Epic's XBox 2 project "Gears of War"

Microsoft is expected to officially unveil the Xbox 2 platform between now and E3 and reportedly ship it within the year

I will be very surprised if they can make this a successful launch. It seems a little rushed so far (and yes I know about the dev kits being out there for a year).

What seems rushed about it?

I think they will have an incredible launch, I mean:

Perfect Dark Zero
Gears of War
Unreal III
etc

And you know these games will look amazing. They are going guns blazing, I expect them to kick ass and become #1 next gen.

We really haven't seen any of the games, and while they may be planning a huge "OH MY FUCKING GOD LOOK AT ALL THIS AMAZING SHIT WE'VE BEEN KEEPING SECRET FOR THE PAST YEAR!" type of E3 show, it seems too good to be true.

We still don't know the specifics of the hardware (although, some of us may think we do), and what about the actual production of such a cutting edge unit? Can they get enough of them out in time?

Again, I could be proven dead wrong come E3, but still...

are you kidding? everything i've heard so far points to an absolutely HUGE launch line up. i was thinking it should be the best system launch ever :)

I'll ask the same question as Santacruzer did in another thread. Is PDZ confirmed as a lunch title? Seeing how Rare is nowadays I somewhat doubt it.

This does not equates to a rushed launch at all. MS, and all the console developers for that matter, is working on next-gen tech under wraps since Xbox is still on the market.

Sounds good, but Microsoft better be ready to support the Xbox Next for the WHOLE generation (unlike Sega), because if the Xbox Next launches this year.. Sony will start their hype machine for PS3.

Sony: "WAIT FOR PS3 ITLL BE MUCH BETTER THAN XBOX 2"

I'm pretty sure it's all just speculation; although, it sure would be nice.

A while back I was watching Electric Playground and Vic was interviewing that guy who left Nin10do and joined M$, he basically said "yeah it looks amazing" (PD)

This was sometime ago so yeah I they they can have it ready for launch.

What would it equate to then? A well-planned one? Because all I've heard from the Microsoft camp is "No fucking way we let Sony get a year head start on us! Nuh-uh! Not this time!" Sony, on the other hand, doesn't seem to be in that much of a hurry. And God only knows what Nintendo is up to.

Basically, we've really seen all of jack and shit from Microsoft regarding the NextBox. Hell, at least the last time around they gave us a martial arts robot video with anti-aliasing.

E3 will tell the tale, I guess. Developers seem to be pretty happy with the machine, though.

MS hasnt confirmed ANYTHING about Xbox 2, let alone launch games..

Chiggs, just because MS hasnt said anything about Xbox Next does not mean they are pulling it out of their ass... just because they dont SAY anything to you about what they are doing does not mean they arent doing it.

You seem to gauge MS' readiness by what YOU know of the next console, when you are not a developer. You don't need to know about it yet. MS doesn't want you to "know" about it yet, because Xbox is still in the market.

I wouldn't say MS is ready or not because, frankly, I don't know. But all rumors seem to point to a well planned launch.

I wonder if this is one of the beasts you ride

Wasn't Xbox done, from start to finish, in like a year to a year and a half? And that was a successful launch. And now they have a namebrand from which to work off of.

Yeah, I believe you're right. It might have been about 18 months (when it was still Project Midway).

Will they have a Halo-quality launch title, though?

The name is not new, it could also be Hollow Point or whatnot trademarks Epic has. But if they heard this was that specific Xbox 2 game, then cool. Nice name.

The PS2 only had SSX (which is crap IMO) and look how well it did.

Smuggler's Run and Tekken Tag weren't too bad. They also launched with a next-gen Madden (which helped quite a bit, considering that people had never seen those kind of graphics applied to a football game).

And what about Fantavision? ;)

I just think it all sucked apart from Fifa 2001. PS2 launch was the worst i have ever encountered. All my opinion of course and i am known to be a fucking moron :lol

If anything, Xbox2's launch should be much more prepared than Xbox's was. Look at Xbox's hardware. It's so close to being a PC. It looks like MS slapped that together, and paid dearly for it. On the other hand, we've heard that Xbox2 will be smaller and we've heard about it's architecture being a bit different from a PC and will be cost effective.

Like I said in the EA lineup topic, MS will have an awesome lineup at E3 (and thus at launch too). All the 1st/2nd party dev at MS have shifted to Xbox 2 since Q3 2003. Why do you think MS has announced so little games (none ?) since last E3 and Forza ? Because everything else is on Xbox 2, and MS wants to impress when they make they officially unveil the console.
Xbox's death has been rushed, true enough, but Xbox 2's launch has been planned since a very long time now and could very well be the best console launch (games wise) ever.

Shooting, shooting, more shooting and probably a bit of racing (PGR3). Not the console for me it seems. (yes I have an Xbox and yes I regret buying it)

The japanese games for Xbox 2 have yet to be announced. DOA4 is a given, expect something from the Magatama team (RPG last I heard) and one or two games from Sega. There will certainly be more games, but that's all I've heard about.

What about Mistwalker? Are they doing a xbox 2 game or what?

I don't know much about what's happening in Japan for Microsoft, sorry.
As for the Sega games, I've heard they are the games that were mentioned by Amusement Vision last year, shifted to Xbox 2. I don't know anything more, I wish I did though. As always with Sega, expect them to do something stupid.

It is rushed to the extent that the time from the actual unveiling to the time when its sitting on shelves is very short. There won't be a year of hype or anything like that. You'll see it, you'll geek out on the graphics, and before you can lose any interest - it will be ready to purchase. I think Microsoft is counting on that in a way - get you so geeked up that you'll be likely to make an impulse buy before anyone has anything significantly bad to say :) It also greatly cuts into Sony's 'anti-hype' campaign as welll.

I don't think Sony is too concerned with how XBox 2 does this holiday season since it will be available in limited quantities. Hopefully MS doesn't stack the launch too much. The system will sell out this holiday regardless of the lineup. They need games in 2006 to keep the momentum going by not having a huge software drought.

MS has some big plans for the end of 2005, they will do everything they can to have enough systems not to be sold out too quickly.
The fact that they will have the IP (or at least every rights) of all the system components will allow them to produce Xbox 2 anywhere they want so they will be able to mass produce it in multiple countries and factories. They should not be as dependant on 3rd party manufacturing as before (especially NVidia). And since they should use some rather "standard" manufacturing process for the CPU and GPU, the chips should be rather easily produced by TSMC or other big east asian foundries. They will not have to rely on very high profile manufacturing process like Sony may have chosen.
I really hope they wil manage to launch almost simultaneously in all territories, like some 3rd party european lineup seems to indicate (EA to name them, with the Godfather Xbox 2 european SKU in Q4 2005). It would be very bad for them if they have the Europeans (and japanese) wait months without any big exclusive game on Xbox 1.

I have a good feeling that Sony will do a few things to counter the Xenon launch...

1) Release several high profile PS2 "must haves" for that same week.
2) Lower the price on PSTwo and PSP to make both of them even hotter commodities
3) Hype the PS3 and it's unbelievable graphics to no end and show some upcoming games

Microsoft is going to have a heck-of-a counter-counter measure for that :)

I think they'll be up to the task.

Funny. I seem to remember a similar counter for Halo 2 (sans PS3 and PSP of course) :p
