facebook got a huge facelift...

I really really hate the update too. Granted I don't use facebook more than once or twice a day but before I would just hit all stories or whatever and everything would be sorted by time.

What they have now is a giant fucking mess that makes no sense at all. I don't know what they were thinking when they thought this was a good idea.

I don't mind the update in of itself, I do mind having updates (eg ticker) repeatedly rolled out and taken away and rolled back out again over the course of a short period of time. Test these things internally.

Plus there are a bunch of design bugs that should not be there.

Personally, I don't mind the feature update at all. I think Facebook incorporated a lot of things that people praised Google+ for when it came out (more control of feeds, privacy, more ways to interact with friends depending on close you are to them, etc...), but of course every service has its group of old misers who balk at any type of change.

I remember when Facebook had it's first major face-lift, and everyone complained about it. Now, looking back at what Facebook used to look like, it looks so archaic. Hard to believe that anyone would want to go back to Facebook 1.0 now. A lot of things just take getting used to, and in reality Facebook has added more features than it has taken away with this update.

If I had one criticism - and yeah, it's a big one - it's that all the recent updates have been feature updates. Now I think it's time for Facebook to clean things up with a design update. Because I appreciate all this extra functionality...but I have to agree that it does make Facebook look like a cluttered, borderline unreadable mess just being splashed on the page like it currently is.

This layout clearly wasn't designed to support all of this functionality and still be clean and readible. I've thought that for last few updates. I wonder Facebook is so dead-set on keeping it.

Hahaha, they're just ripping stuff out of Google+ and implementing it.

Even the top bar and the 'view profile as...' option.

And this new stuff is also just weird. Honestly, I don't get why they're suddenly making this weird changes with their feeds. Also, the 'read', 'watched' etc buttons... wtf?

And why the fuck are these updates not optional?

When developing a website you can't archive a bunch of old versions of the site for people that don't like change to go back to. It makes it impossible to develop any features going forward.

That said, at least having the ticker at least be hideable doesn't seem like would be that difficult, especially when you consider that it already separates itself from the rest of the page.

They're overloading it with way too much stuff. I think the herp derp brigade that make up the vast majority of Facebook's user base are going to be very confused.

I... really don't understand the fuss. It's mildly different from how it was before. You get real-time updates in the top right and "most recent" has been combined with "top news" by denoting top news with a blue tab. Anyone who suddenly can't figure it out is Darwinism at work.

I hate it. I don't want Facebook deciding what my "Top News" is, because it's always wrong. I want all the updates in a clean most-recent-first timeline, like before.

Fuck it, I'll just stick with Twitter. It was already better before today anyway.

The top news isn't really prominant and can get mixed in or even disappear. It's the way the content is delivered to you and how it changes or makes itself known is the problem. Before it was pretty blunt, you clicked on Top News, you got the Top News. You clicked on Recent News you got the Recent News.

In the past 12 hours of using it, I've gone from

Top News
Recent News

to

Recent News
Top News
Recent News

to

Recent News

That's confusing why that content is changing and mixed up and no way to see just the linear history is a problem.

On top of that, I think the whole sidebar that you can't hide or remove really makes the whole visual design cluttered and on top of that having a news ticker on top of your news feed also seems confusing to why there are two.

It was simple before.

Why can I no longer have the option to switch between Top Posts and Most Recent? Why combine them when they're perfectly usable as separate pages? Now I have to scroll down past the Top Stories to get to Most Recent.

The ticker is a good idea, except I have no interest in it, so why can I not just disable it? Also, why do Pokes from other people no longer show anywhere any more? I've been having a poke battle with a friend for nearly a year now and now I can't tell when I've been poked any more.

Can't they just have all these different elements as check boxes and let you drag them around the screen and add/remove them in an edit mode or something?

Where's everyone's ticker at? Mine's on top of the chat bar - is there a way to move it? I have so much empty, wasted space because of my screen - and have had a lot ever since they made the text smaller like a year ago.

Today I discovered that apparently there's "Leet Speak" under language selection.... now my facebook is filled with leetspeak and it's blowing my mind XD

Oh, and what brought that up is that apparently if you change it from English(US) to English(UK), it brings back the old layout. But pretty sure it's just a temp fix before FB finish rolling out this bag of fail

There's too much information appearing on the ticker. I mean I get news about my friends liking pictures of people who I don't have friends or follow in any way.

What's the deal with that? I assume the same kind of info will appear on the ticker of my friends about me?

People that don't like the changes. Try out the addon http://betterfacebook.net/

I've been using it it for a couple weeks and it's great.

That looks even more cluttered and disorganized (folders upon folders) than Facebook already is.

And the only reason I like the ticker so far is because if you hover over it/click it, it immediately shows you the post they're talking about... which makes commenting/liking shit so much easier. Hopefully, it'll help me cut down on the number of FB tabs I keep open at one time.

Its funny how just because its free means people cant have an opinion on it. Usually when you have a product and 9 out of 10 times you update it people arent happy, you should probably work on that.

Its a terrible update, you cant filter newest updates, you cant see if you are tagged on your wall you have to go to their wall. its just stupid.

And shut the fuck up about people complaining about it, people are allowed to have an opinion

Except people always bitch about Facebook updates. They bitched with the news feed, they bitched about the like button, they bitched about fb chat, they bitched about when the fucking FONT changed by one point, and yet more people are using it than ever. So it's just as important to remember that people are hyper-sensetive about something absurdly trivial (especially when the majority of these changes have already been slowly implemented over the past couple months)

Um I'm pretty sure more people today are complaining about this news feed update than the fb chat, font and like buttons COMBINED.

more people are using it because there is no other choice

I seriously can't understand how anyone could find this update confusing in any way. You even get a tutorial when you open the page for the first time after the update saying like "Hey top news is AT THE TOP, news feed (timeline) is below." Really, how is that confusing or hard to understand? Furthermore, what is the deal with the constant bitching about Facebook updates? "Gee, when has Facebook ever done anything right, right? They're like, destroying the site with everything they do." seems to be the consensus every time something is changed, and a few weeks later people figure out that "yeah this is kinda neat", or it just blends in to the point where you don't even think about it anymore. I can't think of a single Facebook update that actually has caused inconvenience (member since late 2008) at all except for separating top stories and news feed (which I mention below). Thankfully this has been remedied.

With that out of the way, I really like the update. Separating top stories and news feed wasn't a very good idea to begin with, and now that they've been placed together again I'm quite content.

Because top news isn't always at the top?

And they should be separate because I don't really care that 20 people like chimichangas statuses.

I don't find it confusing at all. I just think it's a shitty change because I don't want my feed to have a separate "Top News" section. I want the option to only see everything chronologically.

Hollllld on!

Ok, someone please do this test, as I hope it's just Safari being weird.

BUt if you use the adjustable bar on the side bar to make your ticker bigger, does that cut off your friends list for the chat, and does it make it unscrollable, so you only see one person if you move the adjuster all the way to the bottom?

Explain to me why Recent News would be in the list twice?

I think the feeds are a little wonky due to the transition, but in general my feed is becoming chronological now more or less, so it's possible that some of the complaints are fixed. but I still don't understand the distinction between Recent News and From Earlier.

you can edit it to the way you want. There is no static experience.

I just installed it and it's great. Super minimalist, just a few features that recently got added that can't be removed as of right now. I'll post a pic in a bit.

I've never really had any problems with any of the past facebook updates but this latest shit is ridiculous, it feels like it was implemented for people with hardcore ADD and its a giant mess with mixing the most recent, and top stories. Son I Am Disappoint.
