"dying out" isn't the phrase i'd use. "returning to normal expectations" is probably the better way to say it. last year's evo numbers were neat but not sustainable.

Wow almost 63% drop from sfv when sfiv kept growing each year. I guess the 09ers have moved on with life. And hype for fgs are really dying out huh? Time from another dark ages?

Talk about dark ages (that never actually happened) when we have over a dozen fighters coming out within a year.

Still can't help but think Jebailey moving to Daytona next year is a mistake. 2016 CEO was an outlier for him, he hasn't outgrown his current venue notwithstanding the internet/streaming issues this year. Also, asking people to take the nearest airport and then drive a hour+ to Daytona is a lot to ask. Wish him luck on his newest venture, but it's a huge risk for CEO overall because it it doesn't work out, I don't know if they can back to Orlando, the whole organization might be wiped out.

there is an international airport in daytona but it's a bit more expensive to fly into. cheaper than taking a cab 75-90mins though.

how do I slip unnoticed out of a gloryhole booth?
It always comes from people that exclusively play Capcom.

SNK was hit way harder in the post-CvS2 years tbh. Clawing their way back from bankruptcy subsisting off of ports, court settlements, and those child molesting DS games? proper dark ages imo.

In terms of fighters between CVS2 and SF4, SNK released:

KOF2001
KOF2002
KOF2003
KOFXI
KOF: Neowave
KOF: Maximum Impact
KOF 98 UM
Rage of the Dragons
SNK vs Capcom: Chaos
Samurai Showdown V
Samurai Showdown V Special
Samurai Showdown VI
Matrimelee
Neo-Geo Battle Coliseum

So yeah, hardly just ports and DS games.

Dark ages only if were a street fighter/Capcom fan. Must have sucked being stuck with CVS2/3rd Strike/Marvel 2 if you didn't like those games.

Meanwhile it was the peak of 3D games with Soul Calibur, VF and Tekken having some of their best installments.

pardon the exaggeration on my part, but it was still rougher sailing than what anyone else was dealing with during the harrowing ~dark ages~ imo.

(98um and samsho slipped my mind, and I wasn't counting the eolith games. the rest I never found terribly compelling, tho i suppose i haven't played the power instinct games v much at all)

and DOA had a few high profile launches, right? wasn't one of them right around the 360 launch and got some buzz as a result?

DOA3 was a big deal on XB1 because it was exclusive and then DOA4 again was exclusive on 360.

That was back when Itagaki was relevant and talking mad shit about Tekken too.

Eolith was partially funded by the founder of SNK. KOF2001 was developed by them and Playmore and KOF2002 was developed by them and Brezzasoft (all ex SNK employees, also funded by the founder of SNK) so there isn't much point in cutting those games out of the equation.

The years were dark for SNK financially sure but they still released plenty of games in that time.

Rage of the Dragons so fun

Still hoping its characters make their way into KOF.

Pepe and Pupa pls.

This list reminds me of the something unrelated.

Samurai Shodown Sen was so, so, so very disappointing.

I suppose it also bears mentioning that during this period, after making SamSho V Special for SNK, Yuki Soft then went on to make Arcana Heart and rebranded themselves as Examu.

I'll take care of the EVO thread as usual. If anybody wants me to add anything, ya know.

Good thing EVO isn't this week. It's like 120° in Vegas.

Let's get it added to the list of things that Ono will fix.

Im just hoping it doesnt get WORSE. The graphic stuff isn't even maxed out yet right now in this build, and this iterative pro console stuff has me worried about parity differences as well for some players. Its a given standard is PS4 but will pro play differently than regular in frames of lag? What about X1 and X1X users? PC? Lots of ways to play this and I'm not certain what the best option will be for players or if things will get noticeably worse on any version of the game.

Im kind of hoping this isn't as good as it gets at even demo spec right now. I'd hate to see it reach 8 frames again like SFV by launch. Here's hoping more powerful consoles equate to better results too. This hasn't always been the case though.

6.1f isn't awful but it could be better. In the real world, you're almost never going to get below 4f. Even old arcade cabs still have 4f lag, so that's sorta my baseline for games.

People call it "The Dark Ages", because outside of Guilty Gear, there were next to no reasonably budgeted 2D fighting games. SNK games were budget games still running on hardware from the '80s, and the move to more "modern" hardware didn't do much favor. Pretty much every other 2D fighter was so niche it wasn't even released outside of Japan.

3D fighters and Smash were doing well, but traditional 2D fighters weren't very healthy. Around the time of Street Fighter IV's release, not only did Capcom get back to making games, but Arc System Works continued on by making an HD 2D fighter, Mortal Kombat went back to 2D, with NRS being a force in the genre, Killer Instinct was brought back, SNK finally updated their sprites to a notable extent, and pretty much every Japanese 2D fighter was localized. Implying that the health of the 2D fighting genre wasn't weak from 2002 to 2008 is being disingenuous.

6.1 is what MvC3 is on PS4. Probably fine.

Define "healthy" in an era without netplay and majors every weekend.
