The elusive MrJeff has been caught and in doing so I was entitled to one wish. That wish, you ask? I wished he would watch bet me in order to restore the sanctity of the watchbet.
Thinking about it, every watchbet I've done so far has been me watching (arguably) bad shows for (arguably) good shows.
Theonik - Hyouka, me - Infinite Stratos
Theonik - Nanoha (okay this was an exception to the "good" rule) and Mushishi, me - Dog Days and Idolm@ster

And now Glass Fleet for Mushishi again. I seem to recall I watched Strike Witches S2 and the movie for a bet of some kind as well.

You know I've never had a good watchbet. I wish my faith in it could be restored.
While I can't guarantee anything, I'm sure I can find something good for you to watch!

I still need to watch this. Zachy wont let me forget either.
I was trying to get you to watch it as well! You kept rejecting it even on the pain threat deal of a watchbet!

Rage Against the Bahamut 2

OP offends my ears. If I had to describe this episode with one word, it would have to be inconsistent. The writing, pacing and art all seemed to be messed up in this one, and while we're just getting to know the characters, their portrayal here seems pretty inconsistent as well.

Shingeki no Bahamut 2

............................Amira...

Fun episode, feels like next one will really let the series take off with that adventurous feel.

Turn A 10:

I really really don't understand why Keith exists. It's like having Shining Hearts: Rick's Bread in the middle of a Gundam show. All he cares about is baking and sharing his bread. I'm also disappointed by how psycho Sochie is. I thought she would be an endearing sidekick-type character but she's just a pitifully one dimensional racist. The fact that this is considered one of the better classic Gundams makes me think that the original, Z and ZZ were even worse than I thought. Finally, it's really hard to keep my excitement up when the robot fights are just so lame and silly. They're all just clowning around. How this show manages to be less serious than Gundam Build Fighters is beyond me.

I'm only watching because I know that the show is going to get interesting, or, at least, enjoyable near the end. But the road there is just so long and meandering.
Hey, I recommended Anne of Green Gables, a legitimate classic based on a classic but you had to go and fall asleep!

RE: Your criticism, I can't disagree with anything you've said in particular. How much one enjoys Turn A depends on how much one enjoys silly, goofy Gundam stuff. I, personally, think that the Original, Z and ZZ are all far worse than this show, which goes to show how bad Tomino is as a director.

Sailor Moon Mondays: Sailor Moon Episode 45

So at last we have reached the penultimate episode of the first season of Sailor Moon and indeed one of the most shocking episodes to ever happen in the Magical Girl genre. First, I need to address a few things, this episode makes me understand why Toei is going so far in the opposite direction with the tone and direction of Crystal, maybe too far, but still why they are doing it. This episode was marred and indeed almost ruined by the stupid comedy spots in the beginning of the episode. This is episode that demanded a needed a special weight to it, if you needed to humor it should have been to lighten and otherwise heavy mood and acting like this was a typical episode does it a disservice.
That being said, the episode still does a decent job in underscoring the emotional weight and impact that the death of the Sailor Scouts has. Admittedly it is hard to have that much in the way of emotional resonance these days knowing that they get better but within the context of not only the episode but the time of release this was absolutely emotionally devastating as this show had the chutzpah to kill off its supporting cast. An act that surprised even the mangaka. I do like the added touches of having the loss of the other scouts at first shocking Usagi into so much grief that she almost surrenders because she doesn't know what else to do. That being said, her over-exaggerated personality does oversell the pain at points with at back the resolve. Also, still endlessly amusing at how many of the love interests ended up being emotional dead ends. Seriously, why did that happen.
Anyway, automatic highest recommendations to watch this episode, but the episode quality has been diminished by time, perspective and bad comedy.

Sailor Moon Mondays: Sailor Moon Episode 46

Right, so whatever the missteps that past few episodes have had, they have been a solid building to this the ultimate climax of Sailor Moon season 1 and with the full weight of the season behind it I would say this was not only a really excellent handling of the end times but maybe the best episode of Season One to boot. Indeed not only do we get the emotional capstone for Mamoru and Usagi and we reach stakes that are literally world ending. The end fight was pretty epic in spite of a lack of action, but perhaps that is for the best since Sailor Moon fights are pretty shitty on the action. Also, kudos for using the power of good two shoes in ways that do not feel trite or forced, always a problem there, looking at you Harry Potter. Anyway, we end things on a book end that scream that they were not sure they were getting a second season at the time of creation so we can make this a series end but keep it open enough in case a sequel comes along. Anyway, capital episode and of course highest recommendations to watch.

