Fall Anime 2014 lOTl Unlimited Tomino Works

That had to be one of my favorite parts in the series. When you find out
that she's cheating
I couldn't stop laughing!

Hm... I dunno. I thought the vacuum bit was funnier. When she does that as a last desperate attempt to look cool by playing the card game it's really something, but I felt more sad for her at that point.

Shirou is the complete opposite of a self insert.

Yeah I'd like you to go into detail with that. Maybe he'll finally change at some point but so far he'd be the perfect fit for a generic harem self-insert.

And honestly, I've rarely seen a show where people tried to defend the content that's been released in the anime thus far with information from the entire story (as seen in the VN). I'll be seriously surprised if I can look at these episodes in hindsight and go "oh yeh it's actually totally great now!"

When she saw the "inspiration" vision and the vocal song kicked it, it was clear this short was made by people who had no real interest in cycling or showing their love for it as a hobby or as a sport - it was just a random theme picked to frame a lazy throwaway story about "a person who really likes something and makes a little progress in it because she really believed" or something. Lame.
"Brought to you by SKY".

Has anyone posted anything about Yuri Kuma Arashi's website update other than about the trailer?

Big story synopsis up now:

(note: Arashi ga Oka is the Japanese name of Wuthering Heights)

There seems to be something key to this "Barrier" concept (danshaku). I've probably not translated it properly. It seems that Life Sexy, Life Cool and Life Beauty are all members of the "Danshaku Court" referred to in the trailer, but I haven't read through any more information on them yet.

Well, this sounds pretty fantastic. Even more out there than I was expecting.

Most importantly, expect something approaching PABLO POWER:

I'm a bit confused as to whether it's ACTUALLY Studio Pablo or not, though. Chieko Nakamura is doing art direction, as she did on Penguindrum and Utena previously (that's immediately obvious from the architecture), but the show doesn't fit on Studio Pablo's schedule according to their website - after Wixoss finishes, they're not supposed to have a new show airing until April.

Art still looks lovely, though.

Well, it's not Pablo, but it looks really nice. There definitely shouldn't be anything to complain about in that regard. I'm looking forward to the architecture porn.

Yama no Susume - Season 1

Felt a pressing need for some healing anime, and decided to finally watch this. It's only a bunch of 3 minute episodes, so it didn't take long. Pretty fun show. Unlike Pupipo, it doesn't really try to do something particularly ambitious with the short anime format, but instead maximizes the runtime to show stages of character growth instead. As with all healing shows, the pace is leisurely and deliberate, and it emphasizes the value and importance of ordinary moments spent with friends. I enjoyed how the series was laid out, and it's nice to see a realistic progression in the character's interest in hiking, instead of having a grand goal from the start. It feels like a solid prologue season leading into what is supposed to be a much more elaborate and longer second season. Looking forward to starting that too. :)

SAO S2 E19

As a positive the sword fight between Asuna and Yuuki was really damn pretty and enjoyable and I'd even go so far as to say it's the best fight from a visual perspective in the whole series.

That's the only positive, other then that I wanted to die the entire episode. Why do we need a subplot about Asuna's mother wanting to choose who she marries and what her career is. Seriously half the episode is focused on this and 1/4 is Asuna reminiscing about her time in SAO -.-

(Big UBW spoiler)
You mean where Archer tells her to let Rin and him go in compensation for his alliance with her? Or where because Caster was trying to rule breaker Saber she ended up healing and turning the battle back in the heroes favor?

Yep. Actually now that I think about there's another moment that was single-handedly the worst moment in the entire route. But I'm gonna try not to go too far into spoiler territory.

Well they do explain Shirou's actions (though I'm not sure how that'll be done in this format, probably some poorly placed dialogue about ideals or whatever) and he does level up at a point. But he still sucks.

I'm preeetty sure something like that Saber scene was in the VN, but I do hope they choose the
good ending
for maximum lolz. Also I like how Shirou gets all nervous around one incredibly gorgeous girl that shows zero interest instead of getting nervous around the two other incredibly gorgeous girls that actually want him, one of which cooks him food everyday purely because she likes him so much. Shirou logic.

