Expos NEW NAME pretty much REVEALED, but could new stadium site DELAY the move?

WASHINGTON -- The transplanted Expos might soon have a new name, though it's really an old name and probably not the one you think.

Because of the pressure to sell tickets, merchandise and sponsorships before the franchise is sold, Major League Baseball is expected to rename the Expos within the next two weeks, according to the Washington Times.

Though the team that left Washington for Texas after the 1971 season was officially named the Senators, for most of its history the team in the Nation's Capital was more often known as or familiarly referred to as the Nationals.

And, Nationals the new team apparently will be, fittingly because whereas the former Nats were "first in war, first in peace and last in the American League," the new Nationals will be in the National League.

Sources told the Times that Nationals is a near lock, ahead of Grays, historical name of the Negro League team in Washington, and Senators, following a process that involved focus groups, marketing executives and polling data.

However, baseball spokesman Rich Levin said reports that the Expos would be renamed the Nationals were premature. Levin said other names, such as the Senators, remain under consideration and that baseball still was conducting focus groups.

"We're about 10-15 days from having this done," team president Tony Tavares told the newspaper. "We're getting real close."

The team logo and uniform designs also are nearing completion, sources told the Times. Team colors will be red, white and blue, of course, although there's no indication which will be the primary color.

The clear aim is to put caps, shirts and other merchandise on sale for holiday shopping, which begins in less than three weeks.

... Awesome! I was rooting for Nationals since day one and I can't wait to see the awesome unis and caps MLB cooks up for us.

The next article is that the chair of the D.C. Council has recommended that the proposed stadium site be moved adjacent to RFK. To tell you the truth, this isn't going to stop the Expos from moving, contrary to what Mayor Williams is squealing about, and I think RFK is easier for us commuters than Anacostia. What this comes down to is land development and business going into the area because of the proposed stadium site and Williams isn't worried about losing the team, but support from local businesses...

WASHINGTON -- The chair of the District of Columbia Council proposed Friday that a new ballpark be built next to RFK Stadium instead of a site south of the U.S. Capitol, a plan that could cause Major League Baseball to drop the scheduled move of the Montreal Expos to Washington.

Council chairwoman Linda Cropp made the proposal to cut costs for the new ballpark, which she estimates would be $600 million on the original site, far above the estimate in the $435 million deal Mayor Anthony A. Williams signed in September.

"The costs are going up so high that I believe it will have a negative effect on our business community," Cropp said. "By moving to RFK Stadium, we have an automatic 20 percent reduction in cost."

Washington's contract with the Expos calls for funding for a ballpark at the original site to be approved by Dec. 31. Cropp said there would be an $83 million savings in land acquisition under her plan.

"This is going to blow the thing up," said a livid Williams, warning it could undo 30 years worth of efforts to get the city a team to replace the expansion Washington Senators, who became the Texas Rangers after the 1971 season.

Cropp said she is willing to risk losing the Expos if baseball owners refuse to accept the RFK location.

"I would hope that baseball would be extremely reasonable," Cropp said.

Washington's contract with the Expos does not allow for a change in the stadium site without the team's approval.

"We have an agreement with the mayor whereby he has until the 31st of December to obtain passage of the legislation effectuating the stadium agreement," said John McHale Jr., an executive vice president in the commissioner's office who has been involved in planning the move. "Until that time comes, we're not going to get excited."

Cropp's ballpark plan is supported by Council members Carol Schwartz, David Catania and Phil Mendelson. There are 13 members of the Council, and seven must approve a financing plan.

"I said I'm not getting involved in the local politics," Expos president Tony Tavares said. "I have no opinion about any of that stuff. I'm ignoring it all. I'm just concentrating on launching the team here."

Cropp has discussed her proposal with officials from the Greater Washington Board of Trade, the D.C. Restaurant Association and the D.C. Chamber of Commerce, and said business leaders have signaled their support for any plan that allows for future business development -- especially if it trims costs.

Williams plans to speak to residents Monday night on the city's cable television station, hoping to win support. Williams will offer the opposition equal time.

The ballpark proposal has drawn intense criticism from many city residents, who prefer to focus on schools rather than a ballpark. Three Council members who supported Williams' plan were ousted in September's Democratic primary by foes -- including former Mayor Marion Barry, who last week criticized the deal at a council hearing.

