Erdogan seeking asylum? How much of that is true?

If he truly asked the Turks to stand up against the coup and they are going to listen we might witness something horrendous.

We're already witnessing something horrendous. A coup against the Turkish citizens that have democratically chosen Erdogan. Our way of live and values shouldn't affect nor forced upon the rest of the world.

People are way too quick in cheering this coup. Erdogan is horrible but I doubt the military are going to be completely benevolent. Turkey is a volatile and divided country. This will be very rough for all involved.

Yup. Those fapping on the word 'secular' seem quite naive.

It's fucking insane what GAF is doing right now. Laughing off an illegal coup just because their views don't line up with Erdogan's? He was chosen for fuck sake, not everyone of us agrees with it, but apparently the (majority of the) people of Turkey do, and that's more than enough. This can and probably will have massive consequences, but it seems GAF really just want Erdogan out without thinking about everything else.

elected despotic strongmen are still despotic strongmen

a plurality of votes does not grant any moral authority to a political leader

Wow.. If true... Seriously, just call for new elections and allow the current government govern for the next 6 months or so, but place some clauses so a coup like situation doesn't occur.

In my opinion, the military has no right regardless to take power. The military is the largest problem in the Muslim world where it abuses it power many times over for various reasons. :|

democracy.... The power and the will of the people over the rule of the military.

The Turkish military does have that right under their constitution. It's that mustached tyrant that doesn't have any rights to spit on secularism and tear down the constitution.

One more time.

He was trying to dismantle democracy to stay in power. Imagine a president trying to dismantle congress. Jesus fucking christ, can all you knee-jerking Nana Ruths educate yourself on this before posting about democracy?

Apparently the majority of the voters were okay with those choices, otherwise we would have seen a protest or whatever on a massive (e.g. millions) scale. Instead we get the army barging in. Did they consult the people? Did they conduct an expansive research about it? Ironically GAF seems to applaud non-democratic means to topple a state of head they don't agree with.

Democracy in Turkey right now doesn't mean what you think it means. Even elections don't mean what you think they mean. https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Elector...uring_the_Turkish_general_election,_June_2015

He eroded freedom of press, freedom of religion and imprisoned his opponents without charges. He is a fascist autocrat.

Also you are ignorant in general because this coup is actually legal, it's motivated by one of the primary items of the constitution.

The power of the military to hit the reset button is baked into their constitution. It's not illegal.

It doesn't matter if someone was democratically elected if the person later tries to dismantle democracy and become a tyrant.

Stop making excuses for Erdogan.

Democracy is not a suicide pact.

You realize this is bullshit right? And the fact that he was trying to erode democracy, means that he is no longer democratic? You can just say "Oh I didn't know that." This happens often in Turkey, Turkey has a history of coups. The military has a legal right to do so as well. So you're wrong on that front as well.

People are cheering in the streets. Please, stop posting. Google first, then come back and we can continue with some sort of substance, besides what you think because of invalid reasons.

Do you not understand what he was doing?

He wasn't just a bad president, he was eroding checks and balances in the government, he wanted an extreme amount of power.

Stop talking out your ass and at least do some god damn research

The constitution legally allows military coups, so it's not even an illegal act.

CHP backing Erdogan is not good news; they absolutely hate each other and normally I would have expected the CHP to back the army...
It would be unfortunate if this somehow had the effect of strengthening Erdogan (assuming he can even regain power). At the very least, it's likely to further deepen the divisions within Turkish society.

Really hope this can end up being a good thing. Turkey end up sorting itself out and the Kurdish are allowed to make their own country. But that would be hoping for too mich probably.

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
Why is he going to Germany? Sorry I don't follow this stuff so I didn't even know who this Erdogan guy is.

Germany has the largest community of Turks in Europe outside of Turkey. Many are Erdogan supporters.

A democracy is not, and never has been, a dictatorship of the majority.

He's been instituting more laws based on Islamic teachings, which has sharply divided the country along secularist and religious lines.

What kind of laws?

I just did a quick Google search and seemed like he helped the economy and attempted to remove the hijab ban in public institutions. He also treated the media and kurds poorly? Looks like he tried to criminalize adultery and tried to introduce alcohol free zones as well?
