Yeah. The technology behind it seems really quite something, isn't it? But as our very own XiaNaphryz hinted at (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=42906466&postcount=332 & http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=42907182&postcount=338), the magic is more in the beautiful implementation rather than in innovation itself, is the style what sets it apart. From comments I've seen, their SIGGRAPH 2012 panel was inspiring because of how much they drawn attention to the roots of their own studio not only to handle a new project like this one but to make a demonstration, a 'tour-de-force' claiming the importance of keeping some traditions inside it, a call. It is like a subdued punch in the table!
All in all, an amazing achievement! Those pencil tests and pre-production images alone, that they were so focused on replicating and keeping over for the short, make for a good mini art-book... lucky ones those that attended said panel!

I actually liked the first episode. The color gradient thing didn't bother me that much but I liked the action and the backgrounds were very nice.
Then the show lost me once

I was discussing this kind of thing with duckroll earlier and I have to wonder if A-1 pictures pictures are stretching themselves too thin with the vast amount of projects that they're undertaking. I have to assume that their main focus at the moment is on Sword Art Online.
Girl is so awesome she only needs to do one move.

That's some really impressive, I suppose one would call it technology. It essentially eliminates the need for anyone to work on the inbetween frames. Fascinating.
I was thinking the same thing myself. I mean looking at Magi and the hackjob being done there too not only on the writing level but also production standpoint, it really seems there is a focus on quantity and not quality. We'll see if Shin Sekai recovers though.
Production IG is another one where it seems they might have pushed themselves too far. I mean we have a solid production visually in the form of Robotics;Note and then Psycho-Pass where it seems they're not even getting half of what R;N is getting.

Well last year they managed to pull of Usagi Drop and Blood C at the same time without too much hassle.
It really is that impressive! Some people reacted to that short expressing that they should have gone the whole way making it draw as 2D figures only, but as the video in the article that Branduil linked to demonstrates (that it was part of that panel materials), even after the "pencil" tracing retouches and else to make it look like that, it seems like the process is still much less time consuming overall. It is a very good looking middle-ground that I want to see them expand!
I noticed the way she acted too at the time. It's always been in the back of my mind that the behavior one might have expected here was already presented when Touga deflowered her in his duel way back. Never had that much confidence in that observation so never really brought it up though.

Interesting. I'd definitely like to give this a rewatch at some point, so I'll try to keep that in mind. It seems possible, though.

The plot is definitely thickening. The opening scenes in each episode seem to be building upon the previous ones, and the narration has continued to build a story, but now we see some of the greater questions showing up for the current scenes involving the main cast. I'm interested to see where all of that goes, now that they're being confronted with something so far out of their own world view.
I'm remaining very impressed with the music and sound in this show, too. It really fits the scenes and does a great job at building atmosphere. Coupled with the engaging story and the characters all being very fun to watch, and I'm really enjoying what I've seen so far.

November, 10... but that just passed over in Japan) some could get their hands on a pre-sell opportunity, nearly two weeks in advance, and obtain the book Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt ANIMATION ART WORKS (http://www.gainax.co.jp/goods/psg_g/), that would be like one of the good old 'Groundwork' art-books by GAiNAX... and not only that, as they would also get a exclusive message illustration by Mr. Nishigori with it (as seen here http://www.gainax.co.jp/anime/psg/news/0114.html)!

No no she's only caring while she's around the dwarf. Otherwise she's a soulless robot with no emotions. It's a very dramatic scenario that the show never touched on unfortunately.

Yukari has helmet hair moe. Yayoi showed how incredibly powerful that moe can get.
So season 3 really exists? I need to catch up on season 2. As in watch it.
The world is trying to entertain me from so many directions at once!
Its VERY heartfelt, but it happens to be super saccharine as well as a result.
The only other recent show this genuine is Space Brothers.

I know Soul Eater is on there, so you should watch that. Other than that, not really familiar with Netflix anime. If Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is on there, watch that immediately.
Err... yes, I can tell whether food is raw, cooked properly or burnt?

Netflix isn't great, and most of the stuff they have isn't that new. I know they have Samurai Champloo and FLCL at the very least, both of which are very approachable.

