FFVII: AC is "out"..

^^^ For some reason, that poor bastard looks like Tidus to me. :p (And judging by the hate FF X gets from some of the people here, a walk-on cameo where Tidus appears and gets shot would probably give US sales a hefty boost, too. :p )

And aren't the two games connected? They should have made some reference in the movie to this for one of those OMG moments.

omg subs already?

jeez the internet really is horrible like the RIAA/MPAA says!

If they bothered to put English subs on the JPN version then a lot of people wouldn't bother. I know some people are just twats who would download it anyway, but I bet a lot of people downloading the fan-sub version are only doing it because they can't understand the JPN version. If the JPN version had English subs then people would be buying that

I'm mostly interested in this movie from the sales perspective: tickets, DVDs, UMDs. How big/or small is it going to be - is Final Fantasy franchise still that popular?

People are lame. You don't need to know Japanese to understand how awesome the movie is.

Yeah - but that was a game. It may not work out the same for the Advent Children.

Yes.. But wouldn't that mean if the games still sell great, the series is.. popular?

If you're going to base it off of a CGI movie doing good, then Final Fantasy was the most dead franchise ever just a few years ago.

Yeah, but that movie was only loosely based on the FF franchise. Advent Children, OTOH, is based on one of the most popular FF iterations, FFVII. I want to see the numbers.

I hope the movie is good. This week is going to suck buying so much crap: GBMicro, White PSP, FF7:AC, and a few games as well....

When I had my Dreamcast messing around with it on it's birthday I happened across my OLD PSX games which were in the same container. With the FF7:AC movie and all I replayed the first 2 hours of FF7. I was sorta hoping for a remake..but the gameplay is pretty basic these days. If the movie does well and they decide to remake the game I hope they make it a bit more modern...

I have forgotten a lot of stuff.....where did Jenova come from? And why did the meteor show up?

Long story short: she crash landed into Nibelheim in the time of the ancients, and poisoned them...which destroyed their cultures and made them monsters.

Then she was captured and researched and tested and nn-GLAVIN, anyway, which lead to them discovering that Jenova cells can give regular humans superpowers. This, of course, was the start of the Soldier program.

Square fans owned again, i think the FF anime was better than this shitty movie.

I haven't seen AC, but the FF:U isn't better than ANYTHING, sorry. Possibly the crappiest anime I've ever seen, and I actually watched all of it.

Meteor = Ultimate Black Magic Spell. Sephiroth summoned it in order to cause a great deal of damage to the planet... Well, destroy it really. Because the planet gives off a great deal of energy when it is damaged, Sephiroth planned to be at the center of that energy, and become a God.

Something like that. It's been a while.

Met my expectations. I enjoyed it.

(score sucked though)

Eh? The music didn't turn out? That's somewhat disappointing...

What exactly does it sound like? Is it an orchestral soundtrack done in the spirit of FF7? A completely unrelated collection of music? I'm curious...

Uematsu hasn't exactly been delivering these last few years, though, so I'm not suprised in the least. His best work this gen still remains the "Intro" to FFXI, which he did not even arrange...

I'm watching Spirits Within RIGHT NOW on my projector and I'm stunned by how much better the facial rigs are. And it's such old tech too :(
Spirits Within was a much more expensive film to create, though, wasn't it? It's realistic style wouldn't suit FF7 either...

Spirits Within also appears to have a color script, too. (Grumble)

Gamefaqs has a plot analysis FAQ of FFVII that's nice and detailed for folks wanting to get back in the groove the storyline.

Few remixes of old tunes here and there, mostly original pieces as far as I could tell.

[EDIT] - Cloud's new Buster Sword is really badass. Is there an artbook or anything planned for AC? Some sketches of the characters and weapons would be nice.

You absolutely SUCK.

And Wario, I just want to say, you're an asshole for that earlier picture. heh

yeah, all i remember about ff7 is that everyone wore long coats and carried big swords and was secretly a clone of someone else. there was a mad scientist called "heidegger" for some reason, and for some reason the big gun he was building was called "sister ray." aeris died. when cloud was convalescing from one thing or another he said "zenogias" but what he meant to say was "xenogears." i wonder if it was badly translated or if it was just nonsense to begin with. maybe i'd better hit up gamefaqs before i watch advent children.

This movie is just a big jerkoff. Even if critics knew the backstory they probably wouldn't like it because the AC's plot is just so bare. Dialogue/exposition sequences only last for a few minutes, and mostly just serve to string together an unending series of action sequences. I'm not sure how FF7-fans will take it, since every supporting character is reduced to little more than a cameo....and all of them except Vincent are quickly and clumsily re-introduced. It's like they're there only because they have to be there. It's pretty much Cloud's movie. Even in the fight sequences the supporting characters don't seem to be doing much more than supporting Cloud. The few brief moments of group interaction that we do get is good enough to make you wish that they had scrapped a couple of the overblown fights for a few more scenes that focus on characters.

