So Mayuri dying is a constant. THAT SUCKS. At least there's a way of changing it... although who knows what the consequences would be as a result. Are they going to go back and stop the invention of the time machine? I wonder how that'll pan out.

On the slightly less depressing side, I was right about Suzuha being John Titor and a time traveler. So that's something. She could stand to park her time machine better though.

This show. THIS SHOW. It must've been excruciating watching it as it aired.

You never mention the chance of it otherwise you'll jinx it is what I learned from my brother, haha.

Was pretty cool to see Mihashi not fall into despair though.

This scene was just so dynamic and powerful. I loved it. It really shows how far animation has come.

Apparently Shrine boy got himself a shrine waifu when we weren't looking. Also ghost stories are back.... but with an actual ghostdemon who loves trolling the shit out of people, one of her antics unfortunately caused a Romeo and Juliet situation as shrine waifu pointed out.

When they said Romeo and Juliet, the first thing was "So there's incest in here, okay" followed by internal screaming not even a second later going "THATS NOT WHAT IT WAS ABOUT YOU IDIOT!". But yeah, fighting parents and blah blah blah. The demon felt familiar, but it's probably my imagination.

Notes: When everyone bolted, Doremi fell, and only Onpu turned around to try to help her. She really must be into Doremi or something. I mean she never expressed interest in dudes... or she did and I was in denial.

Other note: Momoko continues to have similarities with others by having her wits scared out on the same level as Hazuki.

I couldn't believe my eyes. I guess it makes sense since Trigger probably don't have many CG specialists? Anyway, Mako makes up for it all though.

Guess I should have thrown in the caveat of him being enthusiastic about the production and having the opportunity to make more rather than making it because it's profitable.

Well, that's a given. I just think Watanabe's previous prime works were paced really well and he mostly has experience with shorter, more dynamic shows. SD to me seems pretty similar to Watanabe's other works (main character with an attitude, quirky cast, music oriented and a unique sense of anachronism with the themes and setting etc) and I just don't want it to overstay it's welcome.

Don't worry, Akito 2 will show us the good side of CG once more!

Well...provided the low video quality doesn't ruin the shading and such (again), but at least the disc release isn't that far off. The first entry looked great on BD.

The baffling thing is that it's SANZIGEN, aka the P&S and BRS guys. Just look at that thing, it gives me a headache. Hallway scene was much, much better.

Yeah it must have. Luckily I was able to wait it out and marathon the whole thing when I got the blurays. I kept hearing how good it was then I just bought the discs and saw for myself. boy did I ever see!

"I am mad scientist" bit isn't as good in the dub, but that's pretty much expected.

This episode was a little bit lighter, which is nice, although it still had a melancholy tone. It's nice to finally see a bit of a focus on Daru's character beyond being a stereotypical hacker otaku (well a bit beyond that at least). So the plan is revealed: Stop the first DMail. Simple enough, I guess, but I have the vaaague feeling it won't be quite that easy.

Jotaro is the least interesting person in Part 3! Bring out Polnareff!

So true. Polnareeff is probably the only part of Part 3 I love without question. Guy is so cool. I want to see what DP does with Silver Chariot.

He was kind of a cipher in the OVAs, wasn't he? I'm hoping that he has a bit more personality in the manga and/or the new anime adaptation does something more interesting with him.

He's no better. That's really my main complaint with Part 3. Jotaro is so damn boring. He doesn't even really get cool one liners. He's just blah. Combine that with the repetitive fights in the second half and it really drags everything down. It's really odd because Part 4 Jotaro is amazing and almost a completely different character. Had Part 3 been like that, it would have been far more entertaining.

Its not like the studio cheaped out on animation budget either. Other scenes are batshit insane. Its a weird example.
My question is, why even have it? It would have been a fine little fight scene if it were animated properly, but now it's just a completely out of place and awkward transition into this awful looking CG. Kinda upsetting, really.

Rose of Versailles 2-18
I don't really have much of a grasp on the production of this series, but this seems to be the point Nagahama stopped directing, so it seems as good a time as any to recollect.

This show has really been remarkable so far. As one would expect from works based around European nobility of this era a rich tapestry of characters exist to serve the plot. Handling a large cast can be an extremely difficult task, but Versailles pushes characters off and on the stage expertly in a manner that sets up new plot threads both large and small while resolving old ones. The liberal interpretation of historical facts here captures its own fascinating take on events with a story that constantly feels in motion.

The work with characters is particularly well done. Each is embellished upon, and with their motives and emotions in place the meaning of each scene is fully apparent. Because of this, no moment really feels wasted, and it's possible that for this reason the artistic license the show takes really shines.

Visually Versailles meshes vivid color work with masterful compositing, yielding to many moments that are just striking. Its greatest asset is probably the work done with transitions, that lends to a very natural flow to the series while setting up the opportunity for its more avant-garde effects to take hold. When a huddled mass of bodies throws a black shroud that engulfs the entire frame I couldn't help but find myself completely invested in what was going on. The crossing between reality and abstraction are astounding, and their near absence from certain episodes can really hurt.

So I heard the anime was sad or something, checked out the first episode... what the fuck is this shit?

