If anything, he should have mentioned Star Driver or Un-Go, which actually had some really ugly episodes. Star Driver 21 was so bad.
Un-Go had no "ugly episodes" though. The entire show was just ugly because the designs were atrocious. Lulz.

Probably; I can forgive the cheapassness of Star Driver since the final episode made it clear that they were just saving their forces to blow their entire load in one go. The writing, on the other hand, had no justification for being shit.
Oh, so in flight it gets upgraded to a fish wearing Napoleon Bonaparte's hat. That's much better!

The Japanese Blu-rays (~6500 yen each) will have English subtitles on them. I'm guessing they're doing the same thing with Gundam AGE. No legal streaming option, so if you want it, you gotta shell out the big bucks.

I'm not a huge anime fan, but I must admit, I absolutely loved E7. Looking forward to seeing AO!
Episode 1 - Born Slippy / Deep Blue
I'm really surprised. This feels really well produced, and it's also very enjoyable to watch. The strangest thing is, against all expectations - it FEELS like Eureka Seven. The way the scenes are directed and framed, the colors, the backgrounds, the animation motion, tons of nice 2D mechanical stuff like cars, ships, etc. It really does feel like a new E7 production.
Kyoda doesn't seem to have lost it either, the first episode is well paced, and MUCH better than the manga in terms of pace and how scenes occur. I like the freshness of the lead voices, there's a rawness to their voices, but also an honesty. Something the original E7 definitely had.
Oh and if anyone has any concerns about the music, forget it. The music is fantastic, and probably the strongest point of the show next to the visuals. I'm really glad BONES finally got to make another show like this with character designs which actually look "normal" and nice, instead of the garbage from Star Driver, Un-Go, and Towa no Quon. This feels familiar, and it's pretty nostalgic.
Really hope they can keep this up.

The manga is clearly adapted from the anime. They probably had the scripts and storyboards to draw from, but the anime is much MUCH better directed.
I got a chance to check the first episode myself, and it's not bad at all, the animation is good, and some of the music is good, though one piece in particular was too repetitive, but I'd say it doesn't match up the hype duckroll is trying to spread. If you're looking for lots of action and mecha and fighting in the first episode, you won't find it. Based on the preview, they're saving all that for next episode. I'm definitely looking forward to this, and like duckroll, I hope they can keep this quality, or better yet, improve it.

Looks like I was right in believing! Can't wait to watch the episode.
I hated renton because he was an extremely whinney protagonist and did a lot of things in the series that pissed me off. I didn't mind the rest of the characters (even the kids LOL) but hopefully the new series has a better/stronger lead.
Just watched episode 1, and I'm with duckroll. A very solid start.
I agree it feels like E7, but even more amazingly it even carries this nostalgic feeling about the original to me, despite featuring a completely different cast and setting (atm anyways). Loved the opening with Ao flying above the ocean, set to the wondeful BGM, that sequence alone did a lot to reassure me of how genuine this is looking to be. Also, the scene at the end where Ao
... It felt like a scene right out of the first series. Between that, the fantastic music, the honest interactions between Ao and Naru, I'm pretty happy.
One complaint...the ED, both song and sequence. E7 had consistently amazing EDs and OPs. Compared to Secret Base, the 1st ED of the original series, which was a wonderful song and accompanied by a fantastic animation sequence, this is a huge disappointment.
I agree it feels like E7, but even more amazingly it even carries this nostalgic feeling about the original to me, despite featuring a completely different cast and setting (atm anyways). When can we expect a dubbed version? I thought E7's dub was actually pretty good, so I watched it in that.
Episode 1
Well, believing paid off. This was great, looked great and felt great. I never understood all the complaint about Renton being a whiny kid. He never sounded whiny to me and, just like Renton, Ao too seems not to be a whiny kid.
I liked the connections in style to the old show, with the eyecatch and the to be continued said at the end.
The action was good even if it consisted only of explosions, smoke and Ao running.
Best part of the show though? No Chiaki Omigawa to make us all deaf!
Thank you based Bones for at least sparing me in the first episode!
Can't wait for episode 2 but also can't wait for all the little details to make sense of the starting relationships and where this all sits relative to the first E7.