I've posted about this, others have posted about this, we've talked about both shorts and the project itself, if you don't pay attention don't ask people to explain it again! :p :p
I should stop reading this thread completely. lol

Hmm...arguably that's what's being done with Ronja. These are still distinctly ghibli designs.

http://img1.ak.crunchyroll.com/i/spire1/cca2f05fa8fe9ebb02df1f1fea386dcb1409364413_full.jpg

Here's the ED which features only 2D sketches of the characters.
The trailer I saw looked a lot more like Kingdom, in terms of the actual animation/movement, but yeah, it does try to look like a 2d anime I suppose.
I think all(?) 2D Western cartoons today are CG-assisted and rely on digital means of production. Flash is a very popular software. We might be discussing people turned off by 3DCG in this thread/anime fandom, but you can find people out there who will cause an uproar over Flash being used in 2D animation. A lot of people complained after the Steven Universe pilot was released and then for the actual show they simplified the designs to use in Flash. And there are even people who hate the whole digital to begin with and won't watch an anime/cartoon not totally hand-drawn/with film grain and all that.

In the West, 3DCG is prevalent. It will not make a show a gauranteed (financial) success though. Polygon Picture's Tron Uprising got cancelled, as did Titmouse's Motorcity, which played on the same channel right before or after it, and the latter is gorgeously done 2D in Flash (and Facinator). I guess it's risky business however you do it.

Popular 3DCG shows like the How to Train Your Dragon show and stuff like Doc McStuffins and Sofia the First targets the really young kids and sells a ton in
merchandise. Interestingly they are done by studios known more for their movies and that have largely abandoned 2D (Dreamworks and Disney). To me that says brand recognition is powerful and kids are the prime market (kind of obvious if you watch cartoons at all).
I just don't watch enough new kids cartoons to know what the landscape is nowadays, but I suppose that makes sense for tie-in stuff that nerds don't really talk about.

The digital assisted stuff doesn't bother me or most people because if used well, it should be mostly unnoticeable. South Park, for example, has an aesthetic where the digital animation is almost hidden in the art style.

That part was pretty great too. I really need to pick up the BD at some point.

I mentioned Hill Climb Girl earlier in this post in the thread, was pleasantly surprised to find so much if it is actually 3D after watching it.

From this:
To this:
It's quite interesting to see how CGI's been incorporated into anime over the years...the most dramatic example I can think of is Initial D.

From 1st stage back in the late 90s, where the cars were looking like PSOne-quality FMV, lol.
To 5th stage which started in 2012...the cars blend in with the rest of the anime almost seemlessly.
Ehhh... I don't know about seamlessly. A lot of anime will use CG cars now, and when they do, it usually sticks out like a sore thumb.

Hill Climb Girl tried its best to try to maintain that anime look, but the way the characters actually moved sort of betrayed its CG animation origins.

Most importantly, expect something approaching PABLO POWER:
I forgot, what is Pablo Power anyway?

SNAFU 09

bL2p2ix.jpg

That ill-timed phone call.

Hachiman and Yuigahama manages to go to the fireworks festival with some help from Hachiman's sister then.

That part was pretty great too. I really need to pick up the BD at some point.

Watching it now since it's in that RightStuf sale and I want to see if I want to buy it.

I forgot, what is Pablo Power anyway?

Isn't it about great looking backgrounds from Studio Pablo?

Fate/stay Night 06

Is Shirou's goal just to try to go mono a mono with every Servant he sees? I don't think that's a good plan, he should stop doing that. He got his shit pushed in with a kendo stick, come on.
So should all the Masters live and come from the same town? Is that by design? How many mage families can possibly live in the same area.
Pretty boring exposition episode. I don't really know why I'm watching this anymore, nearly every facet of the writing bothers me.
Maybe if Caster didn't spend so much time being sexual and goofing off she would've sucked out Shiro's magic. But we can't have that happen now can we

Log Horizon 2 07

Pretty boring episode too. Hopefully next one will be good.