That's not important if you are only interested in the end product.
And the animation scene in Kids on the Slope was for example not that great.
Soul Eater is there, Gurren Lagann is not.
Netflix also has stuffl ike Gunslinger Girl, Desert Punk, Ga Rei Zero, Fullmetal alchemist, Highschool of the Dead, Elfen Lied, Darker then Black, Burst angel, Canaan, Gungrave, Rideback, Air Gear, witchblade, Mushishi, Vandread, Noir, Excel Saga, FLCL. Ah My goddess, Xam'd, Last Exile, clannad, Eden of the East, Kiddy Grade, Oh Edo Rocket, Le chevalier D'eon. So I would say there is quite a lot to find there, and much of it isnt completely awful.

I've got good news and bad news about this weeks episode. The good news is that this is the best episode of Psycho Pass since the first episode. The bad news is that the shows obvious weakness have yet to be addressed in a satisfying manner. Perhaps I should start with the positive before moving onto the negative, just like a good games review would.
For those of us who have been bothered by the writers need to constantly have other characters explain basic concepts of the shows' universe to Akane it was no doubt a relief that none of that was present in the script this week. Perhaps that not actually a positive, rather it's the absence of a negative. I'll have to try harder.
Okay, lets try again. I found that the story told this episode was relatively engaging and the direction was completely competent. Kogami worked out what was going using actual detective-y type stuff, such as paying attention to details and looking for inconsistencies. I suppose this is basically more of what we had last week, but at least this weeks episode was far less boring than this weeks because it had a very simple "hunt the bad guy" structure to it and it didn't involve weird, unexplained virtual worlds and anticlimactic action sequences. Kogami's detective work does, unfortunately, lead into one of the series' major problems: characterisation.
So Pyscho-Pass is a show with an ensemble, I know this because all the promotional art has some other characters posing in cool poses. Unfortunately, that's pretty much all they do in the show as well. I understand that it can be a little difficult to flesh out an ensemble cast and tell a story at the same time but I don't even feel like they're trying. It's like they decided that Akane and Kogami are the nucleus of the show and so they're the ones having all the attention lavished on them at the moment. The problem is, I don't think they've done enough to make us care about even those characters yet and so the whole show falls rather flat because I don't care about what happens to any of the cast members. It feels vacuous. There's never really much time in the show for them to just chat naturally with each other.
Shows like Tiger and Bunny and Simoun demonstrate the fairly simple formula for building up an ensemble cast - develop the main characters at the start of the show and then have one-off episodes devoted to each of the other characters to flesh them out. I wonder if this is the decision that they will eventually head in.
I can't really avoid talking about the apparent production problems with this episode - any cursory glance at a screencap will reveal a vast number of off-model or "derpy" looking characters. This might distract some people but I just got used to it.
One benefit of not having the usual artists work on this episode was that the lighting wasn't the usual 'characters look like Zombies' harsh white light. Instead they seemed to have gone for a naturalistic style where characters just appear as they might given the locations that they're in, see the image above. It shouldn't have to take a change of staff for the lighting in a show to not look awful, but there you go.
There's not much to say about the actual direction, cinematography and the like this week because it was all very average. Normally I'd complain about how safe they play it but after experiencing the experiment that A-1 tried on From the New World I'm glad this was merely average rather than awful. There was one scene where I thought they were actually doing something with the visual storytelling. In this shot:
Akane is really concerned about the person who has been murdered and it's clearly getting to her where as Kogami hasn't let it phase him at all. I thought this might be reflected in the fact that she's all blurry and uncertain where as he's sharp and clear but after examining some other scenes:
it's pretty clear the director was just putting the focus on the character whose talking to draw attention to the fact that they are speaking rather than to highlights their psychological state.
Oh yeah, there was one small touch I liked which is that when Akane was having her conversation with old guy about highschool philosophy she immediately went to look up information about the subject on the internet rather than hold a conversation, which is pretty classic behaviour from people who have lived with Wikipedia.

It's mostly the staying up extremely late part. Hard to concentrate on game due to being tired, and when I get up my head hurts from getting very little sleep.

They have a few shows that I plan to watch. I'd appreciate it if you could surface certain things a little easier, though. I didn't even know that they had Gunslinger Girl, until it suddenly appeared in my recommendations.
Its a fairly popular series, whereas several more obscure shows are represented on Netflix that probably hardly anyone watches.
It probably also cost considerably more than those shows nobody is watching.
Yes, licensing is no doubt a real issue considering that Netflix isnt heavy on anime.

I think it was before but the licensing for it expired. Not uncommon for Netflix stuff, as there's a wave of stuff (mostly Funi's) that's gonna expire within the next few days and be removed from Netflix.
Guess I gotta watch the first season someday now!
