I remember this conversation, always a fun one.

Bacchanal was pretty awesome, $65 or so for the buffet and crazy variety, most of which is good.

Another good steak option if you feel like traveling a little is Vic and Anthony's over in the Golden Nugget in old vegas. One of the best steaks i've ever had. Cost me around $75 for the meal though
Old Vegas is something else, I remember it before they put a cover on the thing and it's much better than it used to be.

My favorite divey spot used to be the Las Vegas Club. Dirt cheap drinks, good craps table, and dancing girls in the windows and the middle of the casino. I wouldn't be surprised if that place is either gone or under construction now. It always looked like it was about 5 minutes from falling over.

Another great dive is Stagedoor Casino. It's inbetween the Flamingo and Bally's. A little hard to find but they have the most insanely cheap drinks there. Used to be my go to for buying drinks illegally when I was in college lol. Last time I was there it was $2 for a hotdog and a beer and $5 for a beer and a shot. It's a fun place to start off a rowdy night or to cap one off before heading back to your hotel.

Might as well repost my Vegas food suggestions post since folks are asking about stuff to do/eat. These are some of my favorite spots:

I've been eyeing Lotus of Siam since it's right around the corner from the Westgate. Will give it a go.

And yeah, the Bacc is sick. Definitely doing that again this year.

That Gordon Ramsay Steak looks like the best steak place ever.

The Beef Wellington is superb, so is the truffle/bleu cheese macaroni. We also got the sticky toffee pudding and that was mindblowing. With wine it ended up being a few hundred total but goddamn it was good.

I still remember my first match from the Evo 2012 VF5:FS tournament... mainly because it was against Jebailey, I had him pegged as a super scrubby Lion, my read was absolutely right and I still managed to get hit by Lion's 2KK less than a second into the match. -_-

I was actually training and playing online a bunch for this tournament and was hoping to get out of my pool, but I managed to end up having Kissa (who was one of Japan's top Shun players) and GentlemenThief (generally considered to be America's best VF player) in my pool, so that was... uh, highly unlikely. :X

GT is a miracle

Well, we're basically a week out from Evo (!!!!) so it's probably a good time to post this question:

Anyone got a good sort of "Survival Guide" for a first time (only time) Evo attendee? Or really just any general advice?

This will be my first (and realistically, probably only time) going to this event and I'm kind of at a loss of what to actually do when I get there. I've never been to any other FG tourney so I really have no idea what a normal day is going to be like. Do people normally spend their entire day just sitting in chairs and watching? On that note, can you hear the commentators while watching from the audience? I'm still not 100% clear on every game being played (I have no idea how Pokken works, for instance) and would be totally lost while watching something like that with no announcer explaining anything. I'm absolutely 1000% piss poor at playing these things, so playing a bunch of casuals is probably out. And I know the tourney's in Vegas...but I've been to Vegas plenty of times and that's not really the point of going to Evo.

I figure this is going to be my only real chance to ever attend this thing and don't want to miss something everyone else would consider a "Must See". At this point the only thing I know 100% I'm doing is 1) Attending Fri-Sat-Sun and 2) going to try and see "Bang the Machine" for it's 90's glory. What would be y'alls must-do list? See a random hilarious game (Dong Dong Never Die, Jackie Chan Fist of Fury)? Get into a Money Match room somehow to see the sets? Stay after hours in the main rooms to catch random stuff (Floe playing 'I wanna be the guy' was a few years ago, right?)?

And does FGCGAF meet up during these things?

Bring some vitamin C and D, hella hand sanitizer

There's always a lot of luck in it, some pro players went 0-2 and 1-2 at NCR, that's why you sign up for more than one game. :)

And that's why I'm probably never going to EVO. Traveling half-way across the word only to lose from the word go is not my idea of a good time :p

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! Keep em coming. It's fun as hell to talk about. I'm so pumped for next week.