The action is largely the focus here -- it's all heavily stylized, anime-type stuff, where everybody is some invincible superhuman capable of falling from great heights, jumping from one moving motorcycle to the next, deflecting bullets with swords, etc. It's all pretty cool and quite spectacular-looking, but it's not built up at all. The movie is at full-tilt from the very beginning, so after an hour there's nothing left that they can do to impress us.....it just feels kind of "ho hum". It's as if The Matrix had started with Neo already being a bullet-dodging kung fu master and us already knowing what The Matrx is.....there's little to look forward too and same-y fight scenes just tend to grate after a while. But still, if you took any of the fights and made them into an animated short or something, they'd probably be very well received -- they remind me a lot of Aeon Flux.

I guess I am mostly surprised how the film turned out.....if anything I expected it to be too story-laden and too fixated on satiating Final Fantasy fans. Instead it's too action-laden and seems more interested in pleasing ADD-addled anime nuts rather than FF fans (though obviously there's a bit of crossover between those groups).

They'll love it for that reason. Cloud is essentially the most popular RPG character ever, and one of the most popular videogame characters ever. So the more of him in it, the more the hardcore fans will love it.

Didn't they say that AC WAS Cloud's movie, and that they were doing the spinoff's and such to explore the other characters specifically? I'm just going in expecting some good action, and I'll be happy. Were people actually really expecting a very heavy plot movie?

I have to agree with border, the movie is just fight scene, some short dialog, chase scene, some short dialog, fight scene, etc. And the pacing is just wrong.

The scenes are very action packed, though, and I have to say the character, monster and world design is very unique. I know it probably is nowhere as technically sophisticated as Pixar's stuff, but to me it's the most stunning use of CG I've yet to see. Everything has a dream-like look to it, neither too realistic (like Spirits Within), not too cartoony (like Pixar's stuff).

I really don't think anyone but a big FFVII nut, or some CG nut, will find that much enjoyment in it.

Yep, AC is Cloud's story.

That seriously couldn't be more wrong. :\

The fight scenes were damn exciting.

For me, this is "here's a kickass action movie with a bit of story about Cloud telling you where everyone is at until FFVII-2". :P

This is kind of like a guy coming out of a brothel and going "Okay man, you don't wanna go in there, the only person in there is a crazy midget who is going to run up and punch you in the groin, and it's going to cost you $40." And the other dude is like "It's okay, I love brothels!" and pulls off his pants and runs in at top speed.

Zeo: Those fight scenes are like JUMP CUT/JUMP CUT/JUMP CUT/JUMP CUT/JUMP CUT/JUMP CUT/JUMP CUT/JUMP CUT/JUMP CUT/JUMP CUT/SOMETHING EXPLODES/JUMP CUT/JUMP CUT/JUMP CUT/JUMP CUT/CLOUD HAS JUST CUT A MOTORCYCLE IN TWO AND YOU'RE GOING WTF JUST HAPPANED@!#?

Yep, AC is Cloud's story. I don't know if that excuses the filler battles though...? Perhaps AC would've been better off as the 20-minute drama they first planned for it to be.

Oh and perhaps it goes without saying, but if you want to appreciate the movie you really don't need to kill yourself reading FF7 summaries....as it's only really appreciable for the action setpieces. The plot is essentially a condensed rehash of FF7's 2nd and 3rd disc....there's some guy that uhhhhh, hates the planet or something and he wants to re-assemble this ancient evil so that the planet will be destroyed. Or maybe so he can ride the planet to another planet and destroy that other planet along with the current planet. Gosh the plot sounds stupid when you actually describe it ;) If you know Cloud's backstory, the Jenova/Soldier project, and Sephiroth's backstory I think you are pretty much good to go.

I thought the editing was alright. Overedited yes, but not a total fucking mess like Batman Begins or Bourne Supremacy or whatever. I don't think you ever lost track of what was going on....it's more like Kung Fu Hustle's editing I think. Kinda spastic, but shots are long enough to let you appreciate what's happening.

I dunno how people can get hyped to watch this guy mope his way through another story, particularly one without all the quirky charms and settings of FF7. I think the Turks have more lines than anyone except Tifa and Cloud. Cloud is so quiet I wouldn't be surprised if Reno actually has more dialogue than him =)

Yeah, but I wasn't going "WTF JUST HAPPANED@#%@!?" because it made sense to me. :P

That's Cloud though. FF7 to alot of the hardcore was Cloud, Aeris death and then those other people. I don't really think anyone but those fans will enjoy it, but that's who it was made for since they make up that fanbase that keeps FF7 talk going all these years.

Ive seen anime filler thats more exciting :p I still see no reason why they didnt just make a full on sequel than attempt to put their skills to a film trying to be a video game.

The turks were only only good thing in the movie imo.

About the music, I absolutely adored it. :D I love the whole 'let's rock it up.... 10 notches' thing they had going on the original FF7 OST. I was surpriced at the piano version in the church though, totally appropriate.

Buying this day 1 it's out, that is the 28th. *Thumbs up*