"Why should we subsidize these millionaires?" Barry said, this week following his general election victory.

First tragedy, then farce.
I was hoping for the Grays. I think it would be a really fitting tribute to a great team from the past that is often forgotten and overlooked.

I support the Negro League as much as the next guy, but the Washington Grays is a horrible team name and if their uniforms would look stupid. They'd have to be gray and gray uniforms are ugly. And if they were colored, they'd clash with the name!

Nationals is where it's at.

The Washington Nationals were also the only Washington baseball team to win a World Series.

I agree, Grays would not be a very good name. At least Washington should be able to pull in the kind of funding to be at least competitive in MLB.

Definitely. The front runner would be Fred Malek's group and he'd be a great owner.

The dark horse in the running now? Dan Snyder. He'd be a fantastic baseball owner.

Either the two of you are retarded or trying to be funny (maybe both), but in case you didn't know, Washington D.C. is like 99% black people.

I think it was a joke that the redskins exist in a city with virtually no native americans. Plus, the fact that its a racist name.

Nationals is racist?

Who are in these focus groups? Baseball fans or the general public? I would have thouight Senators would be the front runner considering the history. I didn't realize the Nationals had any basis in major league history. When did the Nationals offically become the Senators? (assuming it's the same team). As for the Grays, they don't have any major league history (though not their fault, though if blacks were in the major leagues at the time, they would have been with the major league teams at the time, not the Grays) and hardly anyone knows of them, so I don't think they will or should be the name of the team.

including former Mayor Marion Barry, who last week criticized the deal at a council hearing.
Worst news of the two articles. :p

I believe they were the Senators, then the Nationals, then the Senators again. Nationals are pretty well-known around here, and again, the only Washington-named team to win a World Series.

The focus groups are made up of many demographics. The Grays were pretty much ranked second or behind the Nationals in most polls, but I knew the Grays would never happen, because nobody outside of D.C. likes that name in the slightest and it's people from Prince George's, Montgomery and Northern Virginia that'll really be supporting the team.

Grays is just an awful name, but I think it'd be cool to include some kind of local baseball musuem or monument commemorating the Grays and the Senators.

Worst news of the two articles. :p

Why? Because he's back in politics? Nothing is going to stop the Expos from moving, and I find it doubtful that the switch in development sites will happen.

Nationals sounds dumb, Senators sounds pretty retarded.. Grays sounds .. well, not bad, but still kinda lame... Expos actually sounds better than all 3, but not by much...

the nationals is dumb. Its made worse by the fact that they play in the NATIONAL league. What's next? The Los Angeles Majors? Senators would have been much better. Grays, not so much. Worst new sports team name since the Texans.

Gonna have to agree. Stupid name.

Who picks these things? Isn't there a basketball team coming into the NBA called the Badgers or something?

Badgers is a great name! Badgers are so fierece, I'd rather get into a tussle with an African bull elephant than with a badger!

The new NBA team is the Bobcats, not the Badgers.

And FUCK THE HATERS. Nationals is a great name, it's been than Grays and has more positive memories than Senators. I'm glad they went into their past and took the better name!

... Plus, we would've had to pay the Rangers for the name Senators.

I was hoping for Federals. You could shorten it to Feds, which is really cool.

And Dan Snyder? I've already suffered through Deion once, thankyouverymuch.

Dan Snyder would be a great owner and you know it. Dan likes to buy individual players and mish mash them into a Pro Bowl team of awesomeness. Except that doesn't work in football.

Baseball is a team sport, but it's much more reliant on individual talent. It's why the Yankees are the Yankees, the Red Sox are the Red Sox, etc.

Dan Snyer is a big name-obsessed ninny who still doesn't have a GM for the Redskins. Overspending is more possible in baseball than it is in football, but it's only a viable option if you're the Yankees, and can outspend everyone else by at least half.

Remember Baltimore in 98? Highest payroll in the league, 79 wins. The Mets, Rangers, and Dodgers last year? You want another Albert Belle/Mike Hampton/Mo Vaugh/Alex Rodriguez situation?

Yeah, some cash helps, but how much more would Snyder spend per year than another owner with this market? And would it be worth all the interference by someone who doesn't know what he's doing?
