Failed military coup in Turkey; Erdogan promising swift reprisal

I'm surprised the forces behind the coup, who clearly have control of some portion of the air force, just didn't attack his jet on it's way back to Istanbul if they wanted to kill him instead of waiting for him to land.

This is horrifying, I can't bring myself to watch any of this footage. Please stay safe Turkey GAFfers, I really hope something somehow managed to cause this to end and soon.

Military having the upper hand again. This doesn't look something small. Not at all.

"playing" dumb? unpossible
Right. How do they still have jets in the air... if there's no support for the coup. Uhm... nato? This needs your help.

I would imagine the other guys who are claiming to vastly outnumber the coup planners, would establish air superiority. This whole thing makes no sense.

So if the military coup fails, what will happen to the military and those who initiated this? I'd imagine some serious consequences will be enforced.

Guys here, in Turkey nobody is supporting that. Neither Islamic groups, nor political parties. They just took over the CNN Türk's building. It was horrifying to watch. The ancestors face, eyes etc...

It's almost 2 a.m. and mosques across Istanbul are relentlessly calling people to the streets to resist and protest the military coup.

Some of those people were not killed by automatic rifles, they were killed by something closer to anti-tank rifles.

Yeah, makes me wonder which location it likely is, but I'd be inclined to say one of the locations where we've heard a lot of activity.

Fuck this is really horrible man :( Erdogan is a cunt to demand civilians go and stop the coup instead of sending his loyal troops to go do it.
I have to love how you still can't blame the coup and instead blame Ardogan and his supporters for the deaths. Talk about victim blaming.

Seriously how amateur was this coup?

Everyone knows their first target should have been securing state media and news outlets.

They let the whole thing got out of hand when Erdogan did his facetime move inciting his supporters live on CNN.

Thing would have gone more smoothly.

Wasn't well organized enough, didn't secure enough high level leadership.

I don't get why this has ramped up all of a sudden. Can anyone fill me in?

Could have been a feint to lul Ero into a false sense of security and then return home where they planned to either capture or kill him with little chance of him being able to escape. Smart planning by someone if that's the case.

Seeing many graphic photos/videos from Ankara of bodies of people lying on the ground. Don't want to post....

Oh Christ. Sounds like Ankara has turned into a bloodbath.

Yeah, they should have went after him and all the news stations first.

Sadly it seems like this is going to be a Civil War for a period of time now :(

Obviously whoever is running things is going to get executed if they can't take out the current regime, hence the escalation in tactics.

None of this makes sense.

Why would Erdogan land in a hostile area, even with escorts?

If the coup does have some type of air force under control, why are they bombing parliament and government buildings?

Hard to say where actually going on but it's definitely not over.

Seems the situation is still very fluid. While the struggle goes on both sides have an interest in making appear they're winning.

Fuck me. From reading pages 45-55ish it seemed that the rebellion was quelled. But now apparently it's full on again? And Erdogan decided to land in Istanbul(Unconfirmed?). All over the place....

...the thing about social media is, while it amplifies voices to be heard around the world, it also amplifies uncertainty in what is being heard...insane. I really thought the coup failed~