Sword Art Online II 19

"I DIDN'T GO EASY ON HER BECAUSE SHE'S A GIRL"
Yeah but you didn't use your OP duel wielding skill, so you kinda did Kirito.
Wouldn't want to ruin the chances with the new Haremite I guess.
Swordfight was neat, although there was lot of sloooow doooowwwnnn then fast parry which kills the momentum

Parasyte - 6

The female cast here is hilariously terrible. What's up with that? The episode was okay overall, though. Liked Shinichi's development.

My impression is that they're attempting to make this into more of a harem-esque show tha the manga was. But it honestly hasn't bothered me since those that are plot relevant each have their role. The mom, a somewhat antagonist, the mary jane love interest, etc...

Hachiman's life of a loner is definitely a interesting one. Too bad it's so short, but a sequels coming and I already caught up reading the novels which are really good, definitely worth reading. If anyone is wondering if the plot gets better after the anime, it does. By the way, I'm kind of half expecting Hachi to end up with Saika, instead Yui or Yukino (not that I wouldn't mind either them also), so that it could live up to it's name.

Just finished watching DBZ: Battle of Gods English Dub.

It was actually better than what I expected, less battles, more overall fun,
the Pilaf Gang being turned into little kids was a great idea, little Mai is adorable. Although their ages are basically retconned since she says that she's 41 in March, making her the same age as, if not a bit younger than Goku, but that also means she must have a physical age of 8 or something in the movie, she should really be much closer to Bulma's age considering how she looked in DB. It was a fun take the mick out of GT as well in a way. Shu and Pilaf don't really change though, and neither did Trunks, Goten or Marron.

Beerus (yeah, surprisingly not "Bills") was pretty awesome and a surprisingly nice guy, I guess that being a Deity does that, I mean I know he acts like a spoiler brat, but I'd imagine Vegeta would be exactly the same with that sort of power.

Oh, and Vegeta's fully got into the Husband role now, he was hilarious,
dancing and singing the Bingo song, even if it was out of fear, was blooming great. As well as "That's my BULMAAA!".
I guess the end of this was the night Bulla (Bra) was conceived.

The fights themselves were nothing out of the ordinary for DBZ, although Beerus was massively OP compared to the rest of the cast, he is a Deity mind, but then with that sort of power he should have destroyed the earth 1000 times over (although that could be said with Cell and Buu in the past),
Super Saiyan God Goku not even being able to really match him was great since it gives Goku something to aim for in the future.
.

There was even a reference to "Hey Son Goku and his friends return" with Tarble being mentioned when trying to get another Saiyan to make SSJ God happen and the whole movie felt a lot like it in structure. I enjoyed it, and there was a lot more great parts besides what I've mentioned in this post.

The problem is that it's in all caps, so I have to assume it's ironic.

I'm really looking for more Dark Knight antics, given what I remember about the post-anime novels. In terms of anti-social self-aware protagonists, I feel like he rides the line perfectly between the idealized life of Haganai and the suicide-pact life of Aku no Hana.

Came in today
I like this show more than I should because it pisses off the Nobunaga purists. lol
Too bad a second season seems unlikely at this point.

I still feel like they do more with less in the first season, but I suppose the second season allows for more elaborate stories.

Wonder when someone will make the western equivalent of all those harem Oda Nobanaga shows.

That sucks. It ended with a cliffhanger.
There's always the light novels. lol

Hey firehawk good timing. Not too far off from finishing the Wire. How's Treme comparatively?
I think Treme is a tighter show in that Simon and Co are more comfortable representing a slice of life and handling multiple storylines, but it's also not as... explicitly preachy as The Wire. Like, the first season is very "This is the real New Orleans you stupid American fucks", but it just calms down and becomes a look at how life never really settled down after Katrina.

