Good in that it was pretty dramatic and cool and they basically got to unabashedly show off how outclassed the other guy was. Kind of bad in that they spent a loooooooot of time explaining things but the actual 'trick' of the fight was kinda shitty.

But whatever, the cat guy is cool and they have some history so that's cool too!

Revolutionary Girl Utena 39 END

With this kind of show, it's really easy for the ending to basically be a giant mess of weird, unsatisfying symbolism that leaves you wanting to slap the head writer.

Thankfully, this was a great finale. If anything the last mini-arc of the show was probably the least confusing part of the whole thing, I honestly didn't expect it to dedicate itself to answering as much as it did. I definitely didn't see the ending coming,
I was honestly expecting a happily-ever-after ending to the very end, despite the show kinda deconstructing that whole mindset,
but I really liked it.
the moment where Anthy and Utena's separated was a major emotional punch, as was the ending.

Will write up final series impressions now.

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 23-26
A bit of a "by the books" ending for a show that really set the bar quite high for itself in the earlier episodes. You can more or less plot the means that the series is going to end pretty early on and though I was anticipating a "What a twist!" type moment with how early on the main threat was taken care of it didn't really do anything to throw a curveball I think some might expect. Overall though I absolutely enjoyed the series and it definitely scratched an itch I had for solid SciFi shows this year.

Thank god no such moment occurred. Modern sci-fi storytelling has been overly reliant on those kinds of endings for far too long which just indicates that they've actually forgotten how to tell a story well. The ending of Yamato 2199 is so satisfying because it's a direct result of everything that has come before it and not some kind of pointless twist that would exist only to surprise the audience which is far less important that ending in a conclusive manner.

The Boss appears! Pixy Misa needs to understand that getting involved with MANLY SPIRIT is a bad idea, or you'll be drenched in manly tears.

Also confusion of Sasami's gender thanks to our clueless teacher.

The Light of El Cantare
Galilei Donna 5

JUST WHERE THE FUCK DID YOU THINK YOU WERE, FERRARIS?

STAINED GLASS WINDOWS.

PEWS.

STILL DIDN'T RECOGNIZE THAT IT WAS A CHURCH.

THEO EVEN MENTIONS FINDING GALILEO'S SCROLL IN THE BUILDING. AND IT STILL HAS TO BE EXPLAINED OUTRIGHT TO HOZUKI, BECAUSE SHE STILL CANNOT INFER WHERE SHE IS FROM THIS INFORMATION.

YOU HAVE TO BE SHITTING MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

pardon the internet screaming, but this aspect of the episode was so ragingly stupid that it's warranted.

Do I even need to mention the fact that everyone just gets handed the thing that they're looking for by the first group of people they run into after arriving at their next location without any effort on their part yet again? That the episode blatantly telegraphs the
tragedy ending
far in advance with an unadulterated, completely straight usage of
"kid insists that he's old enough and demands to fight as part of the resistance"
? That Hozuki is in her panties for no reason and there's an appeal to pissing fetishists in the first five minutes?

Unbelievably bad.

Revolutionary Girl Utena Final Impressions

Revolutionary Girl Utena was an excellent show, although it's the sort of thing that just won't gel with people. BECAUSE IT'S REALLY WEIRD. But like FLCL and other such things, most of the weirdness has a purpose beyond confusing you (that's just a bonus).

The characters were overall strong, and the show spent a good amount of time fleshing them out and picking them apart. Pretty much everyone, even if they were incredibly hateful, ended up sympathetic by the end. I did, however, occasionally have issues with the "back to status quo" endings of most of the character's episodes.
Wakaba's, for example, probably would've been more powerful if it had actually changed her somehow going forwards.
That's not to say the characters didn't change, because they did, it just felt weird to me how these episodes about exposing all these characters' inner feelings would end with everything going back to exactly how they were.

Art was nice. Very, very shoujo, but that's kind of the point. Backgrounds were really good, and I LOVED the use of silhouettes and shadows. Character design-wise, the show was at its best with the more ornate outfits, like the Rose Bride dress and the duelist outfits. The giant poofy shoulders on the girls' outfits were a bit silly. I only really had two issues with the art/animation: One is that it had a tendency to use a lot of ghosting, and two is stooooock foooooootage.

Now, I honestly liked most of the stock footage and didn't really get tired of seeing it, but there was an enormous amount of it, and it contributed to my only real issue with the series: Repetition. Around the end of the second and third arcs, the formula for them started to become really repetitive. The first half of the episodes would be good character development, but then
woop time for them to turn evil and have a duel as always.
The duels were where the stock footage really bothered me, because they used stock footage for the ending of almost every duel. There was rarely tension in the duels, because they were short and almost all of them ended exactly the same way. There was a purpose to the use of that stock footage, sure, but it didn't really reduce the tedium of it.

Soooo, overall it was an excellent, though not perfect show. Also one I definitely plan on rewatching, because there's no way I picked up everything.

Oh also the music was good. :)

I'd give it a little space. Watch it tomorrow.

Can do.

I think anyone who is still watching Galilei Donna and complaining about how bad it is at the same time pretty much deserves what they're getting out of it.

Now you get to watch everything again, but this time knowing what you're seeing. You would be amazed at how many scenes earlier in the show are given new life by this. Especially every scene with Anthy. She's been there the WHOLE time and you didn't even know it. Nobody does on the first time.

Oh yeah, a while back you mentioned something about the Prince turning into Anthy, but that was Mamiya not the Prince. Anthy was playing the role the whole time.

