Far Cry 3 |OT| Sex, Drugs, and the Call of Battle in the Uncharted

so is the end of the story as bad as giant bomb folks say? they're saying it ruins the game

They think the ending is bad because it was not the ending they expected.

There are subtle hints in the game which invoke that something else, something bigger is going on, but there isn't. Guys like Jeff expected a massive plot twist in the end that never came. I too expected this, which is why I initially thought the ending was bad as well. But after giving it some thought I came to the conclusion it is terribly unfair to blame the game for not living up to expectations I myself created.

Couple questions for those farther into the game.

I see people talking about the second island. Is that visable on the map from the get go? I see a bunch of stuff to the South I haven't even explored yet.

Also are there more guns unlocked in the stores later on? I swore I saw a picture of someone using a M4.

Yes, and yes. The southern part of the map is in fact the second island. You can travel there whenever you please, but you unlock fast travel on said island only after the story gets you there. Unlocking the fast-travel also unlocks the shops which add a couple of new weapons.

The M4 carbine with holo sight, suppressor and custom camouflage is in fact the Bushmaster, a signature weapon you unlock by
activating all radio towers

Far Cry 2 was such utter garbage that I won't buy FC3 based on reviews or forum posts, or videos.

So... will there be a PC demo of Far Cry 3?

The endings and general story are bad since its poorly written. Besides the dialog the bad guys give and excellent job done by Michael Mando this game wouldnt really have much of a story at all. Or at least one that folks would have given a shit about.

I have tried getting to the 2nd island pre-story quest (via jetski) and it just times me out and plonks me back on the 1st island ? What gives?

Really? You sure you're traveling south? There are islands to the north as well but those are just backdrop imagery, you cannot actually go there.

Hmm.. Maybe I was off and the second island is locked until you officially reach it.

The story is simple and straightforward, but that doesn't make it "bad". It gets the job done, drives the narrative forward, it's coherent and at all times you know what is going on and what your next objective is. It's well-paced, introduces new characters at regular intervals and has some pretty intense moments.

Especially for a first person shooter this game's story is way above the average FPS plot.

No its officially locked till you get there via story mission. A warning message pops up and you have to turn back

Well I'm having fun, but I haven't even unlocked the second island yet and I've nearly fully upgraded everything :/

Running around with a rocket launcher and a bow is awesome

Dude gave me a mission to take out a rabid dog, warned me the pack was around too. I FUCKING ROCKETED THAT PACK OF DOGS

also, last outpost I came across, was being invaded by Komodos. I sat outside and listened to the screams until our flag went up for some reason.

What mission (name) brings you to the second island? I'm at mission 18 which is almost half way
(fourty total)
and I'm still not there :(

Having gotten about 10 hours out of it, it all feels... insubstantial. Fast travel to get to the appropriate hunting ground, take the yellow thing, get the animal, craft another thing. Look for chests on the mini-map. Look for a guy to kill with a knife on the mini-map. Drive here, get lectured on the phone there. Yawn.

I mean if you're into video game busywork that feels like actual busywork, this is the kinda game that you can really sink your teeth into for a long time. All it does is make me miss the freedom of movement that you get in Just Cause 2.

You still run into random events with pirates every now and then even in areas which are liberated. They're usually fighting Rakyates so it's not much of a challenge, though.

There is at least one camp on each island that stays filled with enemies even after all outposts are liberated. Not as good as still having the random patrol but better than nothing.

I think they're main story encampments that weren't outposts.

Still don't understand why so many people are down on the story. It is as good as any other story for this type of game and the campaign tells it better than most. I'm going to chalk it up to people with unreasonable expectations---which isn't exactly a rarity on GAF. Haters gonna hate.

If you want to avoid busywork, just do the outposts and ignore all other side content (which is mostly padding). That's were the emergence shines and you can experiment with different loadouts etc.

I think the story is pretty good actually, it's just that writing the lets it down. Some of the dialogue is cringe worthy, especially anything involving his girlfriend Liza. Surprisingly, the best bit of dialogue I've encountered (outside of Vaas' insanity speeches) comes from an optional conversation, where Jason talks with Daisy about how killing is beginning to feel like winning for him.

I like that even some of the linear main story missions give you the option to stealth or combat. Heck, I even managed to ghost a section of one of them. The "puzzles" in the adventurey bits are stupid though.

Pretty much this.

The outposts are the absolute highlight of this game. If there were some tweaks to the AI (namely increasing the time value that dictates their various states of alarm) and making the outposts vary greatly in size, this would basically be the proper sequel to Crysis.

I found that I had a much better time playing the game when I wasn't using fast travel. Driving around is a lot of fun and you bump in some interesting stuff every now and then. If you use it all the time everything becomes kind of a chore.

Agreed.

I do like the tombs in general though, feeling like Indy :D

When you complete the game, is there a way to turn the outposts back on again or somesuch? Or will I just need to start a new game to dick around with outposts and such again?

Just tried some co-op and holy boy was it frustrating. We only played up to the second level, the one
after the race
and I kept falling through the map. Happened 3 times to me and once to the other guy before we just gave up.

Too bad cause it was fun while it lasted and hopefully they'll fix it or maybe it will be better when we try it next time.

I'm sure I've read that there is no way.

Which is dumb. I hope that any updates Ubi does on this allows you to turn patrols back on.

I mean surely the teams making these games must discuss these things?

I did the no fast travel thing for Red Dead Redemption since I really enjoyed the natural map design, dynamic music and those desert nights.

Since the island chores you're doing are not punctuated by good dialogue or music, it's hard for me to want to drive around and maybe be shot at by the enemy Jeep that artificially spawns every once in a while.

I'd imagine that the design discussion was centered largely around how much everyone hated the virtually instant respawns at outposts in 2, so they swung hard in 3. It's a shame.

