I recommend
Hyouka as I don't think you've seen it yet, right? Chitanda and Irisu are both :Chet. It's kind of hard not to notice for Irisu, as quite often times in the earlier episodes just after her introduction they would frame her from the side.
Hah, well, I don't think it's fair to compare the people who are real grinders and get to do big shows and the people who do anime dubs. I figure that's like the divide between legit voice actors and porn voice actors in Japan (even if porn voice actors get paid more lol).
The women who can do boys/male characters are probably the ones with the most range. Maybe altos just have better range and this is yet another Kobayashi is great post in disguise. lol
Most of the men tend to basically just play variations of themselves or are basically just known for their voice and don't bother trying to hide it, like Wakamoto.
The thing with the Kugilolis is that it's more role-related than performance related. Like you can hear her voice in Kagura and Ed pretty clearly if you're able to divorce all the BAKA BAKA BAKA stuff from the way her voice sounds.
And you know, as weird as it sounds, American cartoons seem to be willing to be more abstract. So that even if the Spongebob voice is based on a real person (sort of), it somehow "makes sense" that it's attached to a yellow square sponge. You probably can't get too crazy when every other anime that's being made is set in high school anyway.
Yeah, that true I guess but there are some who overlap. As a quick side tangent, speaking of overlap, it's kind of annoying how western "video game reviewers" auto-hate JRPGs and will say the voice acting is bad (among other double standards). One group compared a JRPG to a WRPG and said one was better than the other as far as voice acting but the sad thing was that the voice clips used in their examples were the same person! It was
Liam O'Brian using the exact same voice for the same type of character! This is one of the many reasons I pay no attention to reviewers and just see them as getting free money at this point.
Anyway, I agree with you that male actors seem to stick with more the same voice or have a deeper voice for older characters and another voice when playing younger or more timid types. In both English and Japanese many young male characters are voiced by females. It reminds me of when I found out years ago that Bart was voiced by a female. I believe Nelson is voiced by the same girl too.
With
Yuu Kobayashi though, she seems to mostly switch from a deeper voice for male characters and tougher females to a softer voice for all other females. She's another one who usually has a pretty distinctive voice with the odd exception. For me anyway.
It's true too that many people don't have to display any range just because they have such a recognizable voice such as
James Earl Jones for example. There's some such as
Patrick Stewart who can display a range, as shown in his theater days, but doesn't really seem to use that when doing voice over roles. Honestly it was kind of weird watching the English dub of a couple of
Studio Ghibli films, as the Voice Director didn't seem to be looking for someone who could act and had professional training but more going for that "Celebrity Status" instead. That's not to say they still didn't do an okay job.
On that thought, using something like the English dub of
Final Fantasy: Advent Children,as I think it was intended to be a little bit more mainstream than your average anime or JRPG, the main cast seemed to be voiced by more well known celebrity people whereas the support characters, such as the Turks, were voiced by anime/video game regulars. The latter did a much better job than most, not all, of the more well known ones though.
Yeah, your final point could be another example of how the industry has somewhat driven themselves into a corner as far as creativity.
I watched the German dub. I might watch the original later on, but right now I have some 1500 episodes of anime to watch.
Ah, okay. I wonder if the German dub was as cut and edited as the English version. If it wasn't then it's not as big of a deal but if it was then I'd recommend it to you for whenever you get around to it. Being a
Sailor Moon fan I'd still recommend it anyway haha.
You mean this
one? If not, I drew that
one too.
Back in highschool I won like $100 in an art contest with a painting. It was one of the jurors' top picks. Looking back on it, I think it was awful, but who am I to judge?
I don't think I could ever stop drawing even if I wanted to. Helps me keep my mind off of things.
Nice. I think I got fifteen dollars or something and a little sticker saying first place the one time. I really only entered about three or four competitions though I think, it was really just a hobby for fun for me. I might get back to it someday, every now and then if I meet someone I haven't seen for awhile they might ask if I still draw sometimes.
EDIT: Oh yeah, as far as Palutena, there was that one but I thought someone had an avatar from the Palutena in this picture here:
