Hi, it's Mad Catz's (Daigo) Umehara. Today I'll be showing off Hugo.
Hugo is what you'd call a grappler-type character. He has a command grab that you can use up close, and a high stamina rating.
For the existing characters in SSF4 so far, generally speaking, the weakness for grappler type characters is that their footsie tools are typically not very strong.
In Hugo's case, however, his normals are actually quite strong. So despite the way things look, he actually possesses a fairly strong footsies game.
Another one of Hugo's unique traits is that, although the existing grappler characters thus far typically have certain match-ups where they can't deal with an opponent character's jump-in options, Hugo actually has a pretty powerful anti-air option.
*Daigo performs Huge's Shootdown Backbreaker anti-air* ... and there you go. With this move, all of your anti-air needs are provided for.
When an opponent just keeps jumping in or jumping away from you (to escape the command throws), and there's nothing else you could do to prevent that, just throwing this out (Hugo's Shootdown Backbreaker) will solve your woes.
Also, *snickers* Hugo probably has the most number of ground-based overhead attacks in the entire game. [Hugo's overheads are] this move, this move... and this move as well. All of these are overheads.
As for special moves, Hugo has his Giant Palm attack. Despite the way this move looks, you're actually on frame advantage if Giant Palm is blocked. Using this move to lock down your opponent is one of the fundamental techniques required for playing Hugo, I believe.
[Other than the command throw we covered earlier,] Hugo has another command throw, which causes your opponent to bounce back from the wall, allowing you to combo further from it. The start-up for this second command grab is a little on the slow side, however. But the EX version of this move has invincibility frame properties, so it's fairly easy to create opportunities to use this command grab and the combo that comes after that.
Also, Hugo's Focus Attack has an incredibly fast start-up, which I think is pretty fascinating.
To counter your opponent's Focus Attacks, Hugo's lariat special move -- especially the EX version -- is particularly effective. So you do it... like this. And there you go, Focus Attack crushed.
(Next part of the video shows Daigo being impressed with Hugo's Meatsquasher move, a move that lets Hugo haul his opponent all the way till the other end of the screen.)
After spending some time with Hugo, my impression is that he is a character with a lot of unique traits about him, which makes him a pretty fun character to play. Even though at this point I've yet to go hands-on with a lot of the other characters in this series (Ultra Street Fighter 4), personally Hugo is one that I'd like to explore further when the game is finally out.
