With Sony fortifying its censorship policies for Japanese eroge (short for “erotic game”) franchises like Omega Labyrinth and Super Neptunia on PlayStation consoles, Japanese game developers seem to be flocking towards the Nintendo Switch with their adult content. The topic recently gained traction on Japanese social media when a Japanese shopper shared a photo of a Nintendo Switch software corner at a retailer, which happened to be lined with numerous adult games.

Some of the games in the post include RE: D Cherish, Da Capo III (D.C. III), and JINKI -Infinity-. While some of these games are censored (for example, JINKI -Infinity- is the censored version of JINKI -Unlimited-), seeing two shelves filled with physical copies shows just how big the demand for eroges is.

While PC gaming in Japan has seen a rise over the years according to a study by game industry consultancy Kantan Games Inc., Japanese console owners still make up the majority of the country’s game consumer market. This makes Sony’s PlayStation 4 and 5, the Nintendo Switch, and to some extent, the Microsoft Xbox Series X|S the go-to areas for game developers and publishers (including those who work on eroges) to peddle their titles. But since the Xbox hasn’t done particularly well in Japan and Sony has cracked down on adult content, that leaves the Nintendo Switch to take on Japan’s steamiest and more adult-centered content.

The eroge boom isn’t just limited to physical copies, either. On a related note, the My Nintendo Store has grown quite full of eroges – some of which contain sensitive words such as “hentai” that are not appropriate for a family-centered console. Though a lot of these “hentai”-titled games are rapidly produced overseas by people wanting to make a quick buck, it just goes to show how easy it is to peddle such content on Nintendo’s digital storefronts.

I started Moero Crystal H a couple of days ago and I'm enjoying it :V Not because it's an eroge but it's a dungeon crawler (favorite genre atm). I wasn't sure whether to buy it or not because sometimes gameplay is bad but they try to make it up with nudes and stuff but it's a dungeon crawler, it's not as if they can mess it up that badly. Unfortunately it got some stupid choices like having to rub and tap the screen to befriend girl monsters (who are like pokemon, you need to befriend them in order to get them on your team to explore the dungeon). I doubt I would buy visual novels or puzzle games with eroge but if it's a dungeon crawler, count me in.

All the nekopara games are on switch and have been for awhile besides maybe vol 4.

In Japan regarding physical games Switch sell more, so maybe some of these niche games from small Japanese companies maybe only release the physical version or console version in general for Switch because it's what sells more and maybe these games don't sell enough in other platforms to make the other physical versions profitable.

In the same way that when releasing them in the west is the opposite: they sometimes release PS only physical version in the west because in the west is the only platform where it's worthy for them to release them in physical.

When a console game gets released on physical there's a different, more strict age rating approval (age rating isn't a Sony/Nintendo thing) and many publishers decide to don't reach certain age ratings because if not some big retailers won't sell the game. So decide to sef-censor the games themselves to be able to release it in physical (so not because of Sony or Nintendo).

There's an age rating system to classify the game depending on its type of content (not quality), like in the other consoles.

It's the developer and publisher who decides if a shovelware game features bunnies or woman, not Sony or Nintendo.

That article is bullshit, there are many games featuring nudity or sexual content on PS since then. And in any case, it's the external and independent age rating systems like ESRB, PEGI, ZERO, etc. who analyzes the theme content of the games for each region, not Sony or Nintendo. When sending a game for certification to Sony and Nintendo what they verify is basically that the game regarding stability and security fits a certain minimums, that it follows the standards regarding OS/platform wide best practices of things like trophies and button usages or menus, or that the game got their PEGI/ESRB/etc. rating.

This is also the reason of why some games change things like the nudity level depending on region. As example, Conan Exiles features full nudity if you play on a EU server (sold physically as PEGI 18) but partial nudity if you play on a US server (ESRB M 17+, not AO). I assume this change affects the versions who have physical editions in these regions (PS and XB, not PC).

They haven't really been that company in a long time. Back then they didn't want a million lawsuits over the idea that little Johnny played a game with blood in it. Once the ESRB got introduced Nintendo started letting up with MK2 having all it's blood and finishers. They didn't stop mature games from coming to their consoles, even encouraging it during the N64 and GC eras, but by then it was too late, M rated games sold poorly on Nintendo consoles as the idea that it was a children/family only console had solidified. I still remember people not knowing games like TrueCrime and DefJam Vendetta/Fight for NY were on the GC.

That depends on the games you play, ones you bought , and what you have in your wishlist and what you viewed. I don’t recall ever seeing that in my suggested game queue.

The biggest issue is lack of discovery tools/filters. Same shit exists on Steam, but I never see that for the most part.

However if I go into eShop sales, it’s free for all. There are no recommendations, ability to filter out tags, discord queues and so on. It’s aggravating as hell, especially considering how slow the whole thing is.
