I do not like this deal.

Eh? I play lots of old games, more so than current games. I have no problem playing hideos Jaguar title. I also like the stylus control method for a FPS and I'd like to see used it on a fps. If UT on PSP used the ABXY buttons as a second stick, ala N64, then I might bite.

It depends on the developer. With someone like Epic, Midway does not boss them around.

Same thing with id. Activision does not tell them what games to make.

Was wondering why he would have said it was the hot system this year...but he didn't. Just a tad misleading. ;P
