FF XIV: Legacy & Welcome Back(Accounts must be registered by May 31st for Legacy!)

Do I have to delete my character or can i just create a new one?

I think you delete your current char, and when you make a new one you should be able to choose another world? I've never dealt with this personally XD Been Lindblum/Sargatanas all my XIV career.

kinda want to try out the new jobs
but too lazy to reactivate and deal with their shitty payment system

what do i do hmm

I sincerely doubt this game can be salvaged but we'll see.

Dumb to not make it F2P. Is anyone really gonna give this game another chance?

I'd say it has a pretty good chance

The story is shaping up to be really good now, the gameplay mechanics are actually really enjoyable, they've got somewhat of an auction house, lots of new and great soundtrack additions, and the new battle content is fun and challenging.

Plus with the graphics/engine, overworld, and server structure overhaul for 2.0, i'd say it really stands a nice chance. Hell the current population (while not insanely big) seems like a nice size.

It's pretty annoying to think that I'll be paying $20 just to reserve a cheaper subscription down the line, but I'm probably going to end up doing it. I loved FFXI and this game looks like it's righted itself.

Some of the basic config settings still cause the game to chug for no discernable reason if you don't disable them;

Ambient Occlusion
Depth of Field
Drawing Quality above 8

Enabling these options provides next to zero visual improvement and really hampers performance unless your machine is from two years in the future. With them off I get 50~60FPS performance @8xAA/1080p using my i5 2500k/GTX 470 setup.
There are quite good reasons those features cause it to chug. Drawing quality above 8 renders the game at a higher resolution and then scales it down. Depth of Field makes things look blurrier the farther they are from the camera (and it looks great, not a quick hack). Ambient Occlusion...well, every game that does that takes a big fps hit, it's a subtle lighting effect.

Well, took the digital plunge. ~$39 isn't bad for 90 days of play.

Somehow, I even already have a SE account, though I have no idea why.

And still no PS3 version. SE are so inept these days.

To be fair: FF14 is a hot mess right now that PS3 is currently dodging a bullet. But the lack of a beta to give PS3 owners the ability to provide feedback from the PC terrible launch and get a unique GUI and functions for console ease of use and the like is really telling. :/

I want to get into the beta just to blow through the story before it launches. Oh god.

Well, I'd love to join a Gaf group. =s

Make sure to roll on Sargatanas!

Then msg either Eithne Rain (me!), Rin Morikaze, Calm Wind, Jinko Jinko, Eight Corova, Nagisa Kamiya, Kyudo Kyohon, Firon Veleth, oor Mjunter Elhunter for a pearl into the GAF Linkshell :D

Maybe, I still have it intalled. I guess it doesn't hurt to try it out for the short time that its free to see the changes. I may have to start over though since I don't know where I left off or what I was doing.

This game reminds me of socom series. The new game is completely different from its predecessor.

Everything I liked about FFXI was gone. Primarily the job system. If anything I would have wanted them to add a third job level system. Dark Knight/Black Mage/Thief or Beastmaster/Ninja/Warrior.

I have a feeling this free trial is just going to push me to start playing ffxi again. I probably won't be able to party with my dark knight but I should be able to jump right in to my beastmaster and solo for a while.

I'd consider trying it out 2.0... the screenshot they showed off was pretty darn impressive...

Only catch is I'm hoping combat wont be so slow paced!

Too little, too late. Beta should've been out when they were redesigning "2.0" on PC, IMO. I feel a similar thing is going to happen to the PS3 version come launch. Just instead of "lack of content" it'll be "Terrible user-end experience" that kills it.

Is final fantasy 11 free to play yet? I for some reason want to give that game another shot. I played to like level 10 and completely hated the combat system and how it was centered around a controller.

Well it was supposed to be a console MMORPG first and foremost. Also PSO 2 is being developed with PC in mind, but most likely plays best with a controller. Actually FFXI really didnt control bad at all with keyboard (numpad+ macro commands were all you needed really).

I doubt that. I mean the game already plays just fine with a controller, the only other thing i could see is maybe framerate problems...but they are already taking care of that by redoing the engine and overworld from scratch. And the way the lodestone (main site) and forums work, they take suggestions from everyone/are pretty transparent for the most part about the current development progress. It'll most likely be locked at 30 if anything.

I agree, but they're features that shouldn't be on by default and in many cases they often are; especially if someone is coming back they need to watch out for them.

The client takes advantage of DoF to some degree, but AO does next to nothing in context and higher levels of AA applied to drawing level 8 really makes supersampling(? I think that's the term) moot. They're all very miniscule touch-ups for the performance hits they create in the current client.

That's a great idea actually playing to the strengths of a persistent world. Not interested in playing this game at all, but I'll follow what they do with that idea.

They're tying it into how the world will be reshaped in 2.0. Dalamud is supposed to crash into the planet, or cause some sort of magic crystal reaction...or something.

Going to be drastically different.

The neatest thing is a lot of the system change they've written an actual ingame reason/story for it. Why there's more monsters, why they're bigger and etc.

Hmm. I guess I should stop being lazy and reinstall everything/patch and try it out again during the free period.

