FF XIV: Legacy & Welcome Back(Accounts must be registered by May 31st for Legacy!)

I uninstalled the game (again) about an hour ago after giving it another (short) chance. You can tell that they made improvements and have added content, but the engine is still total shit. Words cannot emphasize how bad it still is. Seriously, the unoptimized beta for Guild Wars 2 running at 2560x1440 runs far better than this game does at 1600x900, and Guild Wars 2 shits all over XIV in every department save texture resolution.

This was not the time to be begging people to come back. They should have waited until 2.0 when they would have a different (hopefully far less shitty) engine running the game. SWTOR and all its Hero Engine shittiness looks, feels, and runs better than XIV. That's how bad it is.

i reactivated after a 6 month absent, and i was completely blown away by the improvements and content.

The game still have a long way to go in terms of improvement but it is improving quickly while introducing new contents.

This game cannot go the FFXI route, it will kill itself and it's predecessor. However, it is important that they learn their mistakes from FFXI and improve upon them in FFXIV.

I'd love to give this a go, I've been interested in it since day 1 despite its problems but I have to wait for the PS3 version. My 2 year old MacBook pro doesn't run it for shit. :(

I have been playing 14 since the beginning and at this point the game is not only playable but very worthy of its FF title. The job system has given the game a much needed FF identity and the primal battles and raids are pretty challenging. The storyline is becoming more and more fascinating and the music is too notch.

You can solo and group exp fairly easily as well so really, if you like FF and online games, it is a positive experience now.

Of course, the usual suspects on GAF will just whine about FF but whatever. They are entitled to their opinion. At least listen to people who actually play now.

My account has been inactive for a bit but I got the email today stating that I qualify for the legacy subscription. This feels like a bad time for a free period though, there are some big releases next week.

The game has definitely improved since launch, but the biggest problem for me right now is the lack of content. Aside from the primals and a handful of dungeons there isn't a lot of compelling things to do at max level unless you want to go for the really grindy achievements.

Is it fair to say the OP is better than the entire XIV section on Blue Gartr?

Some of the basic config settings still cause the game to chug for no discernable reason if you don't disable them;

Ambient Occlusion
Depth of Field
Drawing Quality above 8

Enabling these options provides next to zero visual improvement and really hampers performance unless your machine is from two years in the future. With them off I get 50~60FPS performance @8xAA/1080p using my i5 2500k/GTX 470 setup.

Naturally 2.0 client will handle this better(and probably make the above options worth turning on to begin with), but I'd wager fiddling around with settings can get lower end rigs performing well in this game no problem.

I wanted to enjoy this game i really did. Hell, FF11 was my first mmo and i played it for years!

I want to believe when Tanaka envisioned this game, it was very player driven. Unfortunately the tools to make that possible were never installed. Simple things to make the game work! It has taken too long for these simple things to be implemented. Like a mail system, a working market, a decent combat system(still don't care for it), crafting its still wtf.

I believe Yoshi P really is trying to do his best with fixing this game, as well as trying to repair the FF brand name from the damage it caused. I'm honestly at a loss of when i try to explain how i feel about this game and its direction. I wish Yoshi P the best in bringing this game up to date and playable for the masses. But i will not be joining back when it goes live for 2.0.

im tired... sorry for the weird post. just down inside this game hit a very odd cord.

Dental! We need you for Garuda and stuffs! XD

I wish Square Enix luck with 2.0. From what I've been reading it seems like they're heading in the right direction for the game. My only problem is pretty much what I said when they announced 2.0: it should have been F2P instead of subscription fees again.

Other than that I'm interested to see what they show.

I just logged in to a cutscene of a dream of some knight murdering me ^^

The way the game's been shaping up, I think 2.0 has a good chance to be quality. SE was smart holding off on the PS3 version to give it a new surge of life.

Still trying for a subscription model? Hilarious.

Also, does it still run poorly? Are the keyboard controls improved over the patch just before pay period?

I hate F2P and I will almost certainly never play a game that leans heavily into the model for a variety of reasons. I'm glad FFXIV isn't going that direction yet.

well there's really no harm in activating since there's free trial upon 2.0's release, you can pop in and see around before making a final judgement.

As someone who played XI for 5 years I was really excited about XIV. Bought the collector's edition and played maybe 2 weeks before deciding that the game was garbage. Ever since Tanaka has been relieved of his duties I've been watching the development of this game closely. I might make the jump back into 2.0 if they fix a lot of the issues people have been complaining about. A new chocobo or goobbue mount won't bribe me back that easily.

