Easy there tiger. Nothing is set in stone, especially when it comes to Nintendo. Will they seek more power? Probably. But they will also introduce some major innovations. And that's where things can go extremely right, or extremely wrong.
Well, sure. I'm just going off the assumption that every gen there is always a power bump, and I don't think having a 2 - 3 TF machine is that much of a jump, even if Nintendo has a focus elsewhere, like the Wii did.

Holy crap, only one PS game on the top 30. And a PS4 game at that.

Can we please discuss the abysmal PS5 situation in Japan like reasonable people?

What I don’t understand is why Breath of the wild is doing so well? Who is buying it over Tears of the Kingdom in 2023, Nintendo is really impressive in Japan

TOTK is a direct sequel. So as a single player game, BOTW still offers a great value to those who still haven't played it and wants to play the first game before the second entry.

Yes, that is true. The Wii U was was a flop and Nintendo loss support from alot of 3rd party devs because its underpowered.

Nintendo has been “underpowered” relative to its main competitors for nearly two decades now.

They lost third party support on the Wii U due to lack of sales, not lack of power. Third party devs would put their games on a device less powerful than a glass of water if they knew they could make a nice profit off of it.

You guys are grossly underestimating FFXVI’s sales potential in Japan.

Final Fantasy is right up there along with Dragon Quest and Monster Hunter as the top 3 third party franchises in the country.
Keep in mind, we are talking physical split only. It's a safe bet altogether that it'll hit close to the rest of the modern mainline titles albeit still deflated IMO.

Even the Producer has assessed this due to the brand value drop since XV. He also reiterated just the other day on TV, he's not expecting much from First week sales and anything frontloaded, they have a long term 18-month sales plan instead. It could be an anomaly, of course.

They are holding it for this event.
Last time, they did huge dump of stock of xbs after their event, if I remember correctly.
That’s most likely incorrect as that would make zero sense from a business point of view.

Why would they "hold" consoles in warehouses until after a big event? Wouldn't you want those consoles in homes while the event is happening?
They reset their marketing campaign each time which brings in new interest in the console. Pretty much a necessity if they want to sell past other sub-million selling consoles in Japan.

On the PS4 Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy XV sold less than 2m copies. As far as i can see FFVII remake didn't even reach 1m. Monster Hunter sold less than 3m.

I'm not sure how many consoles people expect FF16 to sell.

It makes sense.
People are paying attention to this event, that means more eyes on what is coming to the console. If people like it, they will buy it.

Its best strategy to maximize your sales on events like this.

I understand that, I just find it odd that if someone hasn’t played it all these year to pick it up now when the sequel came out, either way very happy that it is still in the top 10.

On retail, FFVIIR opening week was at 702K, but with digital it had already sold 1m and was sold out in stores within 3 days. It outdid KHIII's 610K, but FFXV was 716K (Media Create 690k) which eventually hit close to 1m.

These are not the numbers that are going to sell very many PS5's. Monster Hunter was the only game to come close (or reach) 3m on the PS4. I am doubtful that FF16 on the PS5 can sell as well as ff15 or VII.

FF XVI is going to launch in what seems to be an extremely unpopular console for software sales. The game completely ditched its history in favor of something different, becoming a game that is Final Fantasy in name only. And the kind of gameplay and story it adopted seems to be far more popular in the west than the east. And in COMG!, FF XVI is at measly 71 points, just 3 weeks away from its release.

FF XVI is primed to have the worst performing first week sales the series had in a long time, at least physically. I personally predict that it won't even crack the 300k mark for the first week, and wouldn't be surprised if it landed around the 200k mark.

Let's keep in mind PS global sales are more than 70% digital. So maybe it's around that same % in Japan.

You make it sound bad. But, half of 400 isn't a very big number.

No, not for the week. I'm talking about for the year so far. So far, they've sold half of what they did last year (at this same point). 80K versus 40K.

All Switch games, at least major ones, have been around 50%, and we know Japan is still a market that favour physical. I don't think it will be that skewed.