Why is that when I'm wearing the yellow pirate suit everyone is still shooting at me? I thought the entire point was that you wouldn't be recognized. :|

That's why we should all eagerly await Far Cry 4 :) It's pretty typical that one extreme is followed by another extreme, followed by a happy medium.

If you're in a restricted area (shows up red on the mini-map), they'll shoot at you regardless, but otherwise you should be able to pass through them fine, unless you do something aggressive.

All the main characters I've encountered so far (just kicked the Hornet's Nest) are excellent, they have this amazing just-this-side-of-a-drug-trip vibe to them (except Vaas who is doubling down on that shit). But almost everything else, blargh. All the Rak warriors, all the pirates, all civilians: uniformly terrible.

I f**king hate the fact we only get 1 save slot. Wanted to go back and replay a previous mission but due to there being only 1 slot I cant save where I currently am AND go back to an earlier save. Retarded.

Great game otherwise.

Regarding the 'friends'. Rescuing
Keith (or maybe Kevin. I don't know, starts with a K) made me hate Oliver so much more. When I first rescued Oliver, he was all cool about everything like nothing happened to him, and he's still wearing his hat like a fucking douche while everyone else before him was in some deep shit while captive. It bothered me a little bit. But then I rescued Keith, and he's been getting the butthole raped off of him. And then we head back to the cave where Oliver is still just douching around like nothing has happened
. I dunno, just rubbed me the wrong way I guess.

Oliver is definately the "spoiled stoner" of the group, I hated him too. The rest is more or less normal,
I even liked Keith and genuinely felt sorry for him for what he had to endure.

I guess that's kind of cool, there is no way that Oliver's character isn't intentionally a douchebag, given he's wearing that fucking hat even after all this. Not everyone has to be likeable.

Lol the wingsuit is hilarious. Make a small jump > equip it > fly for days.

I'm getting tired of the game though, it's so repetitive. I'm having the most fun capping outposts, but even that gets boring.

Storyline wise I just met
Hoyt
and beat up
my little brother.

Really don't understand where this sentiment is coming from. What are some examples you would call "bad" for a game? Like SJRB said:

On another note, what's the deal with all the Kiwi accents? A hint at Rook Island's location?

Also on another note, just got my first parachute into double takedown. Feels good, man.

This is the major reason for my post above and the thing I feared the most. Sad to see that FC3 suffers from the same thing as FC2.

I actually enjoyed the story and endings a lot. Both had me thinking about them as I lay in bed trying to fall asleep. That is pretty good. I thought more about the story of this game than Dishonored.

I played (and enjoyed) Far Cry 2, but the structure and story of the game was much more built around repetition than Far Cry 3, not to mention the respawning guard posts that made your effort all for naught.

I just got fully inked (unlocked all the skill tree) and I'm not tired yet.

PROTIP
feel free to search for relics, do the campaign after every two level ups, and do the bulletin board quests to upgrade equipment and get money, BUT:
SAVE LIBERATING MOST OUTPOSTS UNTIL AFTER YOU BEAT THE GAME.
If you do that before getting far enough in the campaign, you're not even using most of the best skills that make taking over bases a JOY..Rambo doesn't begin to express the fun i'm having, i'm doing all knife base runs, a lot, killing a dude in cover, then taking his knife and throwing it at a sniper then exploding the c4 i set up around the camp one at a time and watching that blue flag go up is my new pornography.

I can't get the "knife stealth kill then use the revolver to shoot a bunch of people" to work -__- my gun disappears from my hand most of the time.

i agree, i liked all the characters for various reasons, even
Oliver, dude is just so comfortably numb, him wanting to stay with Doc Earnhardt was funny to me.
as far as the parachute double takedown..that is awesome actually..i'm trying to master a running jump into a double death from above. it only works sometimes -__-

Come on man. Game is easily worth 25 to 30 hours of gametime.

Just got to "that" part that they showed off at all the Ubisoft press conferences before the game released.... it's a bit disappointing how much the graphics have been toned down since it was originally show.

WARNING, large spoilers ahead:

Youtube proves my point:

Original clip from 6 months ago, notice the extreme amount of dense foliage in the background behind
Vaas, and the waterfalls inside the cave
, and the general level of details:

http://youtu.be/iaGSSrp49uc?t=1m42s

Compare to how it actually arrived in the final game:

http://youtu.be/Q2rV-mURGFw?t=19m54s

Oh well, such is the reality of releasing a game on 7 year old hardware I guess. Just makes you think what we *could* have had. Shame.

Ya I also noticed in Crysis the tree's and foliage move a lot like you see in the E3 Far cry 3 clip, But in far cry 3 final everything is more 'static', not much wind affects.

I bought a silenced sniper rifle. It's like I'm suddenly playing a whole different game now. So many really annoying bits with far away enemies and difficult outposts are suddenly so much more fun to play. I've been hooked ever since. And man ever since that stuff with searching for the knife is over, does the game suddenly pick up steam. Especially the E3 demo bit, you could tell it was made as an E3 demo, it was awesome.

Seems like my vanished camera issue isn't too uncommon, so hopefully it'll get addressed.

According to this one guy it's caused by saving while you're in a state where the game removes your equipment, which he presumes it would do during knife throwing challenges for instance.

So try to avoid doing that.

So somehow i managed to holster my weapon, so i made this short little video:
The Beauty of Far Cry 3

that was great, i managed toi holster my weapon once and was running around with the speed boost, watching my caucasian hands move realistically, i felt like tarzan for real.

Damn shame they couldn't add in all that detail and ambiance for the PC version, le sigh.

le REALLY? Ha ha i haven't seen "le" that in ages. took me back to senior year at highschool and all the hipster chicks saying that.
