Fallout 3 and New Vegas mod discussion

If I were to pick one, which one would be best for modding? FO3 or FONV?

Also, I've never really messed with mods before, do people usually play a vanilla round once first and THEN do mods?

I always do that so I know what I want to change and what can be improved and what not.

I usually play vanilla for a while, then add mods as I feel like it. Most people probably aren't gonna play the game twice so why gimp themselves? I don't use my little pony mods or weird stuff so it doesn't make a big difference lore-wise.

As someone new to modding you may want to check out GophersVids on Youtube. He has series on Fallout New Vegas, Fallout 3, and Skyrim. It has a real basic tutorial on how to install mods, and then goes on to show you how to install and set up some of the more popular mods for each game.

Edit: Definitely don't hesitate to mod textures and the UI though even on your very first play through.

I tend to stick with vanilla for a while and then start modding. I'll grab graphical enhancements first and use them right away but I won't use anything that changes the gameplay or adds content because I've found out they break the game quickly since it's all bonus xp and bonus items/weapons.

The OP seems to recommend downloading Fallout Mod manager, but a tutorial I found suggests Nexus mod manager.

So which one should I be using (for New Vegas)?

For New Vegas Nexus Mod Manager. Somebody else is going to need to answer for FO3, but a quick scan through Nexus looks like you should be fine using it for both games.

NMM used to be shit but i've been using it for a while now and have only had 2 problem with 2 minor mods not installing properly

Thanks, much appreciated.

I've previously had a nightmare of an experience trying to mod Oblivion. Followed tutorials and the thread here on Gaf specifically, and still managed to break the game, forcing a reinstall, twice!

Had a much better experience modding Skyrim thanks to Steam's mod shop. Based on the two or three videos I've seen thus far, it seems modding New Vegas is less convoluted than Oblivion (I hope so anyway).

Both FOMM and NMM make it really easy to safely install and uninstall mods. The one you use is up to your preference, since they both work pretty much the same. I'd start with NMM, since that's the one that keeps getting updated.

So if I download a mod though the NMM should it automatically work once I activate the mod? I tried installing the mod using the manager but I noticed it didn't change the fallout3.ini file correctly so I changed the value in that, and I haven't noticed any change in my game when I run Fallout 3.

What am I missing?

EDIT: Of course launching it one more time after posting this did the trick. :P Nevermind.

Argh I do not understand how to mod! I am trying to try out whats in OP..but reading I need some archive invalidation thing? What else do I need? I am using some mod manager from nexus...

Don't worry, this is my position almost one year ago when I tried to mod Oblivion.

For starters, use the nexus mod manager and install the mod one by one (and read the readme of each mod). That way, when there's a problem you can easily identify it and look for a solution.

There are plenty of youtube videos out there to help with that. Might be easier seeing someone else do it. The search string "new vegas mod manager" seems to bring up a ton of relevant stuff.

I should just be able to slam the texture packs over the data folder right? Without using FOMM or anything? When I did so the game crashes upon 'New Game' which is major sadface, I just uninstalled and re-installed it from scratch for now...

FWIW I extracted both the NMC texture pack and the max bumpmap one.

I really like the Project Reality weather mod but it has it's buggy moments that bring my performance down by about 25+frames. It doesn't even need to rain or snow. Just walking around the wasteland and frames drop. I know it's more demanding than Nevada Skies, but I didn't know it would kill my performance in strange spots. Back to Nevada Skies I go

I am going to forget mods exist..like FOSE...why do I need it and why do I need to run the game from it? For NMC texture pack, does it only work in the non DLC? And the archive invalidation thing?

FOSE stands for Fallout Script Extender - it basically expands the scripting system in FO3, allowing for more sophisticated mods. You don't have to use it of course, but you'll miss out on some great mods. Iirc NMC has (at least some?) support for the DLC content, as well.

Game ran like butter before mods.

After mods...crashes upon start up and I think the culprit is FOSE.

Really hating on mods..I mean this is my PC setup

i7 3770K 3.4ghz
8GB of ram
GTX 670

So its not that I can't handle it...

what else would cause it to crash upon start up? I have to use FOSE_loader.exe right?

Is it crashing when you start with the normal executable?

You mean before modding? Yea I created my character and everything..ran it maxed everything on W7...in my rage I deleted the game and in process of re-downloading it. I didn't think of trying to run it without using the loader (which in instructions says I have to use for majority of the mods) (with mods installed).

I guess...I am screwed.

I really think you should just watch GophersVids tutorials on whichever game you are playing (FO3 or FONV) and start out with the mods he is recommending. He provides links in the descriptions for where to download them, shows you how to download them, how to install them, and how to set them up in a step by step fashion. And all the mods he uses are relatively stable. Obviously you can skip any of them except FOSE. FOSE is pretty important for a lot of the better mods these days.