Why not try it now? Wouldn't hurt any . . . and considering you only played @ launch.

So is this what they've been doing instead of making FF15? Or is it one of the sub companies?

I always liked how the game looked, but I don't like Mmos enough to pay $15 a month. If they made it F2P, with a $20-$30 buy-in, I'd bite. Maybe others would too.

Jump back in for the free trial

So, any good deals on the game itself out there, or is Amazon's $20 the best I could expect?

Honestly, $6 a month for 3 months isn't a bad deal, but I am annoyed at that $3 per character per month charge.

Either that or look for someone with a buddy code that had the collector's.

I'm going to load up the game again and have a look around. I'll try playing earnestly around the weekend. This free trial being within the launch window of Diablo III is not helping.

I think I left my character around Uldah somewhere.

the previous FFXI team are responsible for reshaping FFXIV, they aren't affecting other FF developments. If anything the team are utterly committed to improving the game, no distractions whatsoever. If you happen to read their update notes you'll see how much effort has been put into each patch.

At least they aren't like the XIII versus team that barely does anything cept cockteasing players for a good 6 years.

When it's good I'll care. What other composers have composes for the game after Uematsu?

not sure about composers, but i'll like to point out that the music is enjoyable and fits the environments you're in. In one of the raid intances, you get a background music that shifts seamlessly between battle mode (fast tempo) or passive mode (slow tempo). It's a very interesting and makes the raid more immersible.

I came back in February after quitting 2 weeks after launch. it's fun now. it's free week, give it a whirl guys, especially if you got the collector's edition like me.

I think a lot of people are still waiting for the PS3 version... I think even though my PC can run the game quite well I'd rather play it on a console too.

Yep, I'm waiting for the PS3 version.

Can anyone comment on if the PS3 controller would be able to handle this game adequately?

Also, it kinda blows that people jumping into the PS3 version are going to miss a whole back half of the story.

Dental! We need you for Garuda and stuffs! XD

How are Garuda and the hamlet defense things? Last time I was on people were all excited to do AF and job stuffs but then the new patch smell wore off and it was back to sitting in Ul'dah.

There is a buddy code hidden in this post, quote to reveal and stuff. Please only take it if you plan on actually trying the game.

Man that is so weird. I've never played FF14 but I had a dream last night that I was going through the first few levels... a sign?

Legacy Member too :)

I only play the PC version with a 360 controller 'cause I find the keyboard controls unbearable; so yeah, should be fine.

I recall mention that the previous version's cutscenes will be watchable.

Hmmm, only ten bucks on amazon. Tempting. Are all jobs pretty viable for soloing?

yes, soloing is viable, i practically soloed my GLA from 1 to 30 in like.. 3 days burning all my leve quests.

Partying and Power leveling makes level grind less boring too, you also get bonus xp for resting/going off line.

Garuda's a giant bitch! lol. For current Dot anyway. Other LSes have been clearing it, but there was also an exploit with using BLMs to burn her before she could use her 2H. That's been fixed in today's patch. Besides that, it's been a fun learning experience and she's not as clockwork as Mog was. (yet?) It seems ideally suited for BLM/BRD/WAR, but there has been a video of a group using 1 of every job. That said, she is a DPS race. . .

Hamlet defense. . . Well it seemed fun, but the rewards and amount of effort required don't give you much incentive to do it once you've tried it D: Apparently drops are low, and people have to turn in crazy amounts of stuff to level the hamlet. . . Might be something Yoshi-p will have to tweak. The only real incentive for it is to replenish anima. Which can be done by turning in just a few items during the supply phase.

Is there any way to change servers? Im on Durandal or should i create a new character im only level 10

Not currently, think that'll be 2.0

And you should roll on Sargatanas with the rest of GAF :D Lv10 is nothing, you can get that within 2 hours easily if not less.

I assume you mean classes, and I would say yes. Some jobs on the other hand might be less capable.

Sorry, I assumed Jobs were the natural progression. In any case, lack of individuality was one of the biggest reasons I disliked the beta. I'm glad that has been reworked. Dragoons look pretty cool.

This is too good a deal to pass up. Wouldn't want to regret not getting Legacy in case 2.0 actually turns out to be good.

Just noticed I completely forgot to mention Materia lol... that's kind of a big deal isn't it? Fixed.

Probably the coolest thing about Dragoons is their backflip jump, even though I haven't really found a good use for it yet lol. The jumps in this game are really a step up from XI's.
