I am getting the game from Blockbuster soon. Any general tips and tricks for me? I'm mostly in it for the story and the world, I'd like to make combat it as painless as possible. Thanks. (360 version so I won't have access to any mods.)

Also is playing without VATS a realistically viable option?

You can play without VATS if you use iron sights. Recruit Boone. He'll take care of enemies in a very nice way. Add E-DE too and you'll find combat fairly easy.

Thanks. Whereabouts do I find those guys and can they die?

E-DE is found in Primm early in the game.

You need a science check of 55, followed followed by repair skill of 35

Or

Repair skill 65

Or

1 scrap electronics, 3 scrap metals and sensor modules.

Boone can be found in Novac.

(Companion permadeath is only for hardcore mode. Otherwise, they get "knocked out" and get up again after a little while.)

Yep.

You can do that with fallout 3 too, there's a ironsights mod but it's not perfect.

It's good to be playing this game again.

When do you exactly get the hotel room for free in Novac? I have gotten Boon as an companion right now...
and the chick is dead that manages the hotel
..so how do I get it?

Talk to the guy in the dino. You have to have a rep in Novac above at accepted or above I think.

Enjoy =D I'd say focus on small guns as your primary weapons. Most widely accessible type in both of my playthroughs, through quests, random loot, etc. so combat shouldn't be too much of a fuss.

And I think playing without VATS is definitely viable thanks to the ironsights. Though VATS can be hilariously fun when you start to get a hold of some decent hardware, especially the headshots :lol
Guess do the repconn and cattle quests to get rep?
Yep, both boost your Novac rep.

By small guns you mean like pistols?
Shit, yeah, what Lancehead said. You'll see a "Guns" skill that you'll be able to put points into. Which basically covers everything. Pistols, SMG's, assault rifles, rocket launchers, etc. Past Fallout games had it split up into Small Guns and Big Guns (Big Guns was like rocket launchers or minguns) but NV combined them into the one skill.

I've been replaying Fallout 3 so I wasn't thinking of the differences in NV :p

The shooting seems to be more effective in NV for me. I rarely used VATS when playing NV where I would use almost nothing but VATS when playing FO3. I like that they beefed up the 10mm also.

How about a yee-haw for law and order in the town of - error, token not found."

Thank Christ I was lazy as hell before leaving Primm to advance towards Nipton/Novac in the very early part of the game. I didn't feel like hunting down candidates for Primm's new sheriff and decided to reprogram the town robot instead. I made that decision maybe 50 or so game play hours ago, and it has made listening to Radio New Vegas awesome. =) Everytime I hear the above on the radio I just laugh.

I'm like 15 hours into the game playing on Very Hard with Hardcore mode on, I also downloaded that JSawyer mod. Is there any way to make the game even harder?

Playing this on PC, wow it is such a massive improvement in performance compared to the PS3 version. Now I don't know how I played so many hours of Fallout 3/ New Vegas on consoles with much longer load times, blurrier textures and a bad framerate.

I have all of the DLC this time which I didn't before. From reading this thread it looks like I can tackle it early? I'm Only level 7 or 8. Wouldn't mind some cool new toys before I continue with the main story. Which one should I do first? Also looking through this and the mod thread to see what the must-have mods are. Mostly interested in visual tweaks.

I think Honest Hearts would be the easiest to do at a low level.

Damn, I totally fucked up Honest Hearts. Not very happy with how volatile the quest structure is for the add on. I don't even recall killing any friendlies either, must have hit someone with crossfire and pulled aggro.

Whoops.

You probably shot Follows-Chalk at the beginning thinking he was with the ambush party. I know I did.

Thanks, I'll try that one out first.

One of my saves got corrupted and I got stuck in an infinte loading screen. Thankfully I had another save from not too far back, but for the future, is there anything I can do to prevent this problem from happening? I've only been playing for 10 hours and I already got a corrupted save, what's up with that? My framerate got all crappy and I decided to restart, and was then stuck with infinite loading.

Also, what's a good stopping point for leveling my Guns skill? I want it to be high but if diminishing returns set in, I'd like to put my points elsewhere.

Might be a stupid piece of advice, but have you tried loading your save from the save menu? Using "continue" gave me the infinite loading problem at times...

Yeah I did this, but I loaded a save from just slightly earlier instead of trying out the corrupted one. Are corrupted saves a common problem? Happened to a friend too.

Try loading the earlier working save then the newer "corrupted" save. from within the game on the older save This happens a lot.

Well, after returning the game twice, and eventually buying it for $20 AUD new (Ultimate edition, too) I beat it, and all the DLC.
Dead Money was absolutely horrible. I've played some shitty DLC in my time (LOS comes to mind) but there was nothing good about Dead Money. I never once had fun. The cloud toxins pre casino was stupid, I was always annoyed at the stupid collar-radio shit. The story wasnt touching at all, and
Father Elijah
could see me even with 100 sneak + stealth boy + sneak suit MKII fully upgraded.

Loved the rest, especially Old World Blue. Funny story, after trading this in again (stupid ps3 issues) and rebuying it the last time, I had no lock ups freezes or issues.

Loved New Vegas over all (even counting the horrible freezing and lock ups I had previously), but Dead Money will never get played through again by me. Got all the trophies too, just so I'd have NO inclination to go through again.