And it's in the FO3 list but not in the FONV list so here's the video on how to use NMM

Edit: IT's also not a bad idea to run the game after every few mods just to make sure it's working, and if it stops working it will be a lot easier to pinpoint where the problem is.

These seem to be pretty awesome links. Thanks!

ARGH...even reinstalled it is now crashing..even with multicore fix.

Damnit there is residue from last install..so screwed. Should have never modded..why can't I just play it..I should have when it was running instead of trying to mod it.

Steam version? Try validating the cache. Right click on game > properties > local files > verify integrity of game cache

If it crashes upon startup 99% of the time your load order is wrong.

Some things you should be doing which are common sense to most people who've modded beth games:

1. load FOSE, not the shortcut in steam or whatever
2. Before running the game, run the program BOSS . Check to see everything is ordered right (boss will do most of this for you except for unknown mods)
3. Use FO3Edit to make sure you don't have any conflicts or missing dependencies (it also will tell you)

fose won't crash your game, bad loadorders do

After spending the past couple hours fiddling with the mods until I finally got everything to work, I can firmly confirm that this man speaks the truth. My mod order was all jacked up. I fixed it and the game no longer crashes on startup now.

weeeeee

Well I purged and found stuff and redownloaded. Now it works..

SO what should I do now exactly?

Step one, run the fallout loader just to create the fallout ini file (basically, run the fallout loader, set your graphic settings, a close it)

Step two, make sure FOSE is installed correctly (drag all the files into the folder where your fallout exe is located).

Step three, open up nexus mod manager. Choose the proper folder (FO3 or NV).

Step four, click on tools and make sure "archive invalidation" has a check near the box.

Step five, run Boss. Arrange your mods in the order boss tells you to.

Finally, go back to NMM. Click on the little arrow near "run fo3/NV" and chage it to "run FOSE/NVSE"

Is there an easy way to respec points in NV? I put a bunch of points into sneak because I told myself I wouldn't do my typical guns/lock pick thing but sneaking seems pretty pointless.

Nope. I don't know if its just not possible or nobody has made one, but I spent an absurdly long time looking for a re-spec mod when I played through New Vegas a couple of months ago. You are going to manually change what you want through the console.

Fellout is brilliant.

I don't want to mod it too much but I'll check out other small mods before delving deep into the game again.

I like Nevada Skies a little better, specially because Fellout doesn't work with the DLC locations, but yeah, it's pretty good.

So running FOSE disables online and cheevos?
Yes because FOSE hooks into the exe, which is partly what xlive.dll protects against.

But it doesn't matter because:

1. you can add in commands to give yourself all the achievements
2. there's no multiplayer and it's launched through steam so who cares, you can still chat with your friends.

Having some pretty bad stuttering issues with FO3. Just bought it, but it stutters even using adaptive v-sync and turning on or off the in game v sync. 580/2600k@4.2 with no mods installed.

I just watched this a few minutes ago. Hopefully it can help with that.

I posted this in the OT but i think i'll have a better chance at getting an answer here.

What exactly does the "data files" option in the launcher mean/do? Should all of the DLC be checked? If so, why do I need to check those boxes if the DLC already shows as loaded in the game? When I click DLC from the menu, everything is listed, and I think I have the quests already actually in the game.

Also, I tried installing the Enhanced Shaders mod. I downloaded it and copied the files to the directory like the readme said to do...but I couldn't tell a difference in game. Is there something I'm missing?

Yes, have all those boxes checked at all times. Without that, the game just doesn't load the DLC content.

As for the enhanced shaders mod, I think you have to press shift+F12 to enable it as with every ENB mod, but I'm not sure.

Even following the video the game crashes...oh well guess no mods.

I guess I wasn't clear the first, but does this only happen when you start the game via FOSE or does it happen with the standard executable as well? It could be you are missing some .dll and that is what is causing the crash.

Ona fresh reinstall..I started. Game started and I created..I even got to megaton. Than I installed FOSE..did same thing with new character. Than I followed the video guide guy had me install FWE and MMM..thats the video I am talking about.

I was able to play the game fine til than.

Which .exe are you using the FOSE one or the default one? FOSE just adds some .dll and and new .exe it doesn't overwrite anything. Can you go into the FO3 folder and launch from the standard .exe in there and see what happens?

The game runs the same as normal with FOSE..FOSE doesn't do anything but add more scipts. Its crashing either from FWE or MMM. It may be my internet download or something..I will just try again when I get my own place. For now I am gonna do New Vegas with just a slow experience mod.

Is the fose download in the OP the most up to date version? Looking at some iron sights and crosshair mods i see I'm going to need it. Also, do I need anything besides FOMM and FOSE to install the NMC texture pack?

So far so good with fallout mod manager. Running mods for fellout (with brighter nights), streetlights, megaton lights, realistic indoor lights, some green grass, and carry wight 999.