Sailor Moon Series 1 Review:

So to all legends there is a beginning, and this is the beginning of the legend of Sailor Moon both in-universe and to international acclaim. That being said, does it hold up after 20 years? Well, that answer is yes and no, in fact, I can sum up this season with one word and that is uneven. When the series was on point, it could be quite excellent, I think the overall high point was from the end of the Nephrite arc to the beginning of the Kunsite arc, basically the Zoicite arc, and not just because Zoicite was the best villain of season one. The Zoicite arc stands out because the monster of the week format actually enhanced the story since every monster was connected to the overraching plot and there was a sense of progression every episode and you knew what the stakes were at any given point. The worst was undoubtedly the beginning of the series where we had to deal with Usagi and a rookie super hero, having to put up with her ultra grating exaggerated anime personality with nobody to bounce off of was truly teeth grinding and I am shocked it didn't get the series cancelled. Indeed, there are some very rough spots to the first season, some of it was just endemic to the times and the length.

This season alone was 46 episodes, so it had to fill the space in some fashion and had to draw out characterizations and plots and all that jazz. Some errors are more inexcusable, like how they screwed up some of the characters, I had not released how badly botched Minako is in this version, but I can tell you she is a hell of a lot more interested in the manga and hopefully Crystal then she was here. The unevenness of Sailor Moon can be best expressed in its villains this season, the Four Great Kings all had distinct personalities, goals, hopes, drams wants, needs and other character make up that made them compelling and thus were the real driving force of intrigue. On the other side of the coin we had Queen Beryl who just sat around on her ass barking orders and that was about it.
She was less a character and more a harold and personification of the power ofQueen Metalia, who displayed truly world ending power in the flashback. In the present she little more then background noise form Beryl, and this is why Beryl is much more remembered and iconic of the series, for as flat as she was, she was basically the face of evil for this season as uninteresting as she was.
So, I suppose if I had to rank this season and grade it, I would give it a C and maybe say it is the middle of the road, an alirght beginning, but both better and worse times are ahead.

Sailor Moon 45

Well...

Was gonna say something about the Dark Kingdom only sending a handful of monsters when they're this close to the portal and everything, but... Yeah, being a magical girl is suffering... Sailor Moon also got her own Star Wars moment.

Yeah these two episodes....wow. When I first saw them, I was literally stunned by what had happened. totally did NOT see that coming. I think I was most amazed that Toei had the balls to actually do that kind of ending. Then Dic's dub came along and it was the worst editing job I have ever seen. It wasnt just changed, it was straight up butchered, with two full episodes whittled down into one. Hopelessly rushed and devoid of emotion of any kind. Sailor Moon was literally ruined in the west.
That said, after such a powerful opening salvo, I am still having immense trouble getting into R at all.

So, yeah. You're going to watch the best anime of all time.

I dont see Haibane Renmei there so this must be incorrect!

At one time I was interested in watching Turn-A Gundam, but after G-Reco and Haly's impressions here I plan on avoiding anything Gundam not named Build Fighters in the future.

And that she does.

So the world
reset at the end? Or did it just go back to the way it was?

Pretty good overall. Sure, there are some weak episodes, but most of the episodes got either something funny and/or interesting happening.

Funny expressions are always a plus and there's some good sad parts. Even liked the anime original Naru parts.

Only saw a dozen or so episodes back in the day so there's limited amount of nostalgia I got for the series. The OP and first ED is something I remember and they're still good.

I give it 4/5 planetary symbols in total:

An episode on figuring out how to save water... Using those empty water bottles so the tub fills up quicker got me.

Rage of Bahamut - 02

Nice to see Demon girl Amira warm up with some cute personality. Not sure I like how overpowered she seems to be.
Quite enjoyable episode. You just don't want the episode to end, and by the time it does it feels like it's been a couple of minutes. Looks like there's bigger fish to fry than those soldier hunting her down

I think it was Crest of the Stars I watched for you to watch Strike Witches, worth it. Dangle also made me watch white-people movies in exchange for Sketchbook and Garupan.

Shingeki no Bahamut -2

Yea there was a bit of a drop compared to the first episode but it's still really good and the presentation/direction is topnotch.

I'm also liking Amira a lot more than I expected.

Well, perfunctory CG action intro aside, this was another pretty good episode and it confirms that the enjoyable writing from the first episode wasn't just a fluke. It's good to see that they kept the characterisation of Mr. Afro as kind of a weasel which is a blessing considering I assumed that he'd become some kind of good-guy after embarking on his quest. It's actually rare to see a protagonist of this sort in this day and age: he's not a hero, villain or even an anti-hero, he's just an amoral rogue without redeeming qualities. Compare and contrast with a personality blackhole like Shirou or Inado.

