EU and Japan to agree on trade deal next week

but how can they have trade if one side censors their porn and the other doesn't? There'll be mass hysteria once Japan starts getting uncensored porn from Europe.

Give me cheaper cheese. Yes, please.
So much cheese in Japan is just "cheese," and not any listed type. Maybe there's the qualifier "meltable," but that tells you nothing about the taste.

And to think I entertained the idea of moving to Japan. Guess it'll never happen, unless this deal changes things significantly.

If Japan can export cars to the EU tariff free, what's the point of the Japanese car firms being in the U.K. post Brexit?
That would be an issue with or without Brexit. But with Brexit it also becomes a greater issue if the UK and EU can't agree a FTA.

But it's not like Japan is having to accept freedom of movement and all the other stuff people moan about so it's clearly possible to get a FTA deal with the EU without all those concessions.

It is because a Free Trade Deal isn't the same as Single Market Access.

Thanks for stating the obvious?

I'm all for this if it means I get some of my nice cheese from Spain to eat here too for cheaper (right now most cheese here in Japan that isn't terrible, is terribly expensive).

I guess this means no more customs fees when importing from Japan. Still probably have to pay VAT though.

Silver Spoon lied to me???

That was the professor's hidden stash lol Also if I'm not mistaken, the professor does mention the cheese they used in the pizza was the most common type usually preferred in Japan.

From what I keep reading about EU deals it sounds like all they produce over there is cheese.

Nice! When I was in living in Japan i missed cheese soooo much!!!
So when I come back I hope you will have better and cheaper cheese! Also cheaper beer would be nice

Are you telling me Japan has never enjoyed the delight that is having hundreds off different awesome cheeses at one's disposal? :O

Japanese "cheese" sucks, but so does every other cheese that's not from France, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria or Switzerland.
Italy, UK, Greece, and Spain also make amazing cheese.

America makes some good cheddars, and we can just import the rest. Mwahaha

Love to hear stuff like this. Protectionism is not the solution right now. Many countries have benefitted from globalization. Now its not the time to turn your back on it.
This kind of free trade and the EU as a whole is exactly because of protectionism! There is no such thing as true free trade. These deals are negotiated on that basis!

They do have good cheese in Japan,
though you have to go to certain stores.
It's expensive unfortunately.

Cheaper cheese and available in more places would be ideal.

I'd recommend, if you can of course, trying out any of the following:

Queijo de São Jorge (Açores/Azores) - Matured (depending on the number of months either soft or hard, buyers choice) and very pungent. Awesome with basically any and everything.

Queijo da Serra da Estrela
- Very soft (almost fondue like, think of a softer Brie) and delicious. Great with bread or tasty crackers.

Queijo Terrincho - Semi-matured and peppery. The sort of cheese that just "vanishes" from thin air :v

Queijo de Évora
- Matured Sheep cheese. An amazing mix of salty and spicy.

And I'll end the post here as it's off-topic enough :P And then of course we also get the best of Europe too, so Japan not getting any of that is indeed a shame.

Cheese and car parts?

What about important stuff like video games? Or is that what the EU is holding back cheese and car parts for?

Video Games are already Tax-Free, that's why for example Sony in EU never advertised the PS3 linux feature and eventually removed it.
