2020 H1 TOTAL: 3.102.694
2020 H1 NSW HW: 2.666.882 (86%)
2020 H1 PS4 HW: 435.812 (14%)

2021 TOTAL HW: 3.048.148
2021 TOTAL NSW HW: 2.507.638 (82%)
2021 TOTAL PS4/PS5 HW: 540.510 (18%)

Switch continues to perform far better this year compared to last year with just 160K left before it overtakes the 2020 H1 Total, if it maintains 90K average for the next 6 weeks we are looking at over 3 million hardware sold in 2021 during H1 a 20% increase YoY. This will be the third best Q2 of any device in Japan only behind the peak of the DS

For PlayStation we are noticing the uptick in Hardware but it's fairly clear that this would happen due to the low supply Sony provided last year with 16K PS4 sold on average per week despite a much stronger software lineup that included one million seller - Final Fantasy VII Remake and a bunch of games that surpassed 100K Resident Evil 3, Yakuza 7: Like a Dragon, The Last of Us Part II, Nioh 2, Persona 5 Scramble, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, Trials of Mana, One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4, Granblue Fantasy Versus compared to Nier Replicant, Resident Evil: Village & Scarlet Nexus which will be the only three games that will surpass 100K this year.

Overall PS5 software is where the issue is, as we see Resident Evil: Village failed to surpass 6.9K physical in it's second week, meaning that the active userbase buying games on the PS5 is far lower compared to the Famitsu figures, when even 360 managed to have stronger software sales in it's first 6 months on the market with franchises with far lower heights compared to Resident Evil, it's clear that the PS5 situation is worse than the hardware sales would suggest.

Damn. in Japan it looks like the PS5 have the lowest attach rate in history. even when the PS4 released in Japan it could sell good software numbers like Knack sold 309,304 and Yakuza: Ishin sold 82,540.

So far Resident Evil: Village is still below Resident Evil: VII's launch back in 2017, this was the first major game on the PS5 and it's performance basically confirms most of my hypothesis from last year.
There is not exactly a good lineup for the rest of the summer either, Sony and third parties need to start launching far more games on the PS5 for things to change. Hopefully the China launch helps us to see the actual demand in Japan in the coming months and allows regular consumers to buy one.

The best comparison for the system at this point is the X360, and to me it seems that it had better third party support especially if we don't get some major releases reveled or dated for this year fairly soon. With COVID disrupting development pipelines I'm not very hopeful.

X360 Top Selling Games 2005-2006
  1. Blue Dragon (Microsoft) - 135.240
  2. Dead or Alive 4 (Tecmo) - 103.307
  3. Ridge Racer 6 (Namco) - 72.129
  4. Dead or Alive: Xtreme 2 (Tecmo) - 57.060
  5. Dead Rising (Capcom) - 49.978
  6. Lost Planet: Extreme Condition (Capcom) - 44.854
  7. Ninety-Nine Nights (Microsoft) - 38.019
  8. Rumble Roses XX (Konami) - 29.187
  9. Project Gotham Racing 3 (Microsoft) - 25.058
  10. Culdcept Saga (Bandai Namco) - 23.947
TOTAL: 578.779

Currently only Spider Man: Miles Morales, Demon Souls & Resident Evil: Village have surpassed 40K physical sales on the PS5, I don't think Village will manage 100K this year, ditto for Scarlet Nexus & Tails of Arise, so end of year the Top 10 might be lower than what X360 achieved.
Crazy to think about it but Sony's new system is currently heading for irrelevance in the second biggest dedicated video game market in the World, similar trend is observed in South Korea.

What i can't understand is that the PS5 is actually selling faster than the PS4 in Japan but the games are not selling at all.

PS4 launched later in Japan and no one was in a hurry to support the Wii U at the time.
The environment is very different this time with Switch being in such a dominant position and selling as much software as the DS did in it's peak in Japan.

Holy shit, only 180k games sold since launch? What are Japanese people doing with their PS5s, then? Surely it's not something mad like 90% of games sold are digital. I'd say Genshin, but even that makes no sense as it's available on PS4 and mobile.

