Even Bendis is Confused By Peter's Best Friend in Spider-Man: Homecoming

Eh, I don't know about "changed completely" he's still going to be a bit of a dick/bully. He won't be physically harassing Peter, but he's going to be depicted as, in Tom Holland's words: "a rich, smug kid commenting on how bad his[Peter's] trainers were."
Making Flash not a jock is fundamentally altering him.

I spent my teenage years in Queens.

It's fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine.

because Miles isn't Peter.

I am gonna be interested to see how Sony adapts Miles's mess of a backstory now. Is his universe gonna be transplanted or some shit? mother dead and then not dead.

That is fundamentally changing the character.

It fits the spirit of the character. This is a different universe that gets to do a different take on these characters. Do people get this angry when another universe in the comics, like the Ultimate universe, changes these characters up? In my opinion, part of the fun of these long-running superhero characters is getting to see how differently they can be interpreted by different writers and different teams, to see different takes on the material. They've made 5 Spider-Man movies already, they can't try to do a few of their own things for the 6th one?

I have expressed this sentiment over here numerous times but I prefer them keeping changes to the minimum when adapting something to another medium. Sometimes changes are unavoidable. But then there are wholesale changes which fundamentally alter something.

What? 'Ned Leeds'? That's... a weird piece of character doubling up.

Not really. All the comic book movies, especially before this whole cinematic universe thing, made seemingly important characters randomly mixed up and thrown in the background of a lot of the films. Ned getting turned into Peter's friend is weird, but this film is apparently turning Liz into Peter's love interest so it's not like they're all that focused (or ever have been) on keeping characters true to their comics roots.

I hadn't really considered that HS Peter Parker basically has no friends, though, and even later on Harry is really one of the few male characters he hangs out with. In the movies it hasn't really mattered as they transplanted college-age Parker stories back and quickly skipped high school for the most part.

The extended school cast feels incredibly forced and without even a hint of nuance. Reeks of Sony moreso than Marvel.

As someone that used to live in Queens that's almost a direct representation of my childhood friends.

Flash's real name is Eugene. He's got the "Flash" nickname because he's a sports star.

Removing that aspect from him is utterly bizarre.

"Queens in 201X" was pretty specifically a Miles thing on top of Ganke himself. Straight up jacking his setting and sidekick pretty much says they don't think Miles is happening at any point in the next decade.

It wasn't happening when they cast Tom Holland. On an infinite timescale where they keep the MCU canon intact instead of rebooting I could easily see them throwing in Miles to replace Peter Parker, but if he's not in the tranche of characters to replace Downey Jr. and co it's going to be a wait.

EDIT: Also just because it keeps getting quoted, Entertainment Weekly covers and shoots are trash, so using that as a basis of any movie feel is weird. Remember when they photoshopped Zachary Quinto to look like a glam barbie?

After seeing that whole "Who created Caitlin Snow" fiasco, I wonder if these decisions are made purely on working around creator equity participation.

I know Marvel are notoriously stingy with their payments; Jim Starlin recently said he got a lot more more money from KGBeast appearing in BvS than he got from all of Thanos, Drax & Gamora's appearances in the MCU.

Might have changed now Perlmutter's not in charge though.

This is a good question, as Marvel hasn't actually bothered to explain how the Universe 8 Miles Morales' backstory even happened.

Until we know who Abraham Attah is playing in Homecoming, he's probably some water downed version of Miles for the MCU. Glover is for sure playing some version of Prowler, right?

We won't get to enjoy proper Miles Spidey until his animated feature, so at least we have that to look forward to

Why couldn't this movie be about Miles in the first place?

Why would we? In general, Mile's is a boring character. The movies would just end up borrowing Peter's villians, characters, etc. probably.

And how are you gonna have Miles without a Peter? Peter inspired him.

considering the OP, this would be ironic.

Just gonna say even with the dogpile there's not enough calling out this post as completely shit

I'm interested to see what they are doing with Miles in this movie.

I wonder if maybe they are gonna eventually do a thing where Miles stays in the MCU and Peter goes back to Sony at the end of the current deal between Sony/Disney.

I don't think they're going to do anything with Miles since this Peter seems to be a mix of the two. I get the feeling they really wanted to do Miles in the first place but either Sony or Marvel mandated Peter. So we basically end up with neither character being done justice.

Realistically, with all the suits that produce these films, there was never a real chance that Miles Morales black ass was going to be Spider-Man in these films.

I hate to be like this, be we really are lucky we're getting a theatrically released animated film featuring Miles as Spider-Man. Millions of children & adults will be wowed just from seeing a black kid as Spider-Man in that film & it's commercials on TV.

Got to tip your hat to Bendis for even creating the character

Have you been to a NYC school, especially in queens?

I really don't know how that seems forced

I know I'm not the first person to comment on this post, but can I just ask you what you mean when you reference the supporting cast as not seeming to have "a hint of nuance"? What does that even mean? And perhaps more importantly, how do you feel you can sensibly come to that conclusion without basically seeing anything of the supporting cast in action in the actual film?

"This movie has forced diversity" said the man talking about a film set in Queens, NY as he typed from Davenport, Iowa.

Is dude really from Iowa? Cause seriously, people with that kind of opinion & experience are the reason why producers usually cast white for all roles unless race is directly specified

Word to Tim Burton

Born and raised in queens, bruh this is a real representation. Throw in a Indian kid and it really hits home for me.

I take it you've read the comics. Ganke is literally one of the few things Miles has going for him. Why Marvel/Sony basically copied him, I don't know. Peter's universe has so many more choices, it makes no sense.

But my point is, his books have been boring, at least compared to Parker. Peter has more characters, more villains, more history to borrow from.

Besides, in this movie we get to see an actual high school Peter. Something the previous Spiderman films didn't really touch on. I mean, they were in high school, but it seemed like a pretty small part.

And if Sony aren't idiots and let Marvel lead the franchise, we might see Miles in the MCU in 10 or so years, which sounds good to me. This way the character can come about naturally, and hopefully his comic books can weave better stories for the films to adapt.

Que? Forced how? And please don't say that the racial diversity in this film is forced.

I do *kinda* get it, it feels a little focus groupy in the sense that it's like they went down a checklist like "okay so we have: 1 Asian kid, 1 Latin girl, 1 black girl, 1 person of middle eastern descent, and then the white guy."

It's never any more or less, idk. Friend groups are generally a little more random and don't conveniently have one representative of "each race" lol

Or they do. There are no rules to who your friends are and their background..LOL

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.

Sounds about right.

Your only exposure to new york is Girls and Friends right?

I'll say a ninja turtles game.

How the hell can you make this claim unless you explicitly know every single human being that's ever belong to a group of friends

My posse in middle school was basically me (Pakistani), a kid from Mexico, a mixed kid from San Francisco, a white guy and an Asian guy. And I was in the suburbs outside Atlanta. Everyone is different and this is just how they've chosen to represent Peter's group because Queens is a diverse place.

I just don't understand the benefit of using one characters name but using the characterization of another character.

Not that anyone cares about comic book Ned Leeds, but it's just such an odd decision.

To be pedantic, unless my google fu is wrong none of them are middle eastern or Latin. also Tony aka Flash is Guatemalan

That's what I'm missing. Why does it seem like people think one is in short order(other than the cartoon). This is spider-man for probably then next 8 years(assuming it and it's sequales do well).

I doubt most kids are reading Entertainment Weekly anyway and they have complete control over their cover shoots. The reference is definitely the wrong choice but EW is always bad with their covers.