No one answered the question about hearing announcers during the games. Is that even a thing? I'm worried about not knowing what happened during certain games (hello Pokken!). Maybe I'll just get lucky and sit next to someone who can explain it all to me and wants a free drink or two as a thank you.

EDIT: Man, on that note, what's the food and drink situation like in the venue? I know it's in a totally new space this year, but is getting a beer and a sandwich easy?

If only EVO was in a city with other stuff to do.

Announcers are not piped back in to the crowd, or at least they aren't usually. Who knows what the plan is for this year, it could change. There used to be a separate hype person for the crowd but they don't do that anymore either.

If your sole goal when going to a FGC event is to win, then yea you definitely shouldn't go, not only to Evo, but any of them.

9 years going to EVO but I've rarely actually done anything in Vegas since I was always so consumed with the tournament.

Anyone have any ideas for cool/weird shit for gamer nerds to do in Vegas? Like I know about the pinball museum. Stuff like that.

I spent like $600 on food during evo last year

worth it

Hell I spent almost that much in one meal. Also worth it. Why go on a vacation if you aren't going to do it up to the max?

As far as "gamer" shit...I guess Gameworks? That's a fun place. Insert Coin (downtown barcade) is bullshit though, ignore completely. I dunno, when I'm not at EVO I usually avoid gamer/nerd shit. Except the pinball museum. Fucking A its so awesome.

Doesn't have to be game related, just mean like, stuff for weirdos and not night clubs.
idk, im not into clubs or gambling so I focused on food and had a blast.

Nice where at. I have a friend that dropped $1k on a single meal with his fiance. I was impressed. I'm willing to spend for a good meal, but I havent had a good excuse to go real crazy with it yet.

Stagedoor Bar which I recommended before is a good one if you want to drink and gawk at weirdos. Especially around 3am, shit gets wacky there.

I recommend catching a show too if you've got some extra cash. There are usually kiosks/vans along the strip selling discount tickets to shows if you want to do it on the cheap.

There's a Mob Museum in Downtown Vegas, it's pretty cool and cheap. Worth checking out if you don't want to gamble or drink. And of course there's the roller coaster at NYNY if you are into rides.

Ramsay Steak, actually. It was ~$400 for two of us to get the 5 course meal plus a couple bottles of wine. It was mainly my error for not asking the price of the wine and just saying "Bring us something really good" lol.

haha, I know a couple people who have done that. Worst I've seen was $250 bottle

Yep, one or two hours drive to GCC Majors Bahrain this December is totally worth it though. :D

Go see the Blue Man Group if they're in town, which they should be.

Just do it, don't ask why. I went to one of their shows on my very first EVO trip, and it was the highlight of an otherwise bad trip.

wow no mention of pasadena regionals on GAF

marvel really is dead
I saw it last night it was pretty cool. I actually didn't know about it until last night when it was mentioned on Ultrachen so I looked at some matches.

Cloud vs FChamp set was nuts and there were some crazy matches in general in it. ChrisG demolished FChamp in grand finals though.

It was high roller tournament $50 entry FT4 and there was a rule that if you went 0-3 in a match then you automatically lost the last one too. Again did not know any of this so I missed out on it live.

There's not too many KFCs or Popeye's in Albuquerque. They are both kinda far. But there's a Church's like three blocks away so that's my go to spot. Haven't been in month though.

I like Popeye's a bunch though. Had that twice on my last business trip lol.

Culdcept Revolt is out. You guys are about to hear me try to trial and error figure out a card game sequel that is in japanese. I will soon become a very bitter and stressed out guy trying to figure out matches that are over an hour long card by card with no guide. Forgive me if I just randomly post gibberish and swearing for months on end. It will either mean I've borked a save by nontranslated menu fuckery or that I've tried to pick up Marvel again with my Iron Fist team.

One of those two things. You're welcome to guess which when I post broken swearing out of nowhere.

Mr Wiz and I agree. KFC > Popeyes.

Ewww, fuck that.

Fried chicken should unify us, not divide us.

I like Popeyes

Yes, thank you. Popeyes all the way today! :lol