So how and why are Japanese ps5 owners buying so little games? It can’t be a digital thing surely?

Digital makes a small contribution,
Due to leaks we know that Village opened with around 20% digital across the PS4/PS5. We also know that Returnal was the top selling game digitally in April despite being on sale for a single day and the physical version selling less than 7K.

There are many reasons to explain the PS5 under-performing in Japan:
- Lacking a strong & consistent line-up of games for Japan during it's first year on the market
- Competing against a dominant platform like the Switch, which has attracted support among companies that used to be far closer aligned to PlayStation
- Units being resold to other markets(mainly China)
- Backwards compatibility, second hand sales, digital sales and games like Fortnite, Genshin Impact etc being digital only

Personally I think that PS5 not actually reaching as many Japanese customers compared to the sold hardware figures Famitsu reports, Village should have performed far stronger than it did on a 450K+ userbase
Nothing else can really explain such decline compared to any other console launched in Japan historically. World Wide launch that didn't include China is a big contributor as the rapidly expanding upper and middle class there has made it into potentially a Top Dedicated Video gaming market and a lot of the sales are on the gray market; Switch has sold over 3 million units, PS4 was over 2 million on the Chinese Gray market according to Niko Partners, when Switch overtook PS4 there they reported these estimates.
Long term Switch is looking like it will surpass 10 million units in China across official and gray market sales, this market was basically a non-factor 10 years ago but it's rapidly growing at the moment. So it's not difficult to envision over 200K of the PS5 Famitsu total actually ending up being resold on the Chinese market.

Mobile market making China the biggest market for gaming has shown it as a huge growth opportunity for game makers. In terms of hardware makers Nintendo is currently capitalizing to build an audience far greater than Sony and Microsoft have achieved historically there. The only worry for Nintendo is a Chinese giant like Tencent launching it's own console but for now it seems they are just happy to be the official distributor of Switch in China, while pushing their own games & investments into publishers like Marvelous/Platinum on the console, since there is very few Nintendo or Third Party games actually launched in China officially.

I bought the PS4 version of Village, it's got a free upgrade. I should've done it for Like a Dragon but went with the PS5 version for some weird reason :messenger_weary:
This is probably what Japanese people are doing, too.

Xbox Series was close to outselling the PS4 this week. I wonder what the demand is like for Xbox in Japan.

8000 yen for a decent but short-lived AAA action game is seriously pushing it. I really don't think people are going to buy games like that at that price in Japan. I know I won't.

Next week are the launches of Rune Factory 5 & Miitopia,
So far Marvelous has never had a Rune Factory game debut with over 100K sales, I think it's possible for this to happen this week as it does seem that the initial reception of the game is good, it's #1 & #2 on the eShop overall I anticipate the game to easily surpass 300K physical this year. This should allow them to move ahead of Square Enix and remain there unless Square has a Dragon Quest game slated for the Switch later on in the year. Marvelous still has a very good chance to surpass 1 million software sales this year as the updates to Olive Town will ensure it will get bumps during Obon and December. Usually, the franchise is a leggy one, so physical sales of the game can definitely reach 500K physical lifetime, Sakuna is looking like it should have no problems adding 100K to their total this year and also they have one more unannounced game for this year.
Still a missed opportunity for them as if they had delayed Olive Town a bit they could have had a much stronger WoM and legs

In terms of Miitopia, it's a slow burn, the 3DS game debuted with around 28K sales while the 3DS was already in decline as the Switch was revealed a few months earlier. I think Miitopia's debut will be closer to 50K and the game has a decent chance to end up between 400-500K sales lifetime.

The next major game on the PS4/PS5 is Scarlet Nexus, as Final Fantasy VII Remake Integrade is PS5 exclusive and it allows users to buy the PS4 version and simply update - with over 1 million physical copies sold there is plenty of second-hand copies you can buy for around Y3,000. So overall I don't expect Integrade to surpass 50K sales on the PS5 based on Village's performance and second-hand market. Scarlet Nexus needs good WoM to get to 200K across the PS4/PS5 this year, very few Bandai games managed to surpass 200K on the PS4, so I'm thinking the ceiling in the current environment there is 175K with good WoM, while the PS5 version will again struggle to surpass 50K

RIP Boddy :( why was he banned?