On the production side it's pretty clear that they invested a lot of time into making that first episode a killer because this didn't nearly have so many insane action sequences but it still looked pretty damn good, especially the dancing. So, all in all, very positive.
I don't think I agree with that assessment. Pretty much all the characters remained true to themselves throughout that's thanks to the writing. I couldn't really see a problem with the pacing either although that first sequence felt fairly pointless.

Nuff' said.

Bahamut: Genesis 2

Not as riveting as the first episode but this was still just a lot of fun. The episode ZOOMED by. Amira is developing a personality which is good to see but they could do more. Favaero continues to steal all the scenes :) I really want to see where they end up going with all this. Some of the CGI with the knights and Golems bothered me but the scene at the inn was excellent so I'll let the mediocre CGI slide.

OP song is bad. ED song is good.

Well Favaro is much more of a dirtbag in this episode compared to the first, but then again we only had one prior episode for comparison. So due to that, I wouldn't call it inconsistent.

Kokkuri-san - 01

Depressing and funny at the same time. Why is she living all alone, and sometimes she looks like a normal girl?
Makes me wonder if this is purerly to forceplot Kokkuri to act as a guardian to someone in dire need, or if she really is a "living doll born of the state of the art biotechnology". Surerly child protective service would have stepped in otherwise. Or maybe I'm just overthinking.

You know, I think the reaction to this work, while entirely justified, wouldn't be nearly as inflamed if this work was viewed in the correct context. What do I mean by this?

Well, people talk about this show as the worst thing since Hitler they basically mean that, compared to the other anime they watch, it's incredibly over the top both in it's writing and it's misogyny. This is the reaction you get when normal anime fans check out the latest show from Sunrise that has cute girls riding robots and they get Cross Ange.

When viewed in a different context, the show makes a lot more sense. That context is the world of softcore porn anime like Queen's Blade. No one talks about how ridiculous and unpleasant those titles are because that's basically what you'd expect from that kind of work. No one world watch Queen's Blade and then write a whole essay about how badly it treats it's female characters because that's what you expect to see when you watch that work. However, when you're watching Cross Ange you expect it to be just like any other anime and it just happens to be an exploitation film.

Once again, I'm not defending the material present in the show, I'm just saying it's hardly unusual for Japanese anime to have that content. It's certainly no worse than a lot of those shitty fanservice shows because they're all equally bad.

Rage of Bahamut - 2

Bad soldier and mech CG aside, this episode looked really good. The scene at the Inn was amazing.

MC seems like he is going be a Fujiko, and stab everyone in the back every episode. Seems fun and fresh.

I also should again mention that something in Funimation's encoding is crushing the shit out of the black in Bahamut. In some ways this is worse than Terror in Resonance because the color palette for Bahamut so far is darker in a number of scenes.

Funimation fix your shit.

I don't do watchbets. I don't believe in wasting time watching something I don't want to, and I don't believe in forcing people to watch stuff they don't want to. But if anyone is looking for recommendations of obscure shows or stuff people just don't generally talk about but I feel are interesting and unique enough to be worth a try, I'm always willing to offer suggestions!

For example, I still don't think there are enough people here who have watched Fantastic Children.

Another great and beautiful looking episode aside from CG soldiers. MC proves he's pretty bad at being a turncoat when it matters. The scene in the inn with the dancing was magical and the music really set the mood well too. Glad Amira is actually showing some personality and isn't' deadpan like I was thinking she would be.

DIGIMON TAMERS: 01

Historically considered the best Digimon season by many, Digimon Tamers is a darker twist on the series as a whole. It is also the first season to take place in a new continuity.

We meet our 'Goggle Boy', Takato, as he plays the Digimon TCG (Or something like it) with his friends. However, when his cards spill outside of their hideout spot, he finds a mysterious blue card amongst them. He scans it with his card scanner, which transforms into a new device. At his home, he attempts to scan some sketches of his, ones of a made-up digimon, obviously failing. However, the device proceeds anyway, ripping the pages from the sketchpad.

At night, in his dream, he witnesses a battle between a girl and her digimon partner, and another, partner-less digimon. When he tells his friends about the dream, they ridicule him and run off. His device starts reacting, giving a compass pointing to a beam of light. When he arrives, he finds the digimon he drew, come to life...

...

My devil's advocate theory is that more than intentional misogyny, the most polemic bad stuff is just a product of
1. tries to be super edgy
2. also have fanservice thrown in there because animu!
3. bad series done by mediocre creators

But when you put all together is seems worse than each part by separate.
edit: just a theory, it maybe as awful and intentional as some people suspect, in the end!

And here I thought having it shown in a handful of cities outside of LA and NY would be pushing it. Damn.
