Facebook is apparently getting DDOSed

An important lesson has been learnt, never to rely on one company for your communications needs, without any backup channels in place. There are many alternatives available to WhatsApp: Signal/Telegram/Skype

I guess a developing country has bigger needs than providing several integrations with all the available actors.
Also, its not that easy to make 75+ year persons to swtich between services. Let alone people that didnt finished elemntary school and probably dont even know of Signal or Telegram.

Lol that is a reason why I refused to accept "IT security auditor" position at my company.
It is a SINGLE PERSON position responsible for whole thousand people company IT security.
I feel I know this stuff but not nearly enough... and even if I would, You still get fired for this type of stuff which is not your fault.

So I am still an engineer.....

60 Minutes whistleblower interview. Congress testimony. No one can enter the building. Scrubbing servers? False. You can't use soap to scrub servers.

Nintendo eShop went offline, Facebook to buy Nintendo confirmed. Amazon "smiley face" Box to be revealed as the final smash character tonight.

I fired up Virtual Desktop just fine

I was playing VR chat and now I'm stuck in the game, we killed a Furry in the game and they died in real life too. We're currently forming a group to stay safe in the Pug Inn, but someone thinks they spotted a small red thing outside with a knife asking for the way in.. just need to hold out for the Facebook servers to come back on.

If it is just the routing servers then the data and their backups are fine but all we know from the outside so far is that the routing servers are gone and the Facebook buildings digital cards aren’t working. That says to me that something in the inside is worse than just the routing servers. If it’s just the routing servers they would have fixed it already. They have many redundant backups of the data though so I doubt we’ll see any personal loss. That hacking sale thing makes me believe it’s just stirring the pot the amount of data for 1.5 billion people is no small thing.

You may have noticed Facebook is down (and with it oculus, whatsapp, and insta). Apparently it's a cyber attack and some are speculating the attack is a response to a whistleblower who was interviewed on 60 minutes last night basically saying FB is full of shit.

Important to note that the DDOS attack is a rumored cause- I think an attack against FB would need to be absolutely massive to bring it down like this.
I don't think its a DDOS based on what I'm reading.

Everyone here (Brazil at least) has a backup on Telegram etc. It already happened before here and that's not the problem.

I believe that something like this is good just as eye opener for some, specially the newer generations, that the "cloud" is in fact on someone else hardware and that you are not the owner of your social network.

DNS servers are not stored on location are they?
Even if, restoring list of DNS IPs redirects is a text file

Nothing wrong with being an engineer my man. I am happy being a security engineer for the rest of my days, way worse jobs you could do. I agree we need to stop this victim blaming and having singular people from organisations take responsibility for breaches. If a big or bad enough APT group wants to take you down….they will. We are always fighting a losing battle.

On the one hand getting no messages from customers for a day has been kinda relaxing.
On the other hand as a small business this sucks because Instagram and Whatsapp are basically the main ways to talk to your customers.

Not shitting on your parade friend but why would you rely on a third party app for your emergency services with no contingencies?
The problem is WhatsApp here in the country is pretty much the default communication app for business and personal. A couple years back people used to ask if you have WhatsApp or not. Now they just assume you have because most likely you do.

Wait, so it’s gone gone!?
I don't think "gone" means that all your personal data is deleted. I think he means that there's no easy way to access said data. Apparently someone has to physically access the relevant hardware and reprogram (or restore) whatever was lost.
