FAST Racing NEO (Wii U) out on Dec 10th in NA and EU for €14.99 / $14.99 / £10.99

Holy shit, £10.99? All kinds of in. I'd probably have bitten at full price (assuming it wasn't like one track and half a spacecar), so this is a no-brainer.

Just watched the video above, wow does this game look good! I'm not a huge racing fan, but for $15 I can definitely get behind a game like this. The sense of speed is unreal, and the visuals are gorgeous

I don't even care about the speed much(the stock speed seems fast enough for me) but it irks me when people don't do their homework and brush off games that quickly.

Yeah, at the very least, the poster could have asked about the speed of the game before outright dismissing it. FAST Racing Neo isn't the first racing game to have different speed leagues.

The $15 price tag caught me off gaurd. I thought this was gonna be $20 at least lol. Now I regret not buying something on the recent eshop sale.

It should irk you that there's even any confusion about whether or not people are playing at the fastest speed. If you're gonna call your game FAST it'd better be fucking fast all the fucking time, not selectively fast if you feel like it.

This comment is irksome for being petty over the name

The controls look juicy. I feared they'd be similar to Wipeout Fusion but this looks much more like F-Zero GX mashed with Wipeout HD control/mechanics wise. It also appears to be a huge step up in every way from their Wii racing effort.

Very pleased!

Because choices are bad, mmmkay.

Not everyone can play at ludicrous speed.

Looking forward to it. However, it must be said FAST Racing League was not great; far too hard to even win a game. And not "F-Zero" hard, just, "This isn't balanced right" hard.

Hopefully it is easier.

Quick impressions: I just finished the slow class (50cc) and unlocked the next set of cups on the higher speed (let's call it 100cc). Game is pretty challenging. If you crash you will have to race clean and boost to finish in a good position. On the last cup I finished in second overall and thought I raced well, but the car that beat me would finish a race 5-10 seconds ahead of me.

I'll be going through 100cc mode tomorrow and may capture footage from there - though I want to wait and use my 30mins of footage time showing the highest speed.

While I agree in principle, I think to judge if Fast is fast enough, we need to wait for footage of the last difficulty setting. Of course it will still mean we have to fight our way through the too slow difficulty settings before, but as long as it is mind-blowingly fast in the last setting, I think it is worth it. For the future though: Make it as fast as possible from the get-go!

Having the fastest speed be the minimum difficulty is a good way to alienate casual players. In case you guys haven't noticed, Shin'en has been pretty successful on Nintendo platforms due to their games being accessible and having broad appeal.

Just be glad you guys have an option to play a mode that requires superhuman reflexes. Many games that have broad audiences don't even bother with catering to the hardcore.

They're successful because their games are technically impressive and because they give Nintendo diehards something to rally around; the games themselves are rarely anything special.

They've been successful since the GBA days. Starting on Wii, they no longer needed publishers and found more fans because of social media. Their games are technically impressive, but is not the sole reason. Games like Art of Balance don't have threads and receive tons of praise for their visuals, yet were successful enough across Wii, 3DS and Wii U; and a good game too. Relaxin' too. So was Fun Fun Mini Golf.

If it was just because of technical accomplishments the likes of High Voltage would still be doing Nintendo only projects, since they were always talking about their engine and technology. :p

Nate, how are the controls and how do they compare to the first game???

nano assault is a pretty damn good game and so is art of balance. I didn't like their platformer nor the first fast. I am reviewing Neo and it handles the gameplay way better than the original

It's good to see what actually motivates you, the first post might have given the wrong impression that you actually care somehow about the game (as well as your presence in this thread). (Un) Fortunately it is just an old case of console wars.

Don't bother, he's not here for the game. But I totally agree with you on Art of Balance and Nano Assault.

I'm talking about commercial success, not critical acclaim. Every single one of their games has been commercially successful. Do you know just how broad their catalog of games is?

I'm pretty sure that their diehard fans weren't the ones buying Maya the Bee and Strawberry Shortcake in droves. Their games have broad appeal, and their games that have the broadest appeal have been the most successful. Shin'en has said many times that they make their games with the mass market in mind, despite their high technical standards.

Art of Balance is one of their most successful franchises, and it has nothing to do with the niche appeal to the hardcore. It's just a fun, accessible game.

Their games may not be all that remarkable, but Shin'en certainly knows how to make their games marketable.

Boy, what a perfect continuation of the 'but FAST in the title must mean really fast from the get-go stages!' narrative.. /golf clap

What? I don't give two shits about console wars, I just think Shin'en makes soulless games--pretty games, for sure, but they all feel like something that'd come packaged with a circa-2000 video card or something. No imagination, no ambition beyond the technical, occasionally competent (moreso in recent years).

In this instance, naming their game absolutely anything but FAST probably would have helped a little.

That's fine if you think that, but their games sell very well and looking pretty has very little to do with it (for the mass market anyway).

Their generic titles make uninformed consumers more likely to buy their games. This is exactly how the mobile market works.

You keep saying "successful" but I think "sustainable" is more likely, and I'm not convinced they're deliberately gentrifying their games for the mass market, they're just jejune. Good on them for finding a niche and good on them if this game does turn out to be fun, but I've checked out.

OK, so you are just very uninformed and posting with proud about that.

Nobody who bought Nano Assault Neo or Art of Balance bought it to brag about Wii U's power. I bought them and they are fun. Nobody who bought them and talked about them on this forum had anything with any kind of dick waiving.

In this instance, if you spend 5 minutes searching info, you can find why the name and how fast the game really is. Guessing things just from a game's name is not really a smart thing to do. Who would buy Watch_Dogs in this case, for example?

I'm just saying what Shin'en has already said, many times.

Shin'en said:
As any game we ever released on Nintendo platforms it was a commercial success for us. The sales were on par with Jett Rocket and Art of Balance, two other gems on WiiWare from Shin’en.

They're talking about sales. I'm pretty sure they'd be in a fine position to know how well their games sell.

Shin'en said:
With Art of Balance we learned a lot about designing a game for everyone. It’s so easy to pick up or join an existing game. You can play alone or with friends and family. We showcased the game at EGX in London and we’re happy to see that people got really sucked into the game. People also loved the various controller support. That’s something we want to keep for FAST Racing Neo. People should be able to play the game with any controller style that makes sense.

I think it's pretty clear what their design philosophy is. You can keep pushing this niche gamer narrative if you like, but it won't magically make it true.
