God. People who idolize FFIV and FFVI and call all of the PSX era FF's shit annoy me, almost as much as nintendo fanboys.

Probabaly because in 90% of the cases, they are the same people.

HEY! You should be happy!

This game has been under wraps since E3, you should be excited that finally there's some news coming out next week!

I am very excited, wonder what the team has up to! :D

Any people who idolize FFVII as the pinnacle of the series tend to annoy the shit out of the people who have actually played the others. Its a nice game, but just because it had FMV and brought in some newbies doesn't make it the best ever.

Or they are in the 10% of people who realize that the PSX FF games are just shoddy mainstream teenybopper stuff. Mind you I was entertained by 9 and thought 10 had good gameplay, but all of these games are hardly best of the best material.

However, Matsuno has made some of the best SRPGs ever, and his most famous game to date, Tactics Ogre, is still considered one of the most influencial video games of all time (it was on Famitsu's most influencial list published a few years ago). FF12 might very well be his magnum opus, given how much production time it's had.

Don't worry; I hate them too. V is the only SNES FF I care about for more than the music

FINALLY. It's almost sad that I'm getting excited receiving news about news, but I guess I'm desperate... for FFXII! :p

Hahahahahahaha, while I'm glad something is being announced, I'm not getting excited just yet. It might just turn out to be 8 pages on FFXI's new expansion and a tiny corner saying "Hey FFXII is still in development, look forward to it!" so in order for minimal let-down, I'm expecting that. Any real announcement will come as a surprise! :D

Awesome, you rock!

Really? I often find people who enjoy FFVI tend to enjoy FFIX as well, not always, but I notice it quite a bit. Some even go off to enjoy XI as well. Maybe it's just me then.

Personally I don't like where FFVII, VIII, and X are set, they just have huge obstacles that are hard for me to get over and start enjoying, like how VII lacked any characters that made me laugh and cling to, and the whole materia system was something I never enjoyed. However X-2 seemed to regain my interest with the lighthearted feeling and the return of the job system. And now, XII's similarities to XI also make me VERY VERY excited. The battles will maintain the speediness that X-2 had, plus these huge expansive worlds will finally make their way to the FF universe, and I feel that's much needed, especially after taking my journey into XI, it just feels all that more like a fantasy.

Regardless, I must reiterate what I said in the official thread, FF as a series really shines. Each game is different enough for people to have drastically different tastes about each game, some will love a certain one to pieces, others will despise it. I don't think it's right to label any group, but I guess that's expected.

All I can say is thank christ they are getting rid of the random encounters.

Anyone who wants to be a conservative, go back to your NES. I've had to deal with 20 mind-numbing years worth of trolling through dungeons only to problem-solve simple and tedious puzzles on my way to defeating a shoddy character designed boss whilst facing a swarm of annoying randoms while in the process. Let me move the fuck on please.

The day a Dragon Quest game goes non-random battles is the day I stop playing new games in that series. It's one of the few things us clingers have left! :(

Hopefully the non-random battles will be more than what most NR are..button mash fests like Seiken Densetsu (more like button holding fests). Chrono Trigger did it acceptable.

Uh, FFXII is like KOTOR or any turn based PC RPG. Nothing like SD or the Tales games or Star Ocean.

Being like the Star Wars RPGs doesn't sound good to me... and considering I didn't like FFT (thought it had some serious balance issues and an illegible story), or Vagrant Story (great cinema direction, boring-ass gameplay), I'm kinda worried how it'll play. But it looks like it'll be a bit more challenging and interesting than the last crop of FF games - I love the open town environments and it's one of the best looking PS2 games. And having Sakamoto for the music is gonna be good :)

Forced fights in the same spots every time you go through a section are even worse than randoms

Better than non-random, IMO. Never played KOTOR..last PC RPG I played was an Ultima.

I rather doubt the encounters on the larger fields are non-random in FFXII. One would hope the mobs have some kind of AI that lets them wander around so that there's always something moving around the playfield - unlike KOTOR where everything was always in the same spot (and anyone that whines about FFXI reusing models obviously hasn't played KOTOR).

I just hope it's not button mash/move around the badguy stuff..not my cup of tea really, except for the old Zelda games.

FF is more of the same for me. The formula needs to be reivented. * Looks at Resident Evil 4 *

Ladies and Gentlemen of GAF, I present the above as the biggest urban myth of the last 10 years.

