Feel good about Microsoft first party after E3?

Well, MS doesn't own Ryse, so the onus is on Crytek to pursue it.

And lol at Ryse 2 being announced this year. I wouldn't bet on it. We'll see it next year if it happens. I don't subscribe to the sequel of AAA-game being announced within 10 months of its previous release, triply so if the game is truly going to change its setting. ( which means more new assets altogether )

But if MS are interested in a sequel, I can see no reason why Crytek wouldn't want to pursue another. It doesn't matter to me how they make it, whether it's multi-plat or what, but I want a sequel. I really enjoyed the first.

My understanding was always (publisher in this case being platform-owners):

1st Party: Publisher-owned IP and internal studio working on it
2nd Party: Publisher-owned IP but external studio working on it
3rd Party: Completely external studio owns IP and makes it

So Sunset Overdrive would still be third-party, because Insomniac keeps the IP, but it's just a third-party exclusive. Scalebound might be second-party depending on if MS owns the IP or not

The differentiation between 1st and 2nd party is meant to be used for the studio itself, not the games they produce. The games that a 2nd party studio develop are still considered to be 1st party games. The key factor is not IP ownership, but whether the platform holder is publishing the game or not.

I'm not sure I've ever heard that take on it before. Would you mind defining 1st - 3rd party like he did in your thinking?

Not really. Halo is still Halo and will be great I'm sure. I'm looking forward to Master Chief collection too, not just Halo 5. I will follow Kamiya anywhere and so with Scalebound they will eventually have me there. Other than that though, not really impressed by anything. I was interested in Sunset Overdrive from last E3 but reactions from the people who were make it sound not that great. Fable Legends looks terrible. I have never cared for Crackdown or Forza. And Project Spark is just insulting to Rare fans with that Conker thing. Microsoft can still do much much better.

Because finite resources.

Just because there's multiple offers on the table doesn't mean you can just take all of them.

Realistically, no studio will say "I will take all the offers and hire 500 people so that I have the resources to develop all the games!"

The studio that made it recently hired the old God of War driector IIRC. Like SS said, if MS is throwing them money to make a sequel, there isn't a real reason not to, it's guaranteed money.

1st Party - An internally or externally developed game that is published and possibly funded by a platform holder.

3rd Party - An externally developed game that is funded and published by a 3rd Party publisher.

3rd Party - An externally developed game that is funded and published by a 3rd Party publisher.

So then ME was a first party game originally? And some odd other instances where a platform holder has to publish it for whatever reason? I think there's a few games like that in Japan and the like that don't have their own publishers

I'm not saying it's not happening. I'm saying that there's one reason why studios may choose to not pursue an offer put on their table to develop a game.

It's similar to what detractors of Bloodborne's existence used to say "why would From go back to making exclusives with Sony funding when Bamco is throwing money at them to make multiplat Souls?"

Yes! Forza Horizon 2, Master Chief Collection, Sunset Overdrive, Crackdown, Phantom Dust, KI Season 2, Quantum Break, Ori and the Blind Forest, Scalebound, Fable, Halo 5: Guardians.

That's a really great list. Only game I'm not sure if I'll buy or not is Fable. Crackdown is my game of eternity announcement.

Considering what we're hearing of the 'tax-breaks'... it's apparently yes. :p

Jokes aside, publishers who own their own studios are free to grow however they see fit.

But it's highly doubtful that an independent studio will grow aggressively unless there's a proven continuous cash flow to sustain that growth.

Mass Effect was definitely a 1st party game. As was Ninja Gaiden. Their eventual transition to 3rd party games were the result of unusual circumstances. In the case of Mass Effect, Bioware was purchased by a EA, and in the case of Ninja Gaiden, Itagaki left Team Ninja and Microsoft's close relationship with the studio went out right alongside him.

Nope. Still a downer.

They need to get proper releases from Rare again. Let's see Kameo, Battletoads, Banjo (not nuts and bolts), jet force Gemini, or something else that isn't kinect sports. Maybe they can actually bring projects back to life like urchin or sabreman stampede.

Yep has really good games coming out from now until end of 2015/16.

Either I can try to hold out this year after HMCC or cave for Halo 5.

I don't care about much first party besides the Halo Collection but their exclusives are looking good IMO. I figured MS would have a lot early on just like with the 360. I just hope they keep it up throughout the lifespan this time and not spend all of their energy on something like Kinect.

I feel pretty good.

