Famitsu Japan sales week 47: PS5 and XSX/S second week

Sony is close to singing this, too.
Well, Sony just announced they had the best console launch in gaming history (we don't know the amount, we only know it's over 2.1M basically with only preorders) and that the console is sold out everywhere. So no, Japan is just a small country for them so sent a small shipment for that country and got sold out fast like in the other countries.

Nintendo already kill nextgen Xbox and Playstation 5 hype with their potato hardware
No, they are supply limited worldwide. Not sure about XSX, but PS5 is sold out in Japan and Sony said that since launch they won't receive new units worldwide until mid next month.

Do you know any store with available units? Do you know any console with a higher worldwide launch than PS4/PS5? Please post a link with a reliable source backing why Sony is supposed to lie instead of a meme.

Because by doing so you look like a dumb fanboy troll with nothing to back your opinion.

Graphics are seriously at a point now where they are good enough no matter what you play on.

Switch games look great. PS4 games look great.
SX and PS5 are even better but people really should be happy with the level of graphics we are getting now, and things are only getting better.

Nintendo with PS4 level tech will be a sight to see, judging by the stuff they pull off with Switch tech. Hell Nintendo was making gorgeous stuff last gen as well.

Nintendo really does great games, graphics alone means nothing, I agree, but honestly I'm not happy with the tech inside the latest Nintendo consoles, starting from the Wii. The last Nintendo console I loved was GameCube, since that I was left with a bad taste in my mouth. I have a Switch, but after Super Mario Odyssey and Splatton2 I lost interest. I somehow consider Nintendo like Sony, great exclusive games, more innovations and originality, I just miss a powerful home console from Nintendo, just that.

Do you know that Jim is only talking PR BS and most of the consoles are bought by Fucking Scalpers evidence look at eBay and their pics form ps5 stacked together
Scalpers are only a tiny portion of the sales, there aren't over 2M consoles in Ebay and similar and it would be dumb to think that it could be the case.

The console being sold out everywhere is a fact. There is no reason to think Jim saying they expect to sell more units this fiscal first year compared to what they sold during the same period as in PS4, or when Sony said the PS5 launch outsold PS4. It's also a fact that PS4 had the best launch in gaming history. So it's a fact that PS5 had the best worldwide launch in gaming history.

And you can't prove with any source that they are lying with these things/that they are bullshit. It's your personal opinion / conspiracy theory.

Next year is going to be very harsh for PS5.

Monster Hunter Rise - 4 million seller
Mario 3D world Deluxe - 1.5 million seller
New Pokemon Remake - 3 million seller

And bunch of 200K-500K sellers
Shin Megami Tensei 5
Rune Factory 5
Bayonetta 3
Story of the season
Bravely Default 2

You mean next year? The year they are releasing a Final Fantasy, Resident Evil and Gran Turismo? ummmm ok. I don't see them hurting next year bud.

The same folks that will buy a Nintendo handheld for the titles listed clearly bought em for SMTIV, Bravely Default series, Monster Hunter etc. So why pretend its going to be "harsh" for PS5 when the same argument that could be made for PS4 clearly is being made for PS5? Be like saying "going to be a very harsh year for Switch" (Proceeds to list the very same series that helped the last Nintendo systems) So the folks in Japan that care about those titles on Nintendo systems will buy them no different then the folks that care about GT, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy etc would buy a PS that did last generation.

Its a moot point.

Unfortunatelly, Japan is really not that important of a market for Playstation.

PlayStation 5 is not just the biggest console launch in PlayStation history – but also the entire industry. And yet the tiny island is just a fraction of those sales.
Don't huff your own fumes lol.

Momotaro is the biggest 3rd party launch on the Switch, it's already the 6th best selling 3rd Party game on the Switch physically.
To put into perspective there is only 5 PS4 games that have launched higher than Momotaro:
  1. Monster Hunter World (Capcom) - 1.350.412
  2. Dragon Quest XI (Square Enix) - 950.338
  3. Final Fantasy XV (Square Enix) - 716.649
  4. Final Fantasy VII (Square Enix) - 702.853
  5. Kingdom Hearts III (Square Enix) - 640.406
  6. Metal Gear Solid V (Konami) - 315.288
It's also the biggest launch Konami has had in the last decade, and likely to become their best selling game in the last 20 years.
Because it's not a JRPG but rather a family party game it will end up outselling anything on the PS4 bar Monster Hunter World.
A good comparison for lifetime sales is Super Mario Party. Since they are both on the same system targeting similar demographics.
As I expect that Momotaro will follow a similar sales curve, thus it should eventually hit 1.5 million in Japan.
  • Similar Price
  • Launched in October vs November
  • Same Genre
  • Didn't get additional updates to drive sales
There is plenty of rational reasons to expect Momotaro to become the first million selling Japanese 3rd Party on the Switch and to do so fairly quickly. Lets look at t Super Mario Party's launch holiday, it only launched with 126K sales in its October launch week. Below are the sales of Super Mario Party during the holidays when Nintendo ships large amount of hardware to Japan:
  • W 50 2018: Super Mario Party - 97.529
  • W 51 2018: Super Mario Party - 155.060
  • W 52 2018:Super Mario Party - 98.682
  • W 1 2019: Super Mario Party - 95.102
Super Mario Party TOTAL: 446.373 (58% of Annual Sales)

