So, I just got EO4, and while I'm not sure how I'm gonna balance my time with the game with Fire Emblem: Awakening in the mix, I wanna give the game a shot. I had no clue what was going on with FOEs when I was playing the demo, thus I didn't get that far, but I've mostly figured out how to avoid them... and I'm still dealing with total party wipes sometimes, haha. This is how my party looks right now:

Landsknecht
Fortress
Sniper
Runemaster
Medic

Kinda playing this game by ear, and it's not entirely working out. I wouldn't mind some tips or something, especially for the Angry Baboons. Bastards are guaranteed to ruin my day.

That's the game saying "Hello there". They were a pain in the ass to most of us, but since you have a Sniper try to bind his arms, that will seal some of his attacks and reduce the other to 50% damage. Also if possible taunt with the Fortress so it attacks him/her instead.

I just got my first storage upgrade, but can you upgrade the normal inventory too? I can't handle all this phat frog cheek lewt.

Nope, you are locket to 60 items for the whole game. It's only been a problem for me when I tried the "hunt as much as you can" quest, or when I went to grind the first few levels with my secondary party.

Balls. I'm constantly running out of space.

Another dumb question: what's the deal with the Mandragora(Mandrake?)'s second drop? Is it just incredibly rare or is there a trick to it?

Edit: Nevermind. I learned how to google.

2/3 dragons done. Lightning dragon is left... I heard this guy is a pain to fight though but we'll see.

and retiring question:
so I went ahead and retired my lvl 70 Fortress. After an hour and a half of grinding, I managed to get my new Fortress back to lvl 70. I compared their stats and the new one only has a +5 lead on every stat. Is this... normal? I was expecting a lot more to be honest.

slayn

needs to show more effort.
Hmm, unless someone can inform me of some kind of additional gimmick
besides the canister that puts him at half health
vs the final post game boss I think I need to accept that I can't do it at my level and since I'm unwilling to grind I guess I'm done.

My guys are level 75 never retired but even his most basic physical attacks destroy me let alone his other big attacks.

The thing with FOEs is that they are more like obstacles you must avoid, at least when you first meet them. Try not to engage them until you can clear the boss of the area, or when they have a orange (or blue if you want to be safe) aura.

It's certainly the most difficult, and I made the mistake of taking it down first. I was forced to use quite a few Amritas and Nectars. Some tips:
If you have more than ten buffs total spread out among your characters, he'll cast a spell that removes buffs AND has a high chance of causing instant death. Furthermore, when he gets low on HP I think the threshold is reduced to 5. You might not want to bring the guest into the fight.
Like the other 2 dragons, every turn that's a multiple of 5 he'll do a breath attack. Anti-volt bracelet or the runemaster's volt rune will halve the damage, having both will reduce it to single digits.
His favourite status effect is Paralyze. Refresh Dance (and some luck) is highly recommended.

Do we have a definitive list of FOE favorite foods yet, or things still piecemeal at this point?

I've been using the GFAQs thread (I know, shut up), but I would definitely be interested in a more consolidated, complete list.

fuck you dragons, fuck you.

Your giant scaly asses have nothing on my tiny explorer dick. Fuck yeah, I'm an anteater.

ahh snap I wish I read this sooner.
I beat this dude a few seconds just before reading your post lols. This dude would have been so easy.... if it wasn't for that stupid buff remover breath. I lucked out in the end when he had super low health and used his dumb breath attack to kill only my Fortress. I revived her next turn and destroyed the dragon with my Fire Links for the finish.

I'm about a hour and a half into the game now. I'm not really liking it much yet. This is the other Etrian Odyssey I've played other than the first. I have 2 and 3, but I've never gotten around to them yet. So far, I think the first is by far the better game.

slayn

needs to show more effort.
Decided to make a few more attempts on the final post game boss and succeeded. Level 76, never retired. Won the battle with 1 person dead, my remaining 4 people at < 30hp, no one with any TP left, with my last attack of the round, and the next round the boss would have done its most powerful attack to all.

My arcanist got the killing blow of all people.

edit: some advice from my experience with this boss
First, of course you should prepare the canister. I believe it's green white blue red yellow. Dramatically lowers his damage and will make the 2nd form be at half health. After that, my first problem is that I was killing the first form too quickly of all things. The attack it uses on the first round seems to give you a huge defensive penalty and so when the 2nd form appeared if the 2 claws did some of their row attacks I was dead. By stalling in the first form until that debuff went away I could then survive the initial hits of the second form.

If you bind the legs of the first form it is pretty harmless so I didn't feel at risk in stalling. For the second form, binding the arms of the limbs disables them completely. After you either kill a limb or take too long, the central eye will open and you can start doing respectable damage to the boss. Once the eye opens he always did the same things in the same order:
1. The move the removes buffs (and makes your next action take double TP?)
2. fire damage to all
3. ice damage to all
4. lightning damage to all
5. Huge 1000+ damage hit to all
6. Close the eye and regenerate all limbs (or sometimes confusion to all? I remember something like this but it didn't happen in my final battle for whatever reason)

I survived this nonsense by using aegis ward to block 2. Ice rune + healing let me recover from 3. Head bind to block 4. And 5 was either his head was still bound or I died. I have a suspicion that if you kill all the limbs then the huge attack on 5 won't happen or will be weaker or something but I was usually too busy just trying to get damage in on the eye and killing limbs felt like a waste of turns. Especially because I didn't want all the limbs at full health when they came back. Better to have a limb at low health to kill in a single round to re-open the eye immediately.

