The US, Russia and China will never accept an even playing field.

It's doubtfull the other members of the security council would either.

There's no doubt the UN is toothless in many ways and needs reform. But there's limits to how powerful a UN can be.

I know it will never happen. My point was that people should stop pretending that the UN does anything useful for third world countries or regional conflicts.

Ideally, the UN would be a neutral world police, instead of the US occupying that role (and the US largely uses that role for self-interest at the expense of millions of lives).

Make no mistake: the Kurds saw an opportunity (a destabilized Syria/Iraq) and seized it - they have their own agenda. They're taking all the land that they can, often at the expense of smaller and weaker minority groups.

None of those countries should be on the security council, in fact, there shouldn't be a permanent security council at all, it should be rotational.

U.S, France, UK, Russia, and China all have the ability to veto too, which is fucking bullshit, because as we have seen all of them repeatedly use it in their own self interest, U.S, Russia, and China being the main culprits.

The structure of the security council is not applicable to the geopolitics of today, a lot of attempts of reform have been put forward but nothing has happened yet.

It's unfortunate that it isn't spoken about more, it's ridiculous that there are permanent members with veto power over UN resolutions/decisions.

The veto capability only exists because those members refused to play ball when it was founded in the first place. Outside of the current irrelevance of the UK and France not much has really changed as the US, China and Russia would simply refuse to play ball if any changes were seriously pursued.

The system is working as intended, at least for the permanent members.

Syria FUBAR as has been obvious for a while. Depressing.

Also depressing is reminder of how toothless UN and idea of a global mandate it and how US, Russia, China, UK, etc all remain essentially focused on self interest.

I have no doubt we'll eventually have a sensible global mandate and governing body that can act quickly and decisively early on in crisis situations like Syria but it's clearly a long, long way off.

The UN really needs serious reform that strips away the permanent positions of the security council and remove the single-vote veto, it's a damn farce at this point. Sadly, nobody on the SC wants to give up their power over the UN.

It's actually number two, right after claiming the Russian minority is being oppressed.

"<Nationality> minority is being oppressed in <insert country here>" is the #1 tool of any fascist regime encroaching on another country's sovereignty, most notable examples being the Nazi invasions of Australia, Czechoslovakia, Poland and other countries, resulting in WW2. Any country using that excuse should be looked upon with extreme suspicion.

We can at least finally put the myth of the " moderate " opposition to rest. The woman who probably knows more than anyone about the atrocities in Syria pretty much confirmed that the opposition is now just a bunch of radicals who are just as bad than the syrian regime.

About the human rights council it's always been a joke. The US, Russia and China have turned the whole thing into a joke.
