Psycho Pass Episode 1

As far as first episode impressions go, I'm going to have to say that I'll have to wait for episode 2 to hopefully answer or flesh things out more because this show made no sense to me.[...]
There's two important points in your argument which I think are quite different to each other:

a) Why was Akane chosen to work with Enforcers when she has problems with the way the system works and

b) The Psycho-Pass system is inherently flawed in numerous ways.

I think that, for the most part, b can be ignored. It's pretty clear we're not meant to buy into it being a just system, rather it feels like we're watching a dystopian state's enforcer's keep everyone in line in the most effective way possible. I can't imagine that they wont explore the concept of "the system as bad guy" later on.

Which brings us back to a, which I largely agree with you on. You can't have Akane be the top student in the academy and have her act in the manner. They clearly waned to have Akane be the rookie that gets everything explained to her and have her react for the audience so she can be as shocked and appalled as we are. However that's inherently incompatible with the story, so it really is just bad writing.

Steins;Gate was pretty much like that too.

it didn't introduce a new character without any explanation whatsoever
people generally agree that steins gate had a slow beginning, whereas this new show seems to want to throw it all out there off the bat
maybe if John Connor had suddenly appeared at the end saying that hes here to save the world it would be similar

My problem wasn't that she was brought on the team, but that she apparently had no knowledge of how the system worked. We're supposed to believe she's a trained detective, yet she's shocked that the system would tag and the enforcers would bring in someone who hasn't done anything yet. That seems the to be the whole point of the system. If you're a trained detective, how would you not be prepared for that?

It's not even her forehead. Her eyes are abnormally huge, even for anime. I understand they make it to make her seem more innocent but... it doesn't work with the eyelashes. She looks like a [CENSORED].

No one does a Gintama recap episode like Gintama can~

Oddly enough, it looked really familiar to the Gintama Jump Festa 2005 Special. Weird.

It's really a problem of trying to make Akane an audience surrogate. You can't just transplant contemporary morality onto her character, with her background, and have it make sense.

That's all really covered by what I meant by "act in this manner". She acted like a rookie despite her character backstory.

Yeah... I really do dig the new OP. And that 2nd half with fulltime panda was so heartwarming.

Not everyone is cute. But it's nice to be loved by someone ;_;

It's time to accept, in this era of Butch being Butch and Shinbo only taking breaks from counting yen to count dollars instead, that the true talent behind Madoka's success was obviously aokiume.

Sakurasou no Pet no Kanojo 01

Fun show so far. Not a fan of 'main girl'. I guess i just don't really dig the 'emotionless girl' archetype.

Art is quite charming, and main character is quite... down to earth. And he likes cats!

I really liked how Shiro got out of his predicament and the whole chase afterward was cool. Everything is a bit too nebulous still, but there's time to explain some stuff, I guess.
Naked cat girl is awesome.

Gintama 254

haha, love that they still didn't change the OP/ED to the 'real one'. Curious how long they gonna keep this up :p

Seems like next eps will be the resolution.

Thinking it, what would have made for more interesting character development is if she actually believed in the system and had no problem with it in the beginning but over the course of the series the events she saw start to maker her question whether the system is fair.

its really a cheap way of personifying a character
deformed facial expressions and designs work in less realistic settings, and manga where you can fill the gaps with your imagination.
there is no excuse for using those gimmicks to portray emotion in the animated medium especially one of this budget.

many of those gimmicks were designed specifically because of budget constraint and the difficulty of portraying emotion in simplistic comics. When you have audio, movement and acting cues you shouldn't need any of that, and it really kills suspension of disbelief imo.

Or she could have fucked up by throwing the flask containing the sex monster and then said sex monster would start possessing hot ladies on the street who, after having hot sex with random strangers, would absorb said individuals' life essence through the miracle of orgasms.

Same shitty first day at the new job plot, more kinky.

I'll admit, Psycho-Pass has problems, but the premise is so damn good I can forgive that. I love sci-fi with an ambitious premise.

That would have been a much more believable and interesting way to frame the story.

She probably ties into the intro. They really didn't throw that much out there. It's really just a snapshot in regards to where the plot is going to go.

It's a background issue which can be resolved very easily. Whether they do or not is a separate thing but it's not inherently conflicting.

That's very cliche though. It does make sense but I would rather prefer the reverse in that the character starts out questioning the system but later coming to terms and embracing it.

Didn't have much of a problem with Akane's characterization. Clunkiness of the exposition aside, her behavior was in line with what she was introduced as, that is, a newbie, one who's sat behind a desk this whole time and now is coming to grips with field work for the first time. It's the same process of disillusionment, except we're starting at its end point rather than the beginning.

I'm sure a slower process would feel more natural, but I don't think that would line up with the kind of story they're trying (or might be trying, dunno) to tell.

Nice touch with
the divergence meter at the very start
.

Average episode, hopefully things will get more interesting as the cast fills out and the plot starts moving.

I do agree that this seems like an odd fit as a 2cour noitaminA show though.

That was good, but also bad. It's the kind of an adaptation that remains faithful to the spirit of the work, yet refines and clarifies it. It's a wasted effort though because in the end they're still polishing a bucket of vomit. Depressing stuff.

The orchestral score and the direction still sets it apart from most other shows this season. Unfortunately there's a big roadblock coming up and if it remains faithful to the manga it's going to be a pretty infamous disappointment.

Oh, and:

forty thousand brothers,
could not, with all their quantity of love,
be this pretentious. (I mean, he said this with petals and leaves and shit flying. It was pretty deep.)

random thought:

I did find the ED amusing, from the fifteen or so seconds of it that I watched. The uguu happy~ Kana Hanazawa song and and the cheerful character art juxtaposed with the background of crumbling ruins was sorta funny shit.