But also like The Wire though, it's also tremendously underrated and under appreciated, because people have already forgotten about New Orleans and because it's not about dragons or people in 1920s outfits being gangsters. lol

Even on the Internet, not everyone is ironic all the time.
IMPOSSIBLE!

should do a whole series with the violence toned down. Jane Wilkes Boothe can hit Lincoln in the back of the head with a rubber band in Ford Theater

This is awesome. I've been trying to gear some of my education towards CG after seeing the way it's progressed in anime. It'd be really interesting to see how we could narrow that strange gap in between traditional animation and cgi, although I've still yet to put my finger on why I can still tell that the screenshot posted before is CG. Maybe it's the clean shading?

Code Geass 13

C.C.'s best scene so far. Giving that dose of reality to Lelouch after he was getting all hesitant after killing Shirley's father. He's killed so many people thus far but now is getting emotional just cause one of them was close to a friend of his? That ain't how this works, buddy. Everybody who dies leaves people grieving behind them. Shirley's no different. On that note, why the hell do they wear their school uniforms to a funeral?

Shirley seems to know now that Lelouch is Zero. Oh boy. Gonna get uuuuuuugly. If he weren't injured he could just use Geass to make her forget. But this show seems to be going in a different direction.

New OP and ED aren't very good. Old ones were better.

You have zero idea what's coming. I'm so giddy. I love when people watch Geass.

Also, it has the best OP.

It's always fun to see people watch and react to the show, but I also like when some of them have opinions, both during and after the fact, that don't fit the perceived stereotypes.

World Trigger 6

They are finally getting to the parts where World Trigger gets good and when I finally got hooked when reading the manga. It's too bad the budget continues to be virtually non existent and that most people have given up on the series already :/ I can't blame anyone for watching 5 seconds of the first episode and going "lol nope" because this show is really boring visually.

Happiness Charge Precure! 40

The generals still haven't been purified, but there was some really nice action this week. Lots of dynamic attacks that weren't quite stock footage, Megumi launching a giant heart-shaped energy bomb from ORBIT, and a Titan-sized Saiark that truly did feel like a bigger threat than normal. You can never have a day off when you're a superhero, and I didn't expect the generals' last chance (even if they're still alive) to have such a fun fight. It's pretty obvious when the
Christmas
card they won this week is going to be used. The endgame is close at hand, and I can't wait to see where it goes.

I don't think I've ever seen a CG car blend in "seamlessly".

HappinessCharge! Precure 40

There was animation up in here. Some things that stood out was the fact that mermaid cards was actually used in a fight, as well as Coconut Samba being activated without stock footage.

As for the guy that Iona went on a "date" with, they apparently exchanged books. I think they're on third base now. But really, Earthbound looking kids and Gunbuster as fuck Cure Lovely aside, they really did extend the Toilet Bowl song a bit much considering Innocent form wasn't active up until that point, so it was basically "Innocent form into Aidoru Mode" stock footage. I think this may compete with Smile Precure to have the longest stock footage in the franchise.

And it looks like despite how.... relaxed everyone was, we're going straight into the Final Arc
part 1, w/ Christmas Intermission
and from the looks of it
Part 2 will primarily be about Deep Mirror since the next three eps will be about Queen Mirage's last stand, as well as her minions.

Hmm, this was alright I suppose. Had some funny bits but they all relied on the same thing - lewdness. I hope the comedy evolves into more than just that.

Minorin from Toradora, I'm too grumpy for their.. positively eccentric personalities, so she's already a no go in my book. Didn't see much of Aoyama but I'm already rooting for her.

I'll give it the three episode rule.

How did the MC know he could make a shock wave and beat 3 enemies like that?

Besides for that and the out of nowhere scene with the fish in a bowl this was probably the most sane episode of G no Reconguista. The action at the end was all really good and I guess our MC is gonna end up aligning himself with the pirates... for some reason.

Wow, what a fantastic movie. I could see myself putting this in my top 5-10 all time favorite anime movies. Everything about it was well done, from the characters and cinematography to the transitions between the past and films. I cannot find the words to express how much I loved the movie. I want to go back an hour and half ago to view it again. What do/did you guys think of this movie?