Oh, and there seems to be an issue going from Vanilla NV to Ult NV. I loaded a save from vanilla on my Ultimate, and the Legion hates me. Even after getting the
mark the absolves all past transgressions
. Started a new save and zero issues.

I loved Dead Money. The DLC basically remakes New Vegas into a survival horror game for a little while. I hope Bethesda does a similar DLC for Fallout 4.

I've seen wildly varying opinions on Dead Money, seems kinda divisive.

I pretty much hated it, but some people seem to love it.

My favourite was easily Old World Blues. Nice dialogue and some interesting lore combined with a neat place to explore and some nice loot. Also enjoyed Lonesome Road. Didn't have the same kind of wide open place to explore like OWB, but I enjoyed the story and the information you get on your character's past.

Honest Hearts was pleasant overall thanks to Joshua Graham as a character and some background lore (<3 the survivalists caches). The quests were mediocre at best, though.

So funny that background information can be such a big plus in a game. I honestly think Fallout has one of the most interesting universes ever in gaming. I just love learning about the difference factions, about the America/China conflict, learning about people who lived before the great war, or people that were living right after the bombs hit, the supermutants, ghouls. It's all so fascinating to me.

I agree completely. It's one of the few reasons why Fallout 3 got me into the series as a whole. There's something really great about stumbling into a random building and finding out there was a story to it. It's like being an archaeologist.

I have never experienced this, but I don't know if it is related but I pretty much have auto-saving off.

Resting, off.
Traveling, off.
Loading, off.

I do use quick-save and manual saves..I never override when manual saving. I always make new (I also don't over write a quick-save) saves and delete older ones as I go.

The game does not get enough credit for its writing. Its very rare a videogame has funny writing but this nails it. The Yes Man especially not to mention The TOASTER! as he would describe himself.

Old World Blues is one of the reasons I'm excited for Wasteland 2. OWB is apparently one big homage to Wasteland 1 which I never played, so I'm hoping W2 can provide similar sort of craziness.

Spoilers for characters and events at the BLACK MOUNTAIN location!!!

--------------------------------

About 60 hours into my playthrough, I visited Black Mountain for the first time. And this was after having listened extensively to the hilarious Black Mountain radio station. I am really confused about one aspect of the Black Mountain community / radio crew. In the radio broadcasts, "Best Friend Tabitha" had lengthy conversations with her co-host "Rhonda."

Rhonda sounded like a ghoul, or some kind of mutant. Either way, every so often "Raul Tejada" would join the broadcast, and they would mention how he's a slave who's execution is being delayed until he can fix something. Now that I think about it, I don't remember if they explicitly ever mentioned on the air what Tejada was supposed to fix.

ANYWAY, so I visit Black Mountain, and I find a maintenance robot in a storage shed. I fix the robot, and the robot tells me that it hasn't talked to its owner in 5+ years. I exit the storage shed. As I go outside, I am immediately greeted by Tabitha, and she says something along the lines of "Yes, Rhonda, you've finally been fixed! Thank you stranger for fixing my robot Rhonda!"

What am I missing here? Who was Tabitha's co-host and why was Tabitha calling her Rhonda, if the real Rhonda was a broken robot?

edit: I made this post because I wanted to avoid accidental spoilers while googling this... but I went ahead and read the wikia.com page about this anyway and lol. Tabitha was interviewing herself and pretended to be Rhonda. Good god.

Rhonda broke. Raul made his way to Black Mountain after hearing a fuzzy radio broadcast and fixed some stuff for Tabitha. Tabitha, slowly growing more insane without Rhonda (one of the terminals shows how she now hears Rhonda's voice), holds Raul captive to fix Rhonda.

Just happened to check out this thread and see this. I actually got the infinite loading problem a couple days ago except it was happening with ALL my saves. However, I rebooted my machine and suddenly all of them were working just fine. I don't think it's the save itself that gets corrupted, just some sort of Windows 7 bug? either way, try a computer reboot if that happens.

Dead Money does force different play styles from the majority of New Vegas, but I find it mostly entertaining. Sneaking around early has lead me to having a surplus of survival items so I have no issues with combat or the poison clouds. I the game would benefit from keeping the
ghost harvesters as unkillable. I was terrified of them (mostly for wasting bullets) until I realized I could just KO them and shot their heads off.

I want to actually play Honest Hearts at some point, but because of how volatile the quest structure is I have to say it is one of the worst pieces of content I've played. It is just way to easy to fuck up everything and basically have nothing left to do but crawl through the map. I basically just killed everyone and stole everything and left.

The
Ghost people
of Dead Money would've been better if they actually set traps for players or acted intelligently at all. They were basically fodder. The mood was still amazing though.

I think it would work if they're just
unkillable and super strong
. I'm not sure making them seem intelligent is the right direction, I felt they were more aimless monsters. They lose most of their purpose when you know how to permanently disable them. Unfortunately this is a side effect of the variety in player play styles as that would be completely unfair to the peasants that don't have max stealth.

Just started Honest Hearts. Ted Masterton = Lee from The Walking Dead game. Nice. Pretty psyched to play all of the DLC for the first time, this game is so good.

Is it normal for
everyone to die in the first ambush?
. Damn.