Since Bandai Entertainment has withdrawn from North America and Bandai Visual isn't keen on licensing some of their properties at the moment even for streaming... who the hell knows. :-/

In short, its the real deal.
Eureka 7 AO 1
Gotta say, I was pretty impressed by the first episode. Obviously the visuals are outstanding, but the episode was also well directed with some great shots, and pretty well paced too. Even though the show is different, it still "felt" like Eureka 7 which is nice. Ao himself is not a Renton Jr and has his own personality,Another thing that impressed me was the soundtrack. I wasn't sure if it could even come close to the original, particularly after I heard they were moving away from the electronic stuff, but this first episode had some really excellent pieces of music. There were a couple that mixed classical orchestra stuff with rock that I thought were cool as well. If it is any indication, then soundtrack could easily be as memorable as the first series. Also,he already seems to have a girlfriend too so that means he is pretty boss.lol at Ao's van getting smashed at the end of the episode, guess he won't be driving that lame thing anymore!
I'm a little confused about a couple plot points, as I am a little hazy on how E7 ended.The Scub left the planet correct? I guess they are back now? Also why has everyone seemingly re-associated themselves with nationalities and such that were not present in Eureka 7, like Japanese and so on?
So yeah, promising start to a series that I think most of us were pretty apprehensive of. Next week should be pretty awesome judging from the preview.
In short, its the real deal.
Just feels like an obvious tease is all.
And man, the opening music is just so fantastic, I just love the whole intro sequence.

It would be hilarious if it's actually a sequel to the E7 movie, and not the TV series.

I liked it. It's definitely different and doesn't feel like a re-tread of the original. It takes a lot of balls to not even show the main mech in the first ep.
The art is fantastic, though none of the character designs are as good as the original; but the original had some of the best characters ever so it's hard to match. I really like the stocky dude with the sunglasses.
The main kid seems alright. He's not a loser or silent or annoying like 90% of leads in anime. He seems to have a decent head on his shoulder. The Naru girl seems good too. I like the KFC leader guy of the loli squad.
Music had some good tracks, again not up their with the original, but the original E7's score is hard to match. The track when the car dudes are flying and the track when the G Monster is exploding things were both real good.
So far it's finger's crossed, hope the show is good. Nothing in ep1 has me worried and nothing in ep1 has cemented that it's going to be great either. Was a good first ep and very much looking forward to ep2 to see how their action direction and budget is these days.

E7, though being a fan favorite was not a critical success at all. It's not easy to get people to finance a sequel to a show that bomba'd.
They're doing this entirely out of love for the franchise, because there is little money to be made with E7 related things unfortunately
Yeah well pretty much everything good that Bones makes is a bomba in sales. They need Microsoft 500 million marketing campaigns.

This was a very well done episode. The color palette in particular is striking even if it feels a little oversaturated. They nailed the trapar waves visually. Another small thing was the text used on the screens in-show as it's close in style to the original series. Transitions were handled relatively well. Pacing was a little on the slow side but that is more than adequate for an introductory episode in addition to the fact that this is a 24 episode series. Music is pretty good but a bit more orchestral than I would have liked. They are still using synths though which is a good thing. Two pieces that I found particularly good was the opening one and the one that played when the first Scub Burst happened. The use of the violins in that second piece was extremely well done and added to the urgency of the scene. I did enjoy the ambient sounds especially in the forest. It helps to make the island feel more alive. The character designs are pretty solid and you can tell Yoshida's godly hand worked on them.
One thing I was particularly impressed by was how the weight of objects was represented. For example the way the Coral impacted the island gave a sense of the weight of the object. It helped to give a sense of scale and physics. This will probably be important in the mech episodes. I was also impressed with the tone of the show. There's a more serious tone to it compared to the earlier episodes of E7. I mean the way the truck was crushed was pretty brutal and the whole emergency of the situation like seeing the firetrucks gave a sense of the world. In fact the small details really added up in the show to help with the worldbuilding.
As for the characters, I like Ao. He has more fire compared to Renton earlier in the series. He seems angrier in general compared to Renton who was more depressed after his sister left while Ao looks more pissed about the entire situation. The grandfather seems more calm compared to Axel. Naru definitely has more fire compared to Eureka and is certainly closer to Talho in regards to personality(and the way she dresses too hoho). Gazelle surprised me as he seems more insightful compared to his manga counterpart and just more insightful than what his general appearance would give away.
Now here's the current issue I have, there's a lot that just flat out doesn't make sense. Either the plot did a massive time skip backwards or we're in an alternate universe. Both means the plot is going to get messy. I'm also not exactly sure where the plot is going such as if Ao is going to stay and guard Okinawa but the difference here compared to the manga seems to be that due to the glimpses of the world, I can't imagine the plot staying on Okinawa for long. I also wonder if it's going to tackle corporate greed/corruption in the same way the original tackled government/military corruption.

Yeah, I'm not going to hold out hope in having a clean connection to the first. Japan seems to hate standard sequels and tries to complicate it as much as possible to add the "gotta keep watching mystery". It usually ends up messy, like you said.
