Fallout 3 and New Vegas mod discussion

The actual download link can be found here

I also highly recommend the settings files a guy posted here.

There seem to be problems running it on ATI hardware, but he's included a temporary fixed dll file in the forum thread that seems to work to at least some extent for people with those cards.

The only bug I've found so far is the Cateye drug effect doesn't work. It also makes night time insanely dark.

The guy who makes the ENB series has released an early version of ENB for New Vegas. You can get it http://enbdev.com/enbseries/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=911&sid=1f686c633d0b9ef170a900a36d04e000. It's early days yet, but someone in that thread posted a tweaked up shader set for it that produced some really great results. Here are some screens I took using that config:
The ones in the ENBDev thread have better settings - some of them have to be seen to be believed.
Some of those pics look amazing, but I feel ENB mods are always overkill in motion. Will test for myself though.

I've hesitated in buying New Vegas due to the reviews of it's bugginess. Is it playable by now or still buggy to all hell?

Stock on PC it's completely playable (although I'd patch it to be able to use 4GB of ram if you're on a 64bit system). There are mods out there that definitely help the situation.

All it all it runs fine.

Cool, thanks. I would be getting it for PC. I don't think I'm ever playing a game published or developed by Bethesda on console ever again.

Cheers!
Apparently so. The awesome looking pics on that thread are from fallout 3. The guy said it worked fine.

Confusingly they're actually NOT from Fallout 3, they are fallout 3 maps running on the New Vegas engine care of the Requiem for the Capital Wasteland mod. Apparently it does work with Fallout 3 as well though.

Cheers!

With the official patches it's pretty solid, and there are several bug fix mods to fix up the remaining small things. I actually don't think it was ever that buggy a game, it just had some very high profile aesthetic glitches along with some QA cock ups on a couple of the patches that led to people jumping to conclusions based on Obsidians' unfortunately poor reputation with that side of things.

Cheers!
I'm not sure if it's working or not! Things seem to look a lot nicer, but maybe it's just my memory. If anyone else tries it can you post a pic from the same spot?

Here's one I prepared earlier.

When I ran it on its own I got a similarly bland look, try using the files that other guy posted to really kick it into gear.

It was always playable and mods fixed a lot of whatever scripting errors remained and whatnot. It's still a Gamebryo engine game, so beware, but it's more than playable.

Oh my god those ENB shots. :|

I want to try it, but I've read that the ENB tends to overheat nVidia's cards... At least the GTA4's enb does.

FOMM (NV) crashes when I go to "Package manager" and enter my login details. :/

Yup. I'm surprised anyone is recommending FOMM anymore, I can't get it to do anything without crashing constantly. It hasn't been updated for quite some time. If you are really dedicated to sticking it out read the comments on the Nexus page for it, users have posted a variety of theoretical solutions to various crashes.

What is the best difficulty increase mod for New Vegas? I have put almost 200 hours into the game but I can never actually finish it. Reason being that once I have tons of loot stashed away it just comes boring to me. I want to play through the game (DLC and all) from the beginning with the most brutal difficulty imaginable... Any suggestions?

Huh, I know Mart's Mutant Mod can be pretty challenging, but I always had enough with the PN difficulty increase, mostly because the core gameplay is really kinda flat...

Maybe you could do some self-imposed challenges, like playing a guy with a crippled leg, or someone that only drinks purified water, stuff like that...

It's far from "brutal" in difficulty, but if you want a considered and fun toughening up of the game rules, try J Sawyer's overhaul mod. He was the director of F:NV, so it's kind of a semi-official patch and a lot of thought was put into it. Things like item weight and player max carry stats are a lot more severe with it, as an example. It needs ALL DLC to work however (including the lame courier's stash stuff).

