Look at the crowd on CNN... all men.

Have man.. Don't you know the women were everywhere throughout the night leading the TAKBIR chants? Come on now, are you blind?

:lol what a joke.

It's going to take a significant amount of effort, time and energy to undo the Islamist and pro-religious socio cultural platform the AKP has injected into the day to day lives of Turks.

So it finally ended I guess. Thank god...

Navy is pro Erdogan guys

them and the First Divisions and others

if there were reports of Battleships, etc.. likely they were surrounding the guys who were left on the Bridge

This whole thing was so bizarre. So many confusing, contradictory and disorganized actions from the coup organizers.

I'll just post this here as well:

I would say that it was never meant to work out in the first place.

The Turkish military isn't incompetent. They're an exceptionally well trained force. And they have institutional experience with multiple coups in the country's past.

When the Turkish military actually wants to overthrow a government, they know exactly how to do it. They do it swiftly. They shut down communication, they quietly arrest all members of the parliament and the cabinet before a General goes on TV to make the declaration. That's the way it's done without violence and bloodshed. Those of us old enough to remember the 80s will think back on Kenan Evren and remember that his coup successfully ended before anyone even found out there was a coup.

What happened tonight was not a coup. It was a sham. It was Erdogan realizing that he wasn't going to win a referendum for Presidency, and instead engineering an orchestrated fake coup attempt to garner sympathy, so that he can consolidate his power and entrench his dictatorial rule. We watched what little left of the Republic of Turkey die on live TV and social media broadcast tonight. Now we get to watch as Erdogan declares himself the new sultan of Turkey, and uses tonight's events as justification for imprisoning and executing anyone who dares to criticize him. Enjoy!

Wow, just got home from work and missed all of this unfolding. Wish they hadn't blocked the internet at work recently.

Crazy stuff.

That's crazy to me... A modern military army losing to police. At least that's all I've gathered. Haven't been able to read into it aggressively yet.

They messed it up. To be successful you have to have unity from the top chain of command. These were low level officers made up of small groups. Easy for them to quickly take over but they couldn't hold their position. Top leaders were not taken prisoner and held, they were able to control the media for a while, but not getting Erdogan and preventing him from speaking allowed him to rally his fervent supporters and lead to standoffs. The military would be in a tough position using tanks against unarmed civilians. They didn't have precision, too level support or were able to neutralize the government. They utterly failed and now Erdogan will punish them all severely, and sack even more of the pro-secular military. Several years ago he fired so many generals and colonels and initiated charges against them and instituted large level control. Now it is all but certain that he will take control of the military to prevent one again.

On one hand you had army and air components working together, so it wasn't an isolated command...

On the other hand, it was executed in such a haphazard way, especially for a western, modern army, it is just strange they would fall apart within what, a couple hours before people hit the streets?

Either the situation is worse than it seems outside of Istanbul or something really bizarre has just happened. Especially with the soldiers being shown on TV RIGHT after he President's speech...that is just bizarre timing...

you live up to your username

there are still some rogue guys running about in tanks and stuff

if some random event happens and again the situation flips 180 we will just see these theorist jump on the next ship again :/
It doesn't matter, Erdogan is going to remove further civilian freedom.

That's what matters.

yes it does matter

bullshit matters since reality and fiction are two separate things

They didn't get approval from the top chain of command. If it's only low levels then it makes sense why it was chaotic and confusing.

Why do the citizens want what seems to be a dictator?

Most of them don't. They think the democratic system will work if he oversteps his bounds.

I have my doubts seeing he's charged and jailed military commanders who wouldn't swear fealty to him instead of secularism, has jailed journalists, and taken steps to abrogate absolute power in his office.

The people will get what they deserve in the end.

I really hope the hold outs in ankara surrender like those guys in the bridge
who knows what will happen next
Is removing civilian liberties and freedoms also bullshit and fiction?
no but running around doing a shitty coup was also stupid too

those are two separate things.... one lead to the other don't ignore the other just because you can't stand it

instead man up, recognize your mistake

stop jumping to conspiracy theories