Maybe. Also the % might be higher for PS. It doesn't have to be the same. Remember PS has a sub service with a ton of games on it too.

But even at 50% it's still high.

Some of those recent sales will be japan has a special version of BOTW where all the expansion pass dlc is built into the cart. I held off for years but when i saw that there was a version that was complete i picked it up as it was cheaper than the uk version that only had the game. For months it was out of print and prices had gotten insane for it but nintendo did another print run so it brought in quite a few new people myself included.

Average digital ratio (for games with physical SKU) on Switch in Japan is surely well below 50% as December 2022, I'd say between 35% and 40%.
You can get a rough estimate by comparing the platform total sell-in with the total software sell-through at retail from Media Create reports.

Let's keep in mind PS global sales are more than 70% digital. So maybe it's around that same % in Japan.
A Nihon Falcom representative has recently stated that the digital ratio on the PS ecosystem for their titles is below 20%.
I say this not because I believe the current digital ratio (for games with physical SKU) on PS5 is 20% (it's surely higher) but to refrain people from believing PS5 has a crazy high digital ratio in Japan.

However the whole point is that PS5 software sales at retail are so low that to match just the physical software sales of systems with mediocre software sales like WiiU and PSV for the respective first 3 calendar years PS5 would need a high digital ratio of around 60%.
I repeat just to match the physical software sales of WiiU and PSV.

It's obvious that the advance in digital adoption cannot be the main and sole cause of the crappy PS5 software sales at retail we are seeing in Japan.

A reasonable discussion with YOU? Nope. Keep on concern trolling though. Seems to make you happy.
If you can't take seeing your favorite company doing poorly in Japan, and people rightly pointing that out here, why do you keep torturing yourself by engaging with these threads?

I'm waiting for Street Fighter 6, and after that FF XVI, to see how they perform to then properly discuss software PS5 sales here, so you might want to take a break for the next month or so.

If you want to have a discussion with someone, calling them a fanboy and encouraging them not to engage with the thread isn't the right way to go about it.

A new game increases the advertising around a particular brand, which makes people look at the old games. Some of the people buying TOTK won't have played BOTW before, so they pick up both games together. We've seen this before:

  • When Kirby Return to Dreamland Deluxe came out, sales of Forgotten Lands increased
  • When Mario Party Superstars came out, sales of Super Mario Party increased

It will sell a decent number of PS5s, you don't need to hit 3 million in a single country to move hardware.
Whoa at the number of million sellers on Switch.
So far there have been 26 Switch games that have sold over 1 million physically.

Though I agree with you're point that digital isn't going to do a 180 on ps5s software situation (people seem to struggle with the idea that its all software, not just new releases) but I'd bet Nihon falcon is a low ratio edge case, same with publishers like atlus and nis when their games launch

You need to hit 3 million to move hundreds of thousands in hardware and keep part of the existing audience engaged.

FFXV didn't move many PS4's. MH actually moved more.

You need to hit 3 million to move hundreds of thousands in hardware and keep part of the existing audience engaged.

FFXV didn't move many PS4's. MH actually moved more.
I don't think anyone expects FFXVI to move 3 million copies and hundreads of thousands of hardware. Afterall, PS2 was a very successful platform and that only had 2 games sell over 3 million. If PS5 can do over 120,000 on FFXVI's launch week, that would be pretty decent.

And yes, right now MH is a much bigger franchise in Japan than FF.

Yes but the PS2 had many more games selling 1m, 2m, and 3m, where the PS4 has only 2 or 3 that sold over 1m, and only 1 that sold over 2m.

FF16 is a different game than the previous so we will see how it's received but it does feel like they are learning the wrong lessons domestically for why XV didn't end up being a bigger seller as it was in the west.

The FF brand has been declining in Japan and I reckon FFXVI will continue that trend. I'm expecting 320,000 first week based on PS5 software sales so far, but that prediction is kind of a stab in the dark.
