I hope things don't get too ugly but I'm not overly optimistic. Crazy times.

Stay safe TurkeyGAF
.
Seriously, it can tempting to look outside to figure out what's happening, but with reports of shots being fired please stay away from windows, etc. if you are anywhere nearby the military/police.

Please be careful. Hopefully it'll blow over quickly.

The endless fight between laicism and islamism in Turkey. If the coup doesnt succeed the path to an islamic turkey may be irreversible.

Lets hope Russia isn't backing this as retaliation for the fighter jets being shot down.

Erdogan was trying to be friendly with them AND Syria just a few days ago.

As some other gaffer said, he had to know that something bad was about to happen and he is deeply aware of the fact that he has no friends left.

Supposed to be heading to Turkey in 17 hours. Damn.
Dude. Don't. Seriously, don't. If it's vaccation, don't. If it's work you probably won't be able to do anything anyway.

If this is the mostly the military behind the coup, what force does the out of state PM plan to use against them? Reads like there was/is a police force, that was being unarmed by the military. What other forces?

The hope that there are some loyalists left.

This is exactly how it feels. A small group commandering fighter jets, helicopters, tanks and enough forces to disarm local police and block bridges. Something doesn't add up.

Or it could be the anti-coup forces locking down everything. Plausible for them to disarm the police on the premise that no one but them can be trusted atm.

Turkish governments actions have brought the recent violence. To gain power they fanned the flames of division and showed a total inability to work with the Kurds just as they are at their strongest.

A commonality could have developed instead we got death and violence whilst the government showed great folly fanning the flames of another enemy in Syria who freely turned on them.

Fuck..

If it is a coup, let's hope they remove E and reestablish democracy, like what happened in Honduras. Far from ideal, but these elected leaders with autocratic tendencies are hard to remove through political means when they bribe/dissolve/threaten all other institutions like congress, courts, military.

if this is the military siding with E against the rest of the government.. then fuck.

Has a military coup ever brought positive change? Erdogan is bad but I imagine this will make everything worse.

I could see Russia wanting to stir things up, but the west had/has a pretty cushy deal with Turkey. Hell, they were on the verge of EU membership.

Several decades away and drifting further because of Erdogans policies is not on the verge.

How does a coup happen? Some General goes rogue and everyone in the military follows? Just surprised everyone would disobey the commander in chief like that

Turkey's been doing so much dirt on the sly, though. Assisting ISIS under the table while targeting Kurds, shooting down that Russian fighter plane, etc.

You can only hope that the side that comes out on top is opposed to these things. Otherwise...