Lets say Momotaro doesn't achieve the same numbers, instead it has an average of 70K compared to Super Mario Party's 111K average. Thats still 280K physical and would bring total shipped numbers to over 800K for the year, add a conservative 10% digital and we are very close to 1M shipped + digital. The initial shipment of 500K will be sold before Week 50.
  • 2018: Super Mario Party - 764.853
  • 2019: Super Mario Party - 497.862
  • 2020: Super Mario Party - 332.310*
Overall the floor for Momotaro will be higher than PS4 DQXI which finished with 1.36M

It's no conspiracy it's Business ABC To grow hype they talking bullshit and I can proof to you that before the START of PREODERS and RESERVATION and at the Time that it didn't started it was sold out and there are pics of scalpers honouring themselves
I'm still angry at Jimbo

PS4/PS5 will sell below 1 million units this year, PS5 will sell below 1 million units next year. Sony has not sold less than 1 million hardware in Japan since 1994..
They lost majority of AA exclusivity they had in the past due to 3rd Parties preferring the ecosystem.

Right now Nintendo has 85% of both hardware and software market in Japan. As mentioned earlier this hasn't happened since 1994. Event in the Wii/DS era, their previous peak. Nintendo only had like 65% share of the market - the PSP and even PSV did great numbers for third parties.
Between the PS3/PSV Sony sold like 100 million physical software in Japan, right now the PS4 is only around 40 million physical software so serious decline compared to the prior gen. The PS5 will see an additional decline in both software and hardware sales since a lot of the AA exclusives that used to automatically go to the PS3/PS4/PSV are now on the Switch. PS4 was fortunate to compete against 3DS/Wii U - PS5 is facing an uphill struggle for mind-share, a high price and lack of really popular games for the Japanese market..

This will have repercussions for Japanese 3rd Parties - especially as most of Asian markets are trending in a similar direction and Switch is already caught up to the PlayStation in China, which is becoming an increasingly important market for pretty much all game makers. Switch only launched in 2019 in China, and Tencent is their major partner there. Nintendo games don't seem to have much of an issue passing the strict censorship and regulation. You can check but Tencent is a strategic partner or owns shares in a lot of different publishers - you can bet that when Monster Hunter Rise launches China it will become Capcom's most profitable game.

Thats nice but that doesn't mean those who bought Final Fantasy, Resident Evil or GT last generation will suddenly not buy it this generation.

I mean two of the games you mention barely sell more than Momotaro does in its launch week.
That's one of the reasons Resident Evil is expected to launch on the Switch(not talking about the Cloud version). Gran Turismo I already discussed a few days ago:

Gran Turismo isn't going to move a lot of PS5 in Japan... it's a declining IP in a declining genre no longer relevant to the Japanese audience.

Gran Turismo sales in Japan:
GT 5: Prologue (2007) - 533.752
GT 5 (2010) - 731.164
GT 6 (2013) - 367.267
GT 7 (2017) - 269.348

While if you really believe that Final Fantasy will actually launch in 2021, you are more optimistic than me

Yea we'll see a pocket chibi edition of Resident Evil like we saw of FFXV pocket edition, that doesn't mean Japan doesn't buy Resident Evil on Playstation bud. Has nothing to do with selling more than as you might as well argue nothing Nintendo does is good, they don't sell as well as GTAV right?

They sell enough to clearly exist on Playstation. Just like you saw Monster Hunter World, Resident Evil series, Final Fantasy etc.

The fans in Japan that like Handheld will buy the IPs they bought last gen.
The fans in Japan that like Playstation will buy the IPs they bought last gen.

moot.

Are you living in the past?

Resident Evil hasn't been able to crack 1 million in over a decade.
The highest selling Resident Evil games on the PlayStation 4 barely managed to outsell Momotaro's launch week sales. Whether it's a chibi pocket edition or something different doesn't make a difference. Whatever Resident Evil game Capcom manages to launch on the Switch will end up eclipsing the PS5 Resident Evil games. That's simply the case of the Japanese Market which is what we are discussing here.

I'm not saying that the games will cease to exist on the PlayStation console, I'm saying that if a franchise remains exclusive to the PlayStation it would become irrelevant on the Japanese market.

