Fate/Zero 14 (S2 Start)

Hell of a way to start a season. There was just... a ton of awesome in this episode. The fight against the monster, Berserker and Archer dogfighting, Kariya and Tokiomi facing each other down, and
the weirdly sad death of Ryuunosuke. Bet Caster's gonna transfer to Kirei now.

New OP and ED are nice. I like that they're kind of a more somber tone. Can't say which I like more since I've listened to the first ones way more.

It gets better :D

AnimeGAF. What's your level of love for Cromartie High? Curious since I've been surprised by the community once or twice.

Well its got Freddie in it. I cant not like it by default.

Kyoukai no Kanata 1

Felt like I was watching a glasses wearing version of K-ON!'s Yui wielding a sword instead of a guitar.
I liked it.

An apt description that makes it all the more endearing.

You honestly can't be telling me this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDsTtSjnvf8

is superior to the following two pieces:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeNs3ZWuB0s

It might just be my personal taste talking but I prefer the songs that have depth in them told through classic orchestral instruments and/or the piano instead of, random upbeat stuff.

I don't care how many times AnimeGAF bashes Angel Beats, it won't change the fact that it's one of the best Key-related things ever made, and yes, it's far, FAR better than Clannad. Angel Beats was an amazing series done extremely well, while Clannad just couldn't hold my interest at all... it's not even close. Clannad, Little Busters... they're okay, but Angel Beats is far better. Kanon, too. And yes, I don't care if AnimeGAF also hates this, but I'll always prefer Kanon 2002 to Kanon 2006... Kanon '02 is a great series with a great, moving story. I know that Angel Beats and Kanon 2002 are rushed, but somehow I think I like Key stories better when they have to compress them a bit... some things are better longer, but other things are better with more time. Kanon seemed a bit too stretched out at 25 episodes. Angel Beats needed another ten or twelve, minimum, though; they did an amazing job with what they had, but it's tragic that they couldn't get a full season, the story needed it.

You are correct. Clannad's ED is good, but Angel Beats are just fantastic... they've got more depth and feeling to them for sure, and are better songs as well.

Something about Angel Beats makes me reallyl ike it despite all the problems with it. Its kind of charming in a way. It at least feels heartfelt even if its cheesy and strange.

Trolling and disgust-fueld exclamations of hyperbole aside, my biggest problems with Angel Beats were A) Maeda's particular brand of tragedy porn was in full groan-inducing swing throughout, B) The ending didn't feel earned, and C) Kanade/Tenshi is literally not a character (seriously, try the Plinkett test on her and see what you come up with) and by that virtue alone the main "love story", if you can call it that, falls flat on its face from the word go.

I agree about Kanade. Shes pretty much nothing. She does make a very cute/elegant figurine though so I guess thats something.

Really, the problem with Angel Beats is, if you want to watch an anime about dead people trapped in a mysterious world, Haibane Renmei is infinitely superior.

This is undeniable.

I mean, I guess you can look at things that way but a romance story is eventually what it became.
You had a group of people who had individual lives and experiences interacting with each other in death and that could have been a decent source of drama if that actually remained the focal point. In fact, the show was completely successful in doing just that when they did the Yui-centric episode, which also happened to be the only part of the show I legitimately liked. If the entire show were like that episode, it would have been really good and I would have had no problems.

Instead, and I'm going to ignore the incredibly forced and awkward comedy strewn about because that hindered things a lot more than helped, it kind of sharply drifted away from that central premise and started focusing on Otonashi and Kanade. And really, the crux of the narrative ended up being that Otonashi didn't belong there and Kanade was the reason why and everything hinged on the connection between the two, and said connection ended up forming the (very shaky and unconvincing) basis for their romance. It's not like it was just some incidental side plot, this was literally the entire point of the show in retrospect. Seriously, it's in the show's title. So yeah, given all that I'm going to complain when the central love story involves a protagonist with no real agency and a love interest that isn't a character and whom I struggle to spend more than a sentence and a half describing.

Angel Beats tried to do a lot of things in a little bit of time and ended up unable to do any of them competently as a result.

I remember you saying that some time ago, I just didn't want to be too intrusive by mentioning it every chance I get.
Yeah don't worry. I'll try and watch it Friday at the latest. And you hear Narag? WATCH STRIKE WITCHES!

As you can see earlier on this page, telling people not to watch something doesn't really work.
That's pretty true actually. Nice avatar btw.

It has the final episode antics and Wakamotocycle.
That's about it.

It gets a lot better when you get to Battle Tendency.

So why's Angel Beats so much more successful?

Damn..that hurt Ducky :(

;_;
At least Haibane wasnt an abject failure.

This is the reason no one in Japan can reproduce.