I think I didn't post anything about the first episode but I enjoyed it thoroughly so you can imagine how much I liked the second episode, which is superior in every way.
The show is so charming and fun, and it hits all the right notes with me, since I was a kid whose imagination was running rampant all the time. I can't stop smiling while watching this show.
The sakuga sequence was amazing, can't wait to see more of that kind of stuff.

Psycho-Pass 1

Seems a bit silly that the 'top of the class' nonmoe girl is so surprised with shit that is obviously taught in school. Premise is cool though, minority report with some ghost in the shell.

the whole gun UI is quite slick too. Reminds me of borderlands for some reason.

Medaka Box 12 END

Oh Nisio. What better way to end this than with an anime original story penned by Nisioisin himself. This was actually pretty entertaining in its own way.

plus it had dat yuu kobayashi so you know it's gonna own!

Now with that all over and done with, bring on Abnormal!

Psycho Pass - 1

I think Nafe explained all the problems with the PP system very well and I think similarly so I won't repeat all of that. My main issue with the PP system is that is not even remotely believable why such a horrible horrible black and white system where things can go horribly wrong any minute is in actually accepted in the society and it's not like the cases like this that go wrong are some rare occasions, all the characters not Akane act like it's business as usual, saying whatever you learned in Academy is pointless in here. It's not believable in any way, this is not Minority Report where they could actually see someone during the act in advance and prevent it from happening, Minority Report does a lot in world building to make it believable too. Like it's only an experimental program in only one state and how things are monitored by external authorities. Here, the PP system it's only an arbitrary number assigned to supposed potential of someone acting a crime, and the ridiculous thing is that knowing the number itself increases the stress and as a result increases the PP, it's a self fulfilling cycle. The point is such a thing being accepted in a society is beyond ridiculous, Psycho Pass in it's first episode isn't convincing any body why such thing exists, because there is no world building whatsoever aside from the PP system and it's enforcers explained in an example case. We don't know who is the government, is this a just, caring government? (definitely not, or maybe they are completely stupid ? ), how is this PP number exactly work, who made it? why they are using people that they know are senseless criminals supposedly, based on their own PP system, to enforce the PP system? looks like a nonsense circle to me this whole PP system. maybe the government are oppressive rulers? This is even more ridiculous than, hey let's sell these microwave headgears than can potentially melt people's brains as it stands, in both case there is really no role for a government or any authority, completely ignored ; I'm going to just accept it for now because it can potentially create interesting cases and the whole PP system will definitely be opened up later but the problem that why it's like this right now and it's accepted in the society to begin with still stands regardless, I think I expected more. Fate/Zero first episode with all walking in circles and talking was actually an informative and convincing set up, PP is not but it's more entertaining probably. I hope the premise in PP is actually fully thought out and we are not left with these problems in the end.

Akane's character design, she is supposedly a top student, fully aware of everything but the way she's designed coupled with Kana Hanazawa's typical "I'm a shy, weak clueless little girl, please help me" that she's done for million other anime characters sticks out among rest of team who all look like insensitive bunch they are, even the other male inspector isn't any better than the said criminals on first impression. This makes me think PP's overall conclusion is pretty obvious right now really. She will surely change over the plot and in the end it's obvious that the system will be changed or will be thrown away after the turn of events, what else can really happen? please surprise me! thanks, don't be a typical ending, I'm rooting for the system right now over this dumb society , hope it wins, it's what they deserve :p

The Denominator gun, the way it kills is way over the top, why is that really necessary? The law enforcers themselves cause a horrible thing that can affect PP so dramatically, just killing the target should be enough. again another crime-> law -> crime circle in the system.

Blood-C is solid popcorn entertainment with great action.
Personally, I would not recommend eating anything while watching Blood-C.
Thinking it, what would have made for more interesting character development is if she actually believed in the system and had no problem with it in the beginning but over the course of the series the events she saw start to maker her question whether the system is fair.
That seems pretty standard, though. Maybe we'll get something a little different and more cynical like she comes to accept the system.

Robotics;Note 1

Fuckin mobile gamers.

It's slow going, but so was Chaos;Head and Steins;Gate at the beginning, both of which I enjoyed immensely, so I'm not worried about this. Still, it does seem more upbeat than the other two, and if not for the scene at the end, also a lot less mysterious. We still don't really know what the show is about beyond some mech porn, but I'm hoping it's intriguing like the other science series entries are.

Also, I like the use of augmented reality. If there was an app to give people animal ears and tails that would accurately emote, I would use it on everyone.

Its quite efficient, if gruesome
the guy got shot in the arm which stopped him where paralysis could not
It all boils down to how necessary this type of system is in this world

A really good episode with some impressive art and animation as is to be expected from Umakoshi. There were some really beautiful looking shots in this episode.
As for the story, everything is still fairly simple, although the latest few twists did shake things up a bit. I liked the way this episode ended, it was an emotional scene, which I didn't expect seeing as how this show has mostly failed to bring out any type of emotion out of me.

right, that armored ninja like dude in the beginning, probably something like bullets are not enough for every targets, makes sense

It's good for entertainment too, I like it :3

Hi Anime people. Long time listener, first time caller.

I've been out of the anime game for a while but have caught up with my backlog. Ergo Proxy is the biggest load of garbage I have ever seen.

Anyway, as somebody who enjoys a bit of action or anything particularly well done I'm currently looking to keep an eye on:

* Sword Art Online
* Psycho Pass
* Robotics;Notes
* From the New World

Anything else I should be looking out for?