Stat progression based off of events in battle: FFII
Interchangable Job system: FFIII
Pathos-driven lead: FFV
Lead character-less cast: FFVI
Cinema-driven plot, (love it or hate it): FFVII
Junctioning, (hate it or hate it :D ): FFVIII
Grid system: FFX

Think of it this way: Megami Tensei has been around in many forms for over a decade in Japan, with many sideshoots; of which we have gotten I think 4 of over here, (one for each branch). Playing thru SMT:N, I'm enthralled, because it's all new to me, and I'm not tired of it. Yet for an avid fan of SMT in Japan, the latest releases are new, sometimes very different spins on an old, comfortable formula, just like FF is to us NA RPG fiends.

Neither are "tired", it's just that some can get "tired" of them.

The junction system was awesome.

And don't forget that FFIV helped lead the way to (semi) real time battles in JRPGs.

BTW, don't confuse junctioning for drawing, like most people do

Was very long since I last played FF8. What was it again, all meteor on str?

is there anyone like me who actually liked them all (well almost)?

FF 2 (4j) - loved it, my first real RPG experience (dropped dragon warrior and FF1 as a little boy, enjoyed zelda and metroid more :O )

FF 3 (6j) - still one of the best games ever imo. loved the story, the characters, the music, the events, the battle system... brilliant game

FF7-9 - loved the cinematics, music, etc. the battle system of part 8 was a bit crude (IMO) but overall they were very enjoyable

FFX - very fun game. loved the story (ending especially) but hated tidus' voice acting (my god that laugh)

FFX-2 - fun but should have never been made :O

FFXI - should have been called "Final Fantasy Online" shoudl not be a numbered FF imo.

:O

suikoden 2 still pwns them all

I liked all FF games I played except for FFX-2 which was ok, but with FF you expect an amazing experience.

The only one I really despised for a long time was FFVIII. Probably had something to do with the fact that when I started playing it I was really sick and I was just in a generally bad mood while playing it. Combine that with the fact that I just didn't get the junctioning system at all, hated the idea of drawing magic, and found the story rather boring than it quickly fell onto my hate list and I didn't even beat the game until about a year and a half later. My first time through since junctioning seemed way too confusing for me I fell into the "summon and charge" trap and when I got to the final castle I was obviously dead meat from the very beginning.

Yeah I really didn't like part 8s battle system at all.

Was that the card game? I don't remember much about the game, after I finally beat it I never touched it again. I still don't really like the story so nothing really drives me to want to play it again.

yes it was the card game. Gee you must been in a really bad mood. :lol

so what did you think of 9? Another love it or hate it game. I loved it.

part 9 was funny. square gave people exactly what they were asking for and people rejected them because of it.
:lol :lol

i personally liked part 9. vivi rox

I liked 9, it was quite understated and I found the whole last boss to be rather heavy use of "deus ex machina" in a videogame, but no more than Zeromus was in FFIV I guess. I liked the increased number of party members though, I wish they'd go back to making four party members standard again.

Yeah Vivi was really cool! I will never forget that cut scene where the Evil black mage blows away all the Vivi clones, damn it was so sad :(

BTW I like all PSX's FF including FFT.

The PS2 FF's are pretty meh, and yeah FFXI should have been called FF Online.

Can't wait for FFXII!

Freija > Vivi.

One of my biggest complaints about 9 (well 7-X2) is the low # of badguys in fights. But 9 was fun.

Freya was pretty dull imo. I liked zidane.

yeah where the hell did he come from? (necromancer)

I mean to use in fights..the characters themselves don't mean much to me.

I dunno where Eternal Darkness/Necron came from. He just had big manboobs.

Do you really think that those who praise the game do so as a result of the FMV? There was no more than an hour of FMV (probably much less, really) in FF7 and the game required more than 50 hours from most people in order to complete.

I do not worship the game, but I did enjoy the experience quite a bit. The world presented was extremely appealing to me and the storyline was quite unlike anything else I had encountered before (I was mostly a PC gamer at the time). I had played Chrono Trigger and FF6 prior to FF7, of course, but those didn't have the same impact.

I'd prefer to see a middleground forged somewhere in regards to FF7 opinions. People either seem to idolize it or despise it and it always results in problems...

Uh, I played all the PSX games before I ever picked up FF6 with the anthology, and I've gotta admit that FF6 was probably far better than the ones done after it. Don't get me wrong, I like how each game has a unique story, unique characters with different backgrounds, and usually semi-original fighting systems. But the epic feel of FF6 has only been topped, in my humble opinion, by Xenogears.

Don't forget that the game footage in the commercials were 100% FMV. That had a large part to do with grabbing some sales over in NA.

bingo!

they need to go the Jade Empire route if you ask me. could you imagine a new Final Fantasy with the Jade Empire gameplay mechanics? you would have the Final Fantasy presentation, story, graphics, polish, depth, emotions, and attention to detail coupled with the real time gameplay and branching storyline and choices (good/evil etc.) of Jade. wowzers!

.
