I'm not sure why anyone would doubt Blizzard making a capable fighting game given they made fucking Starcraft.
I think the one legitimate problem I could see with Blizzard making a fighting game is their general approach to balance. I get the impression that they can be rather heavy-handed making sure that things play out the way they designed it, and strategies found counter to that tend to get bopped. That runs counter to how fighting games typically grow, and I could see that irritating even more people than it already does.

yeah that is the worst. it like actively discourages creativity. NRS guilty of this to some degree.

For the record the one that shocked me the most was Ramenman's move on some Nazi fucker who used poison gas for his moveset (da fuck you thinking Japan????). Here is the first few seconds of it...

0wiUnxX.gif

...and then it goes on after that for another 20+ seconds with him beating the shit out of the Naze's corpse, pummeling it until its nothing but fleshy doughy pulp, rolling said pulp, and turning it into a bowl of ramen and eating the fucking nazi.

Damn Kinnikuman you scary shit.

UPDATE...

Oh god I found the actual show clip of when this fucked up moment happened. This was really a thing. Holy shit this show really had this as a thing. I'd have been so fucked up as a kid if I saw that...
Not mind safe clip of Ramenman's camel clutch thing...

This fanmade Kinnikuman fighting game apparently is accurate, but my God I had no idea Kinnikuman was this fucked up.

Download cccaster and put it in the same directory your installation of MBCC is in and run the executable. If you're actually trying to find matches, honestly I would direct you to #mbaa on irc.mizuumi.net to find games as it's usually at least semi-active. You'll need an IRC client for that, or at least something like Mibbit.

Then prepare to be sad as you find yet another example of a random netplay hack that outperforms 95% of fighting games sold commercially.

I have that game. Super Phoenix and Mammoth Man straight up murder some of their opponents.

Someone needs to find a way to make FGs fun in a way that scales down to the casual level. I think the immediacy of the genre is pretty brutal in this aspect: losing is very explicit and there's not much room/time in the space of a match to clown around or take it easy. Ineptitude (and almost everyone who isn't godlike will be varying degrees of inept) is really concealed by factors such as having a team, longer matches, more RNG, etc. Customization is also a huge draw, I think (in terms of your actual builds/decks/etc. in game, not just cosmetics). Fighting games don't really have elements like that, and their introduction to the genre is quite tricky and requires experimentation. Kudos to Rising Thunder in that regard. Smash has also done things pretty differently, of course. But a casual player in a fighting game can't really do something like copy a top player's quirky item build or look up decks or enjoy wins they had little part in.

One thing I'm curious about is if league/ladder based matchmaking in SFV is going to keep people more into the game. In MOBAs for instance, wallowing in a shit league (like I do in Dota 2) is still super fun and worthwhile, but do baddies in FGs have fun perpetually playing other bads?

I remember seeing something like this when I was younger. Back then it was called Ultimate Muscle. I'm guessing it's a "4Kids" thing like what they did to One Piece.

Living that One Punch Man life?

Its said, its receding at the moment. My barber convinced me not to shave and I kinda regret it.

Thought you learned it already from Onem

One-mic, as people call him (thought it was O-ne-mic, which sounded cooler imo) doesn't play sf anymore. Ninja too free atm.

Ill loan you some

I can finally become anime.

Dat hair struggle.

;_;

you lost your hair
but you have become strong

The power of nothingness comes with a price.

Shouldn't have picked a field where studying would cause all your hair to fall out.

Glad I ditched that and went into programming! I can feel the carpal tunnels now!!!

You're already bald? Aren't you like 23 or something? Life's too cruel 😢

24, I think its due to high levels of anxiety that I'm working out on now. Doubt my hair will ever grow back though.

Gonna keep this saved, heh heh

People in the fgc have talked about this for a very long time.

Rising Thunder is a nice experiment (near-zero execution requirement) and I'm sure other series will have moderate success with token attempts to make their games easier (Tekken 7 supers come to mind).

Ultimately the experience of a fighting game, for those of us that have stuck around for years, is the about wins, losses, and love of the gameplay and even characters/story. MK has done a great job making their game all about the characters/story while also having solid gameplay. If you're not selling a fighter based on gameplay (ie, you're not trying to appeal to fighting game diehards) then you should turn all the other dials to maximum and pray people still like the game part long enough to stick around.

It is really, really hard to separate a fighting game from the expectation of solid gameplay, the same gameplay that is specifically frustrating to new players.

UltraDavid calling ShinMaruku out
Can't call me out, I play more fighting games than most people. :p

The topic of DOA not being as big of a competitive game as other fighting games came up during the Buttgate discussion. David made a lighthearted joke about the sort of people who play DOA
You know the funny thing they say that about DOA when KOF is just as bad. I mean only in DOA and KOF can you beat the clothes off people. :p

How well do fgs sell compared to other genres?

You'd think we'd see more people trying to make them... It's like 3 big jp companies and 2 American ones that make fighting games atm and then a couple small studios and Indies.

Def no shortage of big devs who pump out fps games or mobas or rpgs or whatever.
There isn't enough money in it and the audiences are too entrenched for new big players. Not worth it for 3D, platform fighting (Smash) or 2D fighting.

Man, I wish I could just get a straight layout of how Izayoi works, and when she can do what abilities.

im not a bb player but from what i have played she just seems like mode change character in the vein of ABA or something. she uses her first modes special moves to gain resources which she can then spend on her second modes special moves.

bb folks seem to put up a ton of resources so im sure there is some video or dustloop thread which can be much more descriptive.

If I am to be fair Smash is probably the only real fighting game aside from SF and Tekken and GG and BB. Rest can be chalked up to bag packers in the US.
