Facebook is apparently getting DDOSed

You may have noticed Facebook is down (and with it oculus, whatsapp, and insta). Apparently it's a cyber attack and some are speculating the attack is a response to a whistleblower who was interviewed on 60 minutes last night basically saying FB is full of shit.

Important to note that the DDOS attack is a rumored cause- I think an attack against FB would need to be absolutely massive to bring it down like this.

Yeah, and I realized I'm basically cut off from most of my connections unless they use Line.

But I also need it for work, so it's great cause I'm now being paid a fuckton not to do shit and I don't have to feel bad about it.

On the other hand, I might not have a job anymore if they aren't able to bring it back up

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
I heard it wasn’t a DDOS attack, but a bad config pushed down internally. I wish I could provide a link, but that site is down now.

btw, I am watching that interview... she seems like a Karen type to me with that small face. Not saying anything new really. Still blaming corporation for how shitty people just are on social media.

Wait... whatsapp is fb company ?! Why do they need it and messenger

Did wonder myself when it wouldn't connect. Must be some massive DDOS attack to be down this long, I only use messanger.

btw - since when whistleblower is just a company thief ?!
How can she steal and reveal company documents and not go to jail ? What about the contract

She is testifying to congress against Facebook, blaming them for the Capitol riot. She has witness immunity.

it's amazing to me that facebook is trending on twitter and this many people seem to care. How often are people on facebook? I check it like maybe once a day tops, but not enough to even notice it was down

I do not care about facebook, but i care about whatsapp like most of the world outside the usa. At least in europe is the most used way to communicate with others both in a day to day communication and in work relations. More than any other message app including sms.

It kinda sucks hard that after years of searching for a job, when i get to a company that starts a dialogue with me via whatsapp this happens.

edit: Whatsapp uses fb infrastructure and its down too.

This happens at least once per year.

It's cyclical as long as leadership at the top stays the same. Facebook is not just that old platform you used to use and maybe your old relatives still do. Instagram, Whatsapp, Oculus are owned by Facebook.

The "Facebook products are bad for you" news story is nothing new and people continue to use them, so nothing changes. There are alternatives but people suck at putting in a little effort when it comes to changing habits.

It's not about facebook.
It's about messenger. We are all using it here. it's my main way of messaging people. We have groups of friends, coworkers etc

Mr Zuckerberg, I can go onto Myspace right now and post offensive messages or send images about felines eating burgers. Is that a public good?

Senator, we monitor all of our platforms for cat based memery.

Mr Zuckerberg, and whatsapp?

WhatsApp dead for 3 hours, and counting. Theres major logistic issues both in Argentina and Brazil, like food trucks cant coordinate deliveries.
Not sure whats going on, definitely this is not just a typical BGP record screw up like a couple of months ago with Slack. Post mortem of this is going to be super interesting. Pretty sure theres a big, coordinated attack by a nation-state wide actor with huge silent networks operating this.

This is probably going to go down as the most globally productive day in the last 15 years.

So much work getting done around the world. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Maybe some US people is not aware of, but WhatsApp is a major, key part for essential daily basis activities, both private and public in the rest of the world. Police, trucks, public offices for retirees, supermarkets, hospitals among many other depend on it. I can tell you without hesitation that this shutdown has provoked many indirect deaths for sure, and monumental economic losses.

Maybe people should stop being dependant on a single service, then? Especially those not in private sector? It's always good to have options and this goes for everything, including software used to communicate with other people.