Anyway sad to see Sony could only ship 14k consoles.

Here you ca n perfectly see how the supply dropped since March. That's flatten the curve you don't want to see.

Europe is similar from what I know about the UK and Germany.
Not sure how much Sony is stockpiling for the Chinese launch, or if they still prioritize US shipments, but Q1FY2022 should be at least 500k units below Q4FY2021

REVIII is a interesting case.
It had lower first week sales but hold better in second week... let's see how it holds the next weeks.

01./01. [PS4] Resident Evil 7: biohazard # <ADV> (Capcom) {2017.01.26} (¥7.990) - 42.165 / 273.353 <80-100%> (-82%)
02./02. [PS4] Resident Evil 2 # <ADV> (Capcom) {2019.01.25} (¥7.800) - 58.755 / 324.079 <80-100%> (-78%)
03./02. [PS4] Resident Evil 3 # <ADV> (Capcom) {2020.04.03} (¥7.800) - 34.698 / 224.188 <80-100%> (-82%)

So far not including digita it is tracking at 191.012:

01./01. [PS4] Resident Evil Village # <ADV> (Capcom) {2021.05.08} (¥7.990) - 35.045 / 146.216 <60-80%> (-68%)
12./04. [PS5] Resident Evil Village # <ADV> (Capcom) {2021.05.08} (¥7.990) - 6.083 / 44.796 <40-60%> (-84%)

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
not sure why its surprising that most RE games is on PS4, even an idiot could figure it out.

not all people are interested in RE games.

Higher user base = higher game sales
And people who jump to PS5 does not mean they are interested in RE games.

The PS6 will be a hybrid handheld.
Why would they do that? they're likely going to sell ~100-130 million ps5s, why would they risk that model to take on a domain they've had mixed results in? I know I wouldn't risk my success elsewhere to try to strengthen Japan regardless of how important Japan is.

still weird how week software is on the ps5 in Japan, Yakuza Inshen sold like 40% of copies of PS4, but RE8 only sold like 25% of copies despite the ps5 being in a better position vs ps4 than ps4 was vs ps3, so either scalping to east asia is a major issue (with the Chinese launch, as long as the supply isn't super terrible will be telling in the next week), or ps5 owner's buying behaviors are drastically different when compared to previous consoles in Japan.

Interesting note about Rise sales from Capcom.
Confirms what we guessed in others threads... overperformed in Japan and Asia.. underperformed in West.

Explains why they so badly undershipped in Japan

Except we've seen the PS5 version outsell the PS4 version in almost every European country. It's only Japan where the PS4 version is much higher.

The West has saved the japanese industry

Japan stopped buying its own games

PlayStation, increasingly focused on the West, is the most important console for japanese publishers

Japanese market ruled the world in the late 20th century

Console wars were fought and won in Japan

Its huge domestic market set worldwide trends

Japanese market is irrelevant in 2021

PS4 has sold 1.6 billion games (Japan accounts for 5% of unit sales)

Sony’s decisión to invest in the West is helping japanese publishers while increasing PS global appeal

It's far more accurate to say that Sony has declined in Japan, while growing in the West. The country remains the 2nd largest country for dedicated video game devices so is not irrelevant in anyway.

Whether a company can do well in Japan or not will depend on their overall strategy. For example, Capcom, Konami, Nintendo and SE are taking Japan seriously and they will be rewarded for that.

An interesting discussion about Japanese third parties, but basically - third parties have lost 4 years where they could have been seeing growth.
With half arsed support you can't really expect much, it's only this year that we are seeing third party sales in Japan accelerate as they have finally embraced the Switch.