Oh, if anyone is interested, the ENB guy released a new version of ENB New Vegas. It's version 116, but confusingly he also released a new version since then that he uploaded with the same, so if you got 116 already you might want to download it again as it apparently fixed a few bugs. One thing that's not so good with it is that apparently he can't support imagespace modifiers in F:NV, so stuff that alters the screen output doesn't and probably will never work (i.e. times when the screen is supposed to fade to black, the Cateye item effect, etc).

Is his mod good for a first playthrough? Is it even fun? Looking at some of the changes he's made, some seem pretty overkill and like they would detract more than they add. I've played about 20 hours but am considering restarting because I haven't played in over a year, and this is the mod I'm looking at using.

I've only briefly used it as at the time I was near the end of two different games, and it's a mod that only really makes sense to use from the start. I'm also heavily involved in modding at the moment, but after that I'm really excited to do a complete playthrough with it as much of the changes make a lot of sense.

The biggest problem with all the Bethesda family RPGs is the abundance of absolutely everything (money, weapons, experience points, abilities, etc) and how quickly the games just become pointless as a result. He's greatly decreased the level cap, which was desperately needed (I can't think of anything more boring than playing these games at max level where it's basically god mode), made it way less common to find random loot, made you have to think a lot more carefully about what items you take and where, and made hardcore mode actually a serious factor in playing. All these things are fine in my book.

If it's anything like PN, which it seems to be, then sure. Play with the mod on normal difficulty and it'll be pretty great.

Are you a Skyrim modder or a Fallout 3/FNV modder?

Also, I was thinking about doing some videos on some good Fallout New Vegas mods, but this other channel started doing it before I did. Would any of you consider it "copying them" if I start doing Fallout New Vegas Mod Spotlights too?

Both of our channels mainly focus on Skyrim mods, but I'd like to branch out to other moddable games too. I tried Minecraft, but ohboy is that community rotten to the core. Offered to help one guy with a trailer of his new Minecraft Map and got hit with hate so fast... /endwhining

I don't know about copying, but if you're gonna promote the same mods as they do, your videos might not have much of a real use. Maybe finding more obscure mods, doing only lore friendly, crazy mods (like that dancing gun), etc. might earn you a niche or your own...

Well, I would avoid doing the same mods as they review, but its more like a meta thing.
I try to do the same thing with Skyrim mods, but in the end we kinda overlap each other because there are so many good mods for Skyrim. I try to focus on the mods that get less attention, but usually those get boosted to the hot files page, and those are the mods they mainly focus on.

They reviewed a couple of FNV mods, and I just don't want to be seen as copying them because all of a sudden I start doing FNV mod videos, even though I did a couple back in like October lol.

Major crash issues. Right at the beginning at the birthscene:

Option 1 (1st try): After the parents congratulate my gender, they freeze and the dialogue ends.
Option 2: After the squishy sound effect, it never transitions from the blank screen.
Option 3 (last try): Freezes right after I select my gender.

God damn it. This might take the cake as the most frustrating modding experience ever. I cannot list every single variable my computer has so heres the list of mods.

Also installed:
Archiveinvalidation Invalidated (it has problems being in the Program Files folder?)
Stutter Remover (I thought it would solve Option 1)
Color Map/MIUI
FOSE
Owned
Re-Animated

Options 2 and 3 began when I installed Stutter Remover and the ESB profile. It says it has problems with MSI Afterburner and I quit that.

I think you need to set it to use multiple cores. At least it sounds like the problems I had before I did that.

Maybe it's because I'm on an ATI, but even "Nevada Skies" made the night time straight up impossible to navigate without bumping up my monitor's gamma, which in turn ruined the day. Still haven't found a decent weather mod that doesn't screw night level design, which sucks because I love the Night Person perk.

This is why you get the electro city mod! The two work really well together.

You can get a darkness adjuster on the same page with Nevada Skies so you can turn it up without effecting the days.

Don't do that before trying out the electro city mod, though. It really does add a ton of atmosphere. The main roadways between towns, and towns themselves etc are all well lit, and you get a real sense of venturing out into the unknown if you leave the main roads.