Because 30k out of 130 million people bought some insipid piece of tripe anime?

You guys are gonna make me pick up Polar Bear Cafe again, aren't you? I don't have anything to watch in the earlier parts of the week (other than HxH, which I'm really behind on), so I guess it'd be okay.

I got Pokemon X Saturday afternoon, and it completely consumed my weekend. It took me forever to read all the pages I missed on here.

Its worth picking up, although myself I havent really gone back to it. Its a fun distraction though.

Help me choose my friend

Re-watch Hyouka or watching Serial Experiment Lain for the first time?

Simple. Watch Lain.

By really slow do you mean a whole season and a half? Even then, by the time it gets to the sad part I'm already so disgusted by the over the top moe of the show that its impact turns what should be a frown into a smile. You can't cry for it unless you like the characters, but if the characters disgust you this early on, you'll never cry.

angel beats is a great show, with the main problem being its lack of length and larger than necessary cast of characters.

Wait, so you think CLannad/Kanon are disgustingly moe but not Angel Beats? they all have supercute moe style character designs. Angel Beats is just the modern digital iteration of it.

With the exception of Yui, I don't see it in their designs (perhaps the eyes?), but either way they don't have the annoying traits / nuances / phrases that they repeat over and over to try and be cute when it comes to how they go about themselves. In that respect, they're just like pretty much any other anime character. Angel Beats' character designs are pretty generic and somewhat forgettable -- one of the weaker points of the series.

Man, Kari really is the ultimate good of the series. More random Tai backstory, so many feels.

Izzy fakes multiple access points... somehow... on a laptop... inside the digital world. Leet hax0r skillz

In this episode, Kari randomly develops deus ex machina light powers for no good reason, but it's okay because she's cute

also lol the rookies all fail at digivolving this episode. Hilarious.

Kyousogiga TV 1-2

Watched this basically on a whim and because it looked nice. It paid off! Loved what I saw and the potential the show has going for it. Though, honestly, I feel like I shouldn't be watching this— or anything— until I've finished Uchouten Kazoku, which will happen in due time. In the mean time? The life consuming triumvirate of FFXIV: ARR, GTAV, and Pokemon X.

Have you watched 1 and 2, or 0 and 1?

"Bases loaded, two out, and we need a slam dunk!"

/edit lol, I forgot there was a deviwoman/angewoman slapfight. And then angewoman straight up ICES deviwoman. Man, everyone being turned back into data really allows for them to just shank dudes without appearing shitty

oh, that poorly animated magi .gif from this week wasn't even from the actual episode, it was in the pv for next week. maybe there's still hope.

Detective Conan 257:
And so ends another case of the dumbest criminals in the world. 'You see, I couldn't have done it because I was in a different place committing a different crime.' TMS sure can pick uninteresting stories for the Detective Boys to get involved with. At least Takagi had some decent moments in this case. But mostly, it was just a completely forgettable anime original case that didn't really bring anything to the table. It's slightly frustrating given how strong all the surrounding canon cases are at this point, but it just makes me determined to see all of that stuff animated and willing to overlook the occasional aside into TMS's dumb story ideas.

1 and 2. Am I missing something?
I'm not sure either. The one where Koto runs after the two bunnies from the beginning was 0, which was a recap of the five ONA right?

Speaking of sword designs. Are there any good ones anyone likes?

The 2 I really thought was cool was Renji's sword.
Zabirmaru seems so umpractical with all the weight at the top.

Gut's Dragonslayer is the best there is. Nothing else feels like someone is gonna be cleaved into two like a 2m+ sword hanging 3-4m over the ground.

The 2 I really thought was cool was Renji's sword, and Inuyasha's Tetsusaiga. Such cool designs.

I've always liked Ranma from Law of Ueki.

And no, it's not just because it's massive (though that does help).

There are way too many sword designs I like, so I'd have to think about it, but that's the first one that came to mind.

Elucidator
Dark Repulsor
Sode no Shirayuki (the most beautiful sword of all)

Kirito's sword was great. Looks so normal but the gap at the start of sword gives it its own personality.

I've always liked Ranma from Law of Ueki.

That giant sword reminded me of this character I saw on a show called Ruroni Kenshin. I never watched the show but I remember watching the OP, and seeing his sword was WAY too big compared to his body.

Gundam Build Fighters 3-

Yep, show of the season. The direction is so good. The character animation quality took a hit but god I love this 2D mecha. I want one Itano circus before this is all over.

The OST should be commended as well.

I think most sword designs in anime are pretty bad. They're either improbably huge slabs of metal or weird gaudy katanas.

The weapon design in Sword of the Stranger was good. The Attack on Titan swords are pretty unique and make sense for their intended purpose.