Obviously there are third parties best positioned to capitalize - Capcom with Monster Hunter Rise, Monster Hunter Stories 2, Ace Attorney and rumored Resident Evil next year. Konami has Momotaro, Baseball Spirits and Yu-gi-oh so very likely to see their best year in Japan in ages. Marvelous will have it's first year with more than 1 million sales in the country thanks to Olive Town, Rune Factory 5 & Sakuna.

Bandai, Square, Sega will see a decline as they don't have anything major lined up, allowing smaller publishers to eat into their market share.

We'll have to see how this situation looks in a few weeks time. I'm expecting several DQ titles from Square and Bandai have forecast a rise in Japan sales in the 2nd half of their fiscal year, so they must have something new to announce.

Sega will have to rely on Atlus for Japan I think. I don't know what they could announce that would make a splash (unless Super Monkey Ball becomes huge or something).

0 xbox games in the top 1000 from last year. I believe that's the first time ever. A new low for xbox.

Looking forward to seeing ps5 catch the wii u and condemn it even further down the list of worst selling consoles ever.

So Rune Factory 5's launch is looking like it will be over 100K, so without digital it will be one of Marvelous Top 5 launches all time in Japan. A very good result overall considering the best selling SKU in the franchise on the 3DS managed 88K launch and 183K sales lifetime figures that Rune Factory 5 will probably manage to surpass in a couple of months. With future updates and overseas launch this will cap off a very strong H1 for the company.

There has been some problems with the launch but not at the scale of Olive Town. Game is also very likely to require a second shipment shortly(selling out on Amazon.co.jp points to there being demand), Olive Town still hasn't sold out it's initial shipment in Japan which was over 300K.

Like I mentioned at the start of the year by the end of 2021 the Top 3 Marvelous SKUs physical + digital in Japan should be Olive Town, Rune Factory 5 and the Switch version of Sakuna. Still a missed opportunity as if they had pushed back Olive Town and Rune Factory 5 to further polish them prior to launch, it might have ensured much stronger WoM for both games mirroring Sakuna which faced supply problems leading to very high digital result in it's opening month(>100K on the Switch). Unlike those two games Sakuna seemed very polished and WoM pushed it into becoming a franchise which is likely going to have no trouble surpassing 500K in it's debut across the Switch & PS4.

Olive Town could have very well been Marvelous's first million seller in Japan with a further 6 months of development time(which would have placed it's launch during the Obon holidays). I can understand for a small company it's pretty important to meet their FY goals, yet I hope that the financial success of these three games allow Marvelous to really invest into not making the same mistakes next time they are launching key games. Still reading that Olive Town managed to sell over 200K units in North America becoming their fastest selling title there and this bodes well for when Rune Factory 5 launches.

Just seems very weird that Japan is ending up being beta testers for their oversea growth this year.

What i can't understand is that the PS5 is actually selling faster than the PS4 in Japan but the games are not selling at all.

DiyKXLK.png

I think it’s pretty simple. Sony has been going ham with the free games. Who needs to buy PS5 games when they give you Astro’s Playroom and the PS+ collection right off the bat? I don’t feel any motivation to buy any PS5 games at the moment when they are being thrown at me.

They did that because they knew they were releasing fuck all for the PS5 launch...

The PS5 isn’t selling because of its game releases that’s for sure! Sony just has great mindshare and people like new things.

Nintendo Plans Upgraded Switch Replacement as Soon as September

"Nintendo Co. plans to begin assembly of its new Switch as soon as July"

"The new console, likely to be priced higher than the $299 original, may be announced ahead of the E3 conference starting June 12 to allow publishers to showcase their full range of Switch games"

"This is despite widespread semiconductor shortages that have affected the supply of everything from automobiles to TVs, headphones and games consoles, including the Switch itself."

"The Switch maker’s response will be to upgrade its flagship console with a 7-inch Samsung Display Co. OLED display and faster Nvidia Corp. graphics silicon making it capable of 4K output when docked to a TV, Bloomberg News previously reported."

"Nintendo shares rose for six straight days ahead of Thursday, bringing it closer to all-time highs on apparent expectations of an imminent announcement of the new hardware."