Some guy apparently died and we are introduced to psuedo-Purgatory but it's a typical japanese high school! Not that I don't enjoy the high school setting but it seems so damn bizarre as the setting for the afterlife/Purgatory. Oh and the 'best' part was being introduced to all the characters in one scene, like hell I'm going to remember them. The only decent thing was the song being played in the concert but it's not enough to clear the "what the fuck is this?" question in my head.

So tell me true GAF, is this anime sad or not? Because right now it looks like I'm watching some random show that Yuru Yuri does better.

Actually, so far KLK has shown to be a good example of a smart utilization of a tight budget, rather than a big one, imo. It is weird that Sanzingen would phone their part in so badly though, or that any of the ADs would approve of that part at all.

Perhaps they just ran out of time in the end.

Motto! Ojamajo Doremi 30

The weird thing about this episode... is that watching 28 and then 29... it feels like watching the Sharp movie, and then moving into something unrelated before the episode it ties into. The only difference is that it's not a movie, nor was it as FEELS UP TO 11 OUT OF A POSSIBLE FIVE. In other words, the last episode sort of feels like a filler, or rather, and intermission, and this episode was a continuation of where 28 left off.

What happened was that the Queen cursed Hana to hate veggies, which is weakening her magical capabilities, so they need Majo Roxanne's recipe book since she served the previous queen. However she goes have a bake off with my homie g first rate cook. They got shat talked for being amatuers, but because they thought about Roxanne first and foremost, they ultimately won.

Next episode will ALSO be Hana related. Damn. Doki Doki Precure will probably just spend an episode on this, so Ai probably wins in terms of speed.... but Hana wins for being the better person.

Sometimes I wonder if the production studio might have not liked this scene but had to go with it for some reason we arent familiar with. Or maybe they just liked it?

Yes its sad. Its not very well executed though. Its a really poor clone of Haibane Renmei. thats not to say I didnt enjoy it though!

You just went from Madoka to Anohara and you want sad from Angel Beats?

Angel Beats is one of those anime that's really popular for some reason but I could never get into. I didn't like any character besides the rapping wannabe dude.

If you want sad anime you've already seen two top tiers. I'd say other anime that made me cry are:

- Ef: A tale of Melodies (also Memories. whichever one came second hit me worst).
- Wolf's Rain (first anime where I cried quite badly. Like bawling).
- Some of the Gintama deaths/story arcs made me cry quite a lot as well. Especially the story of Jerry the dog.
- Grave of the Fireflies
edit: plenty of anime with a character I cared about dying made me cry as well. Basically 90% of Urobutcher anime.

I know there's more. Like I said Angel Beats is usually ranked high alongside Cannad AS with the sad animes, but it didn't do much for me. Wolf's Rain was the worst for me.

Dude wat. All of part 3's main cast is great aside from Jotaro. Avdol, Old Joseph, Kakyoin, Iggy, Polnareff, Dio! They're the best!

Kyousougiga, Kill La Kill, Samurai Flamenco, White Album 2, and Log Horizon are the ones that've stood out for me.

Pretty much this, but I also want to add the Strike the Blood, Battleship anime (forget its name) and Outbreak Company because it won me over with the racism stuff. Though the last two are if you enjoy harem/semiharem anime. If you're in it for the class stick with the list above.

.... cough cough but Samurai Flamenco needs to get better cough cough.

It's sad all right but not for the reasons the scriptwriter intended!

I'm not sure sad is the best word (more like touching) but it's a great show. Keep watching and you won't be disappointed

Yeah, Samurai Flamenco is kind of on probation. The first episode was meh, but the second was a big improvement so hopefully it'll keep that trend.

I would prefer sad/tragedy but its not even that. Having it heard from many it was a sad anime I would expect it to be a little more grounded in its initial exposition instead of it looking like some middle schooler's thought of, "Man, wouldn't it be cool if school was like Call of Duty?!" Even Toradora managed to be grounded into a understandable realism and still be funny at times.

Anyways Madoka rule says only 2 more episodes to go, let's see if the show can change my opinion by then.

Chuck

Still without luck
Kill la Kill 3

Pretty crazy. Way too much CG and this is probably a bit too pervy.

Samurai Flamenco 3

Love this so much. Masayoshi-chan is definitely character of the season.

Its not as hoerrible as some would say but its quite heavy on the melodrama, like Saikano and Rumbling Hearts. Saikano being the most genuinely end of world depressing show I have come across.

Yup. Right in the feels.

I'm enjoying Golden Time so far. What else is good this season?

Gingitsune is adorable too. Kill La Kill is awesome. I like Unbreakable Machine Doll too because of Yaya but it has been kinda disappointing.

So I guess our midseason climax addition to the formula might seem a bit weird considering the previous seasons, but hey, the new additions and what it caused will be enough for Syrinx to really enjoy this episode.

Also Onpu gains mad points for this one. Adorbs.

Show aint done with your heart yet!

Speaking of which...

Steins;Gate 17

The onslaught of feels continues! This was another really sad one, Faris making that sacrifice... Nyargh! Not quite as heartbreaking as the last episode, but still pretty damn sad. How did Faris remember the past world line, though? Amongst the feels there is a mystery...

I swear if they go through all this and Mayuri dying turns out to be a universal constant...