As for the ending, it may not have been Happily Ever After, but despite its bittersweet presentation it was pretty close. As noted by when the duel bells finally chime in 38-38, Utena won. Anthy is just the only person to understand this.

As billed in Japanese, Eromanga-sensei Imouto Akazu no Ma, or Hentai Manga Master: Forbidden Relationship with Little Sister, is the story about a brother caring for his shut-in younger sister, while working as a light novel writer on top of high school. And according to the synopsis, his sister only became his sister one year ago, and you know what that means. The big surprise (or the Eromanga-sensei part, presumably) comes from big bro discovering that his favorite raunchy light novel illustrator is a part of this two-person "family."

http://www.japanator.com/oreimo-author-s-new-series-is-another-sister-act-30335.phtml
That translation is weird.
The title means "Mr. Eromanga - My Little Sister and the Door that Won't Open"
"Eromanga-sensei" is a name, so "Hentai Manga Master" is kind of confusing.
I dunno where they got "forbidden relationship" from. "The door what won't open" refers to the fact that she's a shut-in and doesn't leave her room.
The last sentence, "favorite raunchy light novel illustrator" is confusing as well--what's actually going on is that the illustrator assigned by the publisher to illustrate the light novels the brother writes is named "Eromanga-sensei." (Mr. Eromanga) The brother does appreciate the illustrator because they do good reliable work for his books, but saying "favorite illustrator" just makes it sound like he's a fan in the normal sense.
And so then Eromanga-sensei/Mr. Eromanga turns out to be his sister.

Although I kind of want to see how they justify having a minor be involved in the porn industry. Most sane people would consider that a crime.
There's no porn industry involved in the summary at least. He writes non-adult light novels, she illustrates them. "Eromanga-sensei" is just her pen name.

Yeah, I'm not going to watch the whole series again right away, but after I finish the movie I'll at least rewatch the first episode.

Ah, right, I had forgotten the Mamiya/Dios distinction.

I loved the use of the dueling bells there. Utena really did win, despite getting attacked by ALL the swords. :p

Now there's a sequel about Utena and Anthy's globetrotting adventures, right?

Of all the things to complain about, this particular one baffles me the most. It's barely 5 seconds and one of the tamest "underwear scenes" I've seen in anime.

Come on now...

The Light of El Cantare
I think anyone who is still watching Galilei Donna and complaining about how bad it is at the same time pretty much deserves what they're getting out of it.

Confession: I wanted to see if it could outdo episode four, because that was already a special and rare kind of terrible that comes from extremely incompetent writing that still genuinely thinks it's good. I have my answer now.

Somebody let me know if the final twist is that the show is a prequel to Overman King Gainer so that I can watch the rest, but otherwise I'm done.

Strike the Blood 06

Everybody is a love rival to somebody!

Got a little wordy in terms of whatever they were talking about but looks like more action next week.

I'll trust you on this more than the initial translation of the summary.

I am curious if the "And now a rival best-selling pretty girl author has been added to the chaos!" line is accurate, though.

Thank god no such moment occurred. I think it was the whole
resurrection of Yuki thing
that soured my impression of the ending a bit. When you go out of your way to have one of the Officers say
"Miracles are made and don't just happen." thing and almost immediately after have a miracle just pop out of the blue with the Wave Engine not only magically resurrecting the girl but rebooting in the last second to save the Earth just felt like the show was bending over backwards to have a feel good ending vs. an ending that would have left one of the main characters actually dead or the Earth somehow royally screwed out of its position.
I was expecting something bittersweet, was prepared for something bittersweet, and I got buttercups and rainbows instead. I felt like the show cheapened itself in its last moments in its setting up for a type of twist that it never actually had any intention of following through with, instead everyone lived happily ever after.

If we're talking pure head canon then I would have preferred something like
the Wave Engine just giving Yuki the opportunity to say goodbye / her memory potentially being used as the fuel for the rejuvenation of the planet vs. what we got instead
. Am I nitpicking? I might be, I just felt like the ending didn't really live up to the bar the show set itself up to be from the outset.

You know, incest is an extremely old trope, but I wonder at what exact point in Japanese media did it go from a creepy, gross thing that shows the dysfunction of characters, to a selling point.

You know, it is interesting, the way incest is received. For instance, growing up in a religious, western atmosphere no one ever bats an eye that Adam and Eve's children must have intermarried (or Noah's) or that Abraham and Sarah were half-siblings, but at the same time pretty much every kid I knew in Sunday School would tell you that Lot's daughters boinking their dad was the nastiest of things.

I told you man, I told you. Imagawa is the god of all things Super Robot. They should have statues erected in his honour except that they'd get hit by dramatic lightning all the time.

I will offer at the altar of St. Imagawa forever after.

I can answer that with one word: Taboo, taboo is probably the number cause of most fetishes out there, its something your not suppose to enjoy, and that just makes you want it more.

I don't think Adam and Eve's children intermarried. It's pretty clear from Genesis that by the time they were cast out of Paradise, there were already other humans populating the world. Otherwise it wouldn't make sense that after Cain kills Abel, he is marked so that any man will know that he is a killer.

Noah is a more interesting case because the floor was supposed to cleanse the entire world, and there isn't really much post-flood details with regards to the activities of the family right after. It would be reasonable to think that the flood wiped out an entire region though, and that there were eventually other settlers in the area.

Lot's daughters were straight nasty not just because of the incest, but because of the idea that they felt that it was better to get their dad drunk and get impregnated by him that way, rather than try looking for a normal relationship to start a family later. And they were both virgins to boot. It's just strange on multiple levels and pretty disturbing all round.

Man the stories I would like to hear from this.....