No part of the boss has resistances or weaknesses according to the Codex. Limbs have 3000hp. Eye has 70000hp

Finally reached the fourth stratum tonight. The second battle theme definitely lives up to series standards, to say the least. Loving my bushi, too.

How do you do this?

Feed an FoE their favorite food and they'll turn shiny. The two notable ones for most grinding are Dream Eaters (2nd Land, Gold Stinkhorn) and Icy Pincers (3rd Land, Happiness Hare) due to their short respawn times (1 day and 3 day, respectively).

is this the boss after beating all 3 dragons or the one in the 6th Maze... assuming that place even has a boss?

My Nightstalker gets anhiliated in one hit.

I have her in the front row right now with my Dancer and my Fortress. Am I doing it wrong? Since she's melee, I figured having her in the back would decrease her damage.

Any help with the Water Mark reaction Quest? I seriously can't for the love of god figure out the path. I can get a reaction of 2 on the first checkpoint and from there, I can't reach the 2nd checkpoint. Whats even weird is that I got a reaction from a different tile. This is so confusing.

No, that's ok, and is pretty common for NS to die in the front row even in the late game, just trie to Taunt with the Fortress to help her survive.

Wait. What quest now? I don't remember that one. Is that a QR quest?

Nope, its not a QR Quest, its one of the quest when you enter the 5th dungeon. It requires you to follow some sort of path from point a to point b and then find another location. Very confusing, but I think Im missing something here or the clues are just intentionally incomplete. I really dont know.

Its a series of quest from the Count and this one is done in the Cloudy Stronghold, you guys got this one?

Btw, I just solved it. That incomplete clue sure got me.

oh now I know. I still haven't finished the map coord quest the Count gave me. Those two are probably related I'm guessing?

well since we're on this subject, can someone point me to the right direction for the Golden Lair fungus quest?

Nope, front row is where they should be. Make sure to put her in the third slot though. And like Anteo said, use Taunt so she won't get attacked as often. If you're really worried, use Ally Shield too.

4th boss cleared!
Logre
was a big help here, hitting for over 1k per drive. Boss wasn't so hard, other than the
element switch messing up my chase/links, and the self-destruct cutting rather close.
On to the 5th!

The cute girl ;) at the bar recommends a Sniper early on(just hit level 11)but I have a Nightseeker...guess I will level a Sniper as well just in case.

The Arcanist is a near perfect dungeon exploration class. The zones have been very effective against random encounters, ending zones provides a hefty amount of healing, healing stroll tops off everyone's HP between encounters, and there's even a skill for cutting down on floor damage.

But against bosses? Not so much. Binds and status ailments work on support monsters, but they don't land (or stick) on bosses or FOEs. I discovered this the hard way when my party got stomped by that big Baboon quest boss. So, I'll need to rethink my strategy of using one to setup a Nightseeker or disable attacks.

That means my party setup of LFN/RA will need some reshuffling. I think I'll swap out the Nightseeker for a Dancer and optimize the front row for a reliable source of link hits. And I'll swap the Runemaster for a Sniper for a more effective set of binds. Subclassing a Runemaster and Medic in the back row should take care of elemental protection and refreshing/unbinding while I leave the bulk of elemental damage to the Landskamp. Hopefully that'll work a bit better.

Have you been leveling the Circles? Maxed out they have a bit better luck actually landing. That plus Ailment Boost helps a lot.

Also, as far as that boss is concerned, it resists most effects with a few notable exceptions: Poison (because nothing resists it that heavily), Confuse (for the Conditional Drop), and Curse (same case as Poison, as far as I'm aware). Blind has a decent hit-rate as well, though I wouldn't rely on it.

If you really need the help, find the best LUC+TEC Food you can (if you have access to the 4th Land, the Rare Bird there is ideal) as that'll help a bit in your chances of landing a status effect.

Binds work on bosses and they are pretty dang necessary at times. In fact status effects work on FOEs and bosses in general, I never have too much trouble with them.

I had the 4th stratum boss bound a few different ways and poisoned for much of the fight...all four times I fought him, trying to get his conditional drop.

Also yeah Snipers are super great in the early game. Keep leveling those binds. Never put a single point into their attack skill tree.

I'd maxed out the poison and arm binding circles, but they wouldn't hit for turns on end. And when they did land, they'd wear off quickly even with the black mist burst. So my Nightseeker wasn't able to do enough damage and I didn't have arm binds to disable his special moves. Perhaps my level 32-33 team was too low to take him, but the purple aura on the map implied otherwise.

I like the Arcanist, but I get the feeling they work better in a support role and a dedicated binder would be more effective in the long term.

There is a burst that extends the duration of ailments on enemies, I use that a lot.

My party is 2L 1F 1M and 1RM (one is debuffing other is link sepcialist) I will probably sub-class one of the 2 Landshcneck later when it become available.

My question is : i don't feel like leveling a new character (currently my party is 16) is 2L okay ? or should i have chosen a Dancer or another class instead, i'm starting to have doubt .

On the other hand i must admit that i am having no trouble so far and fight with FOEs has been smooth.

Don't worry about leveling characters right now. At 3 different points in the game you get the chance to level any character to the average level of a party at that point (though you can only do that twice per event) so if you want to try something different, just wait a bit longer.

If you want to know when this happens:

Average Level:
25
, When:
After the 2nd Maze is complete
Average Level:
35
, When:
After the 3rd Maze is complete
Average Level:
45
, When:
After the 4th Maze is complete