Sony Japan types should be concerned with the Switch performing so we'll technically. Hyrule Warriors looks amazing, better than anything 'NextGen', The Outer Worlds just got a performance upgrade on the Switch as well.
Woah now lol. Hyrule Warriors has nice art direction but it looks like complete shit and drops down to PS2 resolutions. It’s okay if you don’t like realistic graphics but seeing Ghost of Tsushima in 4K/60 or Cold War running at 120fps looks amazing.

Dude I just finished Age of Calamity... the game is nice and all but looks like shit and drops frames to single digits all the time... also looks worse than BoTW. Stop typing nonsense.

7.6M PS4s say otherwise. Nintendo Switch is not its competitor, Xbox is.
The PS4 sold a whopping 9.2M in japan and was outpacing the ps3 until Sony stop supplying stock. They were only sending 2-4k units for months straight despite much higher demand.

The ps5 is severely supply constrained so you can't judge it badly. Demand is big atm.

Surely everyone realizes, on the hardware side, these PS5 numbers are supply constrained.

May be true, but it doesn't bode well for Sony's momentum. They are going to get killed these holidays and they don't really have any big "Japanese" game around the corner. Maybe GT will be the next one to drive sales ??

And PS4 managed to sell 300K in its launch. Sure you can argue no pandemic I guess. Sony is like only half way there, maybe a full month to match their PS4 launch numbers.

Momentum is a thing and Sony is struggling to gain a foothold and its not going to get any easier. Nintendo has some huge bombs they are going to drop and wait if they do a Splatoon 3, MK 9, or Odyssey 2.

Having your hot new console being outsold 3 to 1 is never a good look regardless of supply issues.

Only reason there was enough stock at the PS4 launch was because it came out in Japan three months later than the West.

I don't think Sony will give up in their home market completely. They'll just accept that PlayStation doesn't sell what it used to in that market.

That or perhaps they'll chance a handheld PlayStation again.

Sony sold all the units they had available in Japan.

And in the rest of the world.

They shipped to Japan a small portion of their global shipment because Japan is a small market for Sony. Japan is a shrinking market for console as players keep migrating to mobile. In Japan portables always have been more popular than consoles, so it's normal that Switch does a better job there specially now that Switch it's on its sales peak year, the part of the lifecycle of a console where it sells more, while PS4 is on its sunset stage and PS5 just have been released and it's sold out everywhere with a demand way higher than the supply.

The writing was on the wall.

Anyone shocked? Really?

For one, look at the size of the PS5, the physical size I mean.

I LOVE this stuff.
Look, another fanboy who posts memes as personal attacks because can't back their opinion with facts!

We know Sony shipped worldwide more than 2.1M (we don't know how much exactly) which is what PS4 sold in 2 weeks basically selling out everywhere their launch shipment for each country. We know what they sold in Japan. It isn't a big portion of it, because the main market for Sony is Europe and after that USA, as we can see in their FY reports every year. Same goes for MS, Japan is a tiny country for them. And same goes for most 3rd party companies.

It isn't the case for Nintendo, Japan is way more important for them. It represents a bigger portion of their revenue as we can see in their FY reports.

48K while supply constrained, is very good....

Now, Japan is mostly a mobile gaming country BUT if Sony can get 10 million PS5 sales in Japan, that is a win.
They really need to do some work on expanding content that is aimed at Japan and other Asian audiences.

People who thought the PS5 would make a dent at Nintendo's complete domination of Japan were kidding themselves. Sony is a japanese company in name only, they have punted that market for like 10 years now.

Aside from some odd bump here or there due to a big launch, don't expect to see the PS5 ever outselling the Switch in the weekly charts.

It was just as my friend predicted. Even final fantasy 16 won't make a dent in Japan Switch sales according to him.

He predicts that switch will outsell the PS5 worldwide by the 1st week of December.

Nintendo is not out to dominate just
Japan alone. Nintendo is out for WORLD DOMINATION!! It will be all according to keikaku.

Switch will sell more than PS5 in November and December but with shortages and Switch's momentum I don't think that will surprise anyone.

They could but it's probably not profitable like Nintendo Switch as Sony and Microsoft are eating loss for every PS5 and XSX sold to customer.

Switch alone already made 10 billion USD profits in just 3.5 years on the market while PS4 needed more than 7 years to be in that position.
What's the source of all this info?

The demand thingy was overblown.
PS4 sales situation
Stock problem = ~7K
Normal sales = ~11K

Same can be said to PS5 here, it's just a launch console demand. When Sony just sidelining Japan by allocating piss poor shipments size in the 2nd biggest market for dedicated gaming hardware during holiday month of course we're going to see the outcry of the console demand is bigger than the supply but in reality it isn't that big.

Japanese gamers on the biggest japanese gaming blog already speculated that Sony made a decision to create this artificial scarcity situation in order to portray the new PS console is very popular while purposely sending tiny shipments size.
