.....OK.
I never played Vanquish. So I wouldn't know.
Megatexturing for a game with environments which are as small as those in this game seems strange to me.
People should bear in mind these are not minimum requirements, they're reccomendational. Plus it's a game which is on the consoles. I can't imagine why it would require 4GB of graphics memory.
4 gigs of video card memory is both impressive and WTF at the same time.

Gamasutra said:He added that id Tech 5 is "not magic," and the engine is good for certain kinds of games such as Rage, but not as much for games such as Grand Theft Auto that render cities with lots of surface area.
"The megatexture direction [in id Tech 5] has some big wins, but it's also fairly restrictive on certain types of games," [Carmack] said. "It would be a completely unacceptable engine to do [Bethesda's Elder Scrolls V:] Skyrim in, where you've got the whole world, walking across these huge areas."
I knew people who insisted that you wouldn't need more than 2 GB of VRAM for 1080p were nuts.
It's the models, shadow maps, textures, light maps, and everything else that takes up the space, not just the frame buffer.
The reason you never needed more two years ago was that everything was designed for Xbox 360 and PS3.
I don't think they are "crazy high". I mean, it's not minimum, it's recommended, and a 670 is a 2.5 year old mid-range card. Those recommended specs seem crazy high for a game that looks like Evil Within visually.
Their statement is "Note: We do not have a list of minimum requirements for the game. If youre trying to play with a rig with settings below these requirements (you should plan to have 4 GBs of VRAM regardless), we cannot guarantee optimal performance."
Don't look at me, I told people 2GB and 3GB cards were dead in the water when the 7XX's were still just a rumor. I also told people 4GB isn't going to last the whole gen either. People don't like hearing these truths.
You might not stutter but enjoy the terrible AMD idtech 5 performance![]()
This game must not use texture streaming AT ALL or something. Seriously, wtf is this game doing that they have a statement like that?
Does that mean texturing will be top notch? Allow me to be skeptical.
LOL at this ugly ass game needing 4GB of VRAM.
Wolfenstein was a great port on the PS4/XBO despite its PC requirements. It also ran at 1080p (dynamic res) and 60 fps. I expect Evil Within to maintain 1080p without the dynamic res at 30 fps.Is the game still 1920x800 and 30fps on PS4/XBO?
Optimal performance ? I'm really wondering what they mean by this... I'm so happy I'm gone with a 4GB R9 290 instead of a 3GB 780GTX.

Anyway, I'm happy I got a 770 4GB. Going against some pretty loud-voiced detractors![]()
Yeah, I played the crap out of Wolf on PS4. I was just hoping this may wind up being 60fps on next gen since it's idTech 5. Haven't followed the game too closely.Wolfenstein was a great port on the PS4/XBO despite its PC requirements. It also ran at 1080p (dynamic res) and 60 fps. Again, Rage is one of the only games that benefitted from more than 2 gigs of vram, but that just meant less texture popping in certain environments. That's sort of the whole thing about idTech 5. It can use however much vram you throw at it.
More is better, but performance isn't going to be remotely hurt by less. It'll just effect texture quality on distant things open areas.
More is recommended, but far from needed.
edit: Just saw Nirolak's post.
Yikes.
Glad I'll have a GTX980 before the end of the day...
Those PC specs are freaking insane. I assume/hope they're for max settings.
LOL at this ugly ass game needing 4GB of VRAM.
Well actually according to Carmack, large open environments would work poorly in idtech5 because you'd have to load in too many textures at once.

Yeah. The whole "you don't need more than 2GB for 1080p" thing was always suspect. There were definitely people insisting that we'd need more VRAM too, which made sense given what was expected out of the next consoles.

LOL at this shitposter thinking it's an ugly ass game.
It has great art but it's pretty rough technically, as is the case for most idTech 5 games.
Yeah, I bought my 2GB 670 with high recommendation from the -I need a new PC Thread-, saying that 2GB would be enough. Now it seems like a lot of games are coming with 4GB requirements. I wager COD: AW will as well.
DAMMIT.
Huh? I'm not even saying anything about older games, I'm talking about over the next year or 2. I think we're going to see a big explosion of VRAM (and normal RAM) usage over the next 2 years. 4GB VRAM will be absolutely necessary in another year, IMO.

You so got me. I'm hurt and must cry.