I fixed my freezing problems - I had to enable threaded AI. Anyway, I now have questions about FWE and combat/healing.

First, I set X to bullet time to separate it from VATS (it's useful for sniping), but it's now fixed to both BT and triage, and when I press it twice and go through the menu options my action points don't regenerate. I want to disable triage and keep the BT toggle on X. I thought I've disabled both though and it's still broken.

Second, the sprint key makes it unable to walk while sneaking except for using caps lock to toggle, which I don't like. I want to use shift to run, control to crouch, and alt to walk. There's no "walk" key in the default settings, so what do I do?

Third, sleeping. There's 5 options to choose from and I don't know which one I want. I like the hardcore aspect of requiring sleep but I still want to heal all the way.

FWE seems really, really complex and I don't know if I want to use eveything. I like the alternative start, more powerful/accurate weapons, and the hardcore stuff used in New Vegas, but that's pretty much it. Am I better off downloading separate mods instead of FWE? Which ones do I want?

Nah, FWE is very well done and easy to set up. It's maybe a little more effort than the usual mod, but it's worth it.

Any fixes for this save game not loading nonsense. I did the whole start a new game, get passed the doctor, load the new game, then load your original game. But that's tedious. I have the steam version so I verified the cache as well. If I can't load the game when I get home I might just uninstall and reinstall overnight.

I don't think it will help you now, but Fallout 3 had a huge problem with screwing up saves and the best solution was to use CASM. Obviously won't fix your currently broken saves though.

I was never able to fix the corrupted saves in FO3, I just always had to go back to my previous save.

Well the saves do load after the new game thing. It's just annoying.

I cant stop staring at those shots along with some of the enb pictures that some of the users here have put up. I wonder if my pc is capable of running that

Two last mod problems and I think I'll be satisfied.

1. I installed Project Beauty and now I have this for all human NPCs:

It could be a load order problem but I followed all of the guides and have this:

2. I can't unpack the NFC texture pack, even after carefully following his instructions. I always get this error message:

3. Performance is really under par even with these specs (Radeon 6850, i3 2100, 4GB). The fucked up thing is, Skyrim runs better. It's impossible to have a steady 60 fps on high/ultra settings at 1080p/2440p with AA off. There must be something wrong, besides being a shitty engine (I hope).

Man some of those ENB shots are godly...

That's a missing texture error. Try to uninstall Project Beauty with FOMM and check the readme for troubleshooting. Your installation probably got botched somewhere. Try redownloading, reinstalling, verifying cache (if on Steam), etc.

No idea on points 2 and 3, sorry.

I can't seem to get the Flora overhaul mod to work correctly. Basically, the flora is all the same as it was beforehand. I installed everything to the Data folder too, so I'm not sure what's missing.

About the delve into New Vegas for the first time. Are those texture mods and ENB shader in the OP still the ones to go for?

Also, can you mix NMC's texture mod with other mods, like the Wasteland Flora Overhaul?

I am about to replay New Vegas, I have already beaten it before so this is just because I am bored / steam achievement whoring. Should I be adding both Project Nevada and A World of Pain? Does it break the game/ do they clash with each other?

NMC yes, the enhanced shaders I'm not sure, there's those new ENB shaders that just came up, so you might want to check them out. And yup, they're probably compatible, if maybe they step a bit on each other (Flora Overhaul over NMC, since I think NMC doesn't even use an .esp).

I dunno about A World of Pain, I don't like mods that add monsters, but yes, PN is worth it all the way. I think there's a compatibility patch between the two of them you have to install.

I need help with the mod order, I don't know what I've done wrong.
The game crashes, sometimes when I change map, sometimes it just... does.

You ran this through BOSS right?

edit:

I feel like you can't run OWB (no cyber) if you also have cyberware. Get the normal OWB one if there is one.