Even the CG trailers were thankfully for games that I know I'll be interested in eventually, so it was a solid look into the next couple of years.

Mass Effect was unquestionably a first-party... but was Ninja Gaiden? Some of the games it's hard to tell if MS simply published the game as a the distributor, or basically funded its existence.

Hope you guys were happy wit what you've seen from Ori and the Blind Forest. We'll show some more content soon and I definitely hope it'll be in a lot of conversations this year :)

As someone who has no interest in getting an Xbox one, for a variety of reasons I won't go into here, I thought they had a fantastic lineup at e3. Lots of good looking games including crackdown and some neat indie titles too.

The majority of their games weren't ones I typically enjoy but I have to admit they looked really really good.

Edit: from playable first party stuff I'd say fable surprised me the most. And that game you make your own games in looked cheesy in the promo but has loads of potential.

I am excited for what's been announced; but I honestly--Marketing wise, I think in the next few months we are going to hear more from MS.

And then there's that Halo MC Collection... Seriously, what an amazing way to reward fans and to say, "jump in if you haven't. This one is for you. "

How do you even know what Crackdown looks like? All it was is a CG trailer.

Sunset overdrive is the only game that makes me want a Xbone.

Because they got the ex DMA guy behind the first game back. But I edited my post after you quoted it to be fair.

Well, the new IP stuff is nothing but CG, so I'm waiting till I see some gameplay to make a decision.

Sunset Overdrive is really the only game I'm interested in that they showed gameplay for, and I'm not buying an XB1 for Sunset Overdrive.

I really like Halo, but the current lore has put me off so hard and Halo 4 was just a major disappointment. I'm waiting till Halo 5 comes out to make a decision on the XB1, unless they pull a major bomb out of their ass which makes me get it before then.

Alot of people are forgetting State of Decay and other first party games that no doubt are coming next year. But ms needs to keep the games coming.

I thought their stuff looked good. Except the new Fable game, that looked like garbage at the conference. Hopefully all those tail end games shown aren't 2016.

Undead Lab's new game is supposed to be an MMO, so I'm skeptical of a 2015 release. MMOs have longer development cycles. And unannounced games are unannounced for a reason that we don't know about them yet, and it's not ideal to make assumptions about what's coming aside from Forza 6.

I wasn't really interested in an Xbone, but Kamiya's hilariously stiff delivery of a game announcement and Sunset Overdrive looking hella rad definitely put some points over getting the PS4. Decisions..

I feel better than I have in a long time. For me Microsoft's biggest weakness has been weak first-party software. It seems that they are branching out and increasing their portfolio from more than just Halo and Gears.

Not enough yet to buy an Xbox one. I would like an X1 at some point, but I see no reason personally to rush out now and buy one. There are some good looking exclusives coming but MS need to keep them coming.

Forza always appealed to me and Horizon does too, Sunset overdrive looks like huge fun. Crackdown hopefully will be great but that isn't appearing for quite a while yet. But that aside I'm not bothered too much about the other MS exclusives, and exclusives are what I'd be buying the console for. PS4 has me covered for third party. MS are doing really well, but they need to keep their foot on the gas.

Pretty poor effort at E3. More of the same old usual(Forza, Halo and Fable) and vague promises down the line based on what the latest buzz is from their main fanbase. I think they'll be desperate to hold onto what they perceive they have, so at least you guys will get a lot of what you're clamouring for eventually.

Kinect saved them a few years ago and this time around the tablet isn't popular enough to copy. How long can they appeal to the masses when they are basically a "me too" company with little innovation of their own? The new management has a LOT of hard yards to put in.

Getting there with Phantom Dust and Crackdown, Forza Horizon 2 and Halo 5/ MC Collection.
If these are released within the next year I'll be happy. Would like to see some new IP and a come back for a Rare IP (Conker, Banjo, Perfect Dark) next year.

I'll only feel good when they manage to get Rare back to at least a glimpse of its former glory. That means a steady stream of quality core games, at least one every 2 years.

So probably never.

I was pretty happy.

Ori look stunning, Horizon 2 was mind blowing, the MCC offers incredible value and offers what I long wanted - 1:1 with OG H2 MP, Phantom Dust has returned, new Crackdown!, and a new IP from Platinum.

When it finished, I was happy.

I'm pretty happy. Their monthly updates are a welcome surprise, the games are looking good, and I really like having a kinect which is something I never thought I would have said.