FFXI is my favourite MMO ever and FFXIV really let me down. I didn't intend to ever go back after the disappointment. But I feel I should really go try it during this free thing to see how much they've improved it.

Hmmm, only ten bucks on amazon. Tempting. Are all jobs pretty viable for soloing?

I solo'd to max level as various jobs. Soloing is very easy considering you can select the level of the mobs in your guildleves. They've added rest xp as well (works just like WoW rest xp, and other MMOs with similar concepts) so that makes it even faster.

You're still punished (when leveling) for playing the game constantly (like trying to sink in 10 hours at once, 7 days a week) but uh I can't play MMOs like that anymore so it really didn't bother me.

Theres a part of me that still wants to play this game after that horrible launch, but that sub fee is a hard pill to swallow.
I don't have the kind of time to justify paying a monthly fee.

Looks so beautiful, it always did. As a FFXI vet looking at XIV screen shots were always drool worthy..... its just playing the thing that was the problem. I just wasn't feeling it at all.

I'm glad they're trying to make the game better, it kinda annoyed me they had to ruin XI in the process (XI was left with the 'B team' that turned out to be awesome while the 'A team' f**ked up XIV so they switched them) but I said I'd give it another go when it hit consoles and I still stand by that.

Whether or not I stay will depend on them and how good the game is I guess, I was addicted to XI hardcore, spent years of my life (and money!) on it. I wonder if they'll be able to drag me in again, or do I even want to be dragged in again? lol.

How are you punished? You can party like normal if you want (which is really effective now, as it should be), and they did away with that stupid exp penalty (forgot what it was called) long ago.

I guess you run out of leves or anima to move around quickly, but you've still got normal parties to do/dungeon running.

The combat now is abit faster than XI, but not too fast. Its got a decent pace to it...somewhat similar to FFXII i'd say. Positioning comes into play with the combos. So far you do solo combos that involve chaining one weapon skill or magic into the next, creating different effects like +enmity aka hate, +damage, bind, heavy, etc.

Did they do anything about the crafting? Almost all the equipment was from crafting (which I don't really mind), but to make your own stuff, you need to be like... every DoL/DoH. Gathering and crafting took forever too because of those boring mini games.

I want groups and stuff in my MMO. But only when I'm out leveling and stuff. When it comes to equipping myself, I like to be self sufficient. I hate having to watch for people to sell certain things and then playing the price game.
I love the social aspects of playing an MMO. In fact, I try to avoid games like WoW because of the solo-focus. But I absolutely hate trading with people.

Was referring to soloing, which is what he asked about. With soloing it's very easy to run out of leves and anima and without a group there isn't a lot you can really do. But that only becomes a problem if you try to sink a lot of time into the game.

Like you say though, grouping is the way to go. But I always consider that a thing with MMOs, playing them without some friends is pretty darn boring.

Updating now I suppose. Been a long time since I last logged on.

Hmmm you think you'll play often? I know maybe Zack could probably join... we could all play together.

I've yet to play a game anyways with yah. Could form an epic GAF guild or something too. (Unless there already is one.)

No one reads the OP :(

Great, except it is pretty decent now :P

Honestly I'm just kinda scared. I was so absorbed in FFXI at one point it's ridiculous. So I'm using the excuse that it's not good/finished/beta/whatever to keep me from getting into it right now. Plus, the time sink.

WE ARE THE RED DOT

of Sargatanas.

Recipes were made to be a lot less complicated and reasonable, and recently they've also made it extremely fast. Supposedly some sorta change to the XP system for crafters too. But I'm not a major crafter myself so I'm not too privy to all the details. That said, the recent speed change has gotten me to actually start leveling my crafts. . . Something I haven't touched since launch.

Right on... is it cool if I join then?

I think I have like... a level 20 or 30 Pugalist or something, last I remember. xD

Make sure to roll on Sargatanas!

And of course! It's a LS meant for GAF-fers, though we did recently start expanding outwards in the best interest our growth. XD Anyway msg one of the above and we'll get you in!

I think a lot of people are still waiting for the PS3 version... I think even though my PC can run the game quite well I'd rather play it on a console too.

Probably because the KBM controls are balls.

So what server will be best for me? Are they specific to certain continents? I mean is there a zone for Europe, another for the NA east coast, etc? I live in Québec. What server should I choose when I make my character next week or so?

I think Ragnarok was meant for EU, but GAF is mainly on Sargatanas.

Sweet... sounds good. I'm just re-installing now, I seem to be able to log in to my old account so hopefully I can take advantage of that free trial currently.

Also, is the game solo friendly too? (More so than it was at launch?)

Yeah but the only way I could see you wanting to play it on a console instead is if you have a really big TV or something. If you want to get into it, and dont mind playing with a gamepad until they finish restructuring KBM controls (cant comment on how they are now), just plug, config, and go.

A lot more. As mentioned in Riposte's OP (lol), they've added rest XP and leves tend to give a ton of XP too. All the classes are pretty capable solo, but as I said. . . Partying is a lot more fun and there's bonuses to partying.

It seems though your account/character only works within the game, not the lodestone (and forums?). Kind of odd lol. In any case it is as simple as logging on.

I see a legacy icon on my character select screen, so I assume I've already qualified. However I was never sent an email.

Editing the OP again to fill in the details.
