Fighting Games Weekly | April 14-20 | Some Permutation of "Daigo is Da Bess"

How many characters in your respective currently played games can you guys play at a proficient level?

I can play about 8-10 characters at a relatively high level in AE, I change my main every basically every day. Been playing Dudley and Juri a lot lately though.

Well, I'm only playing AE atm, and I'm really trying to learn the game now more than ever, so until two months ago I only played Evil Ryu, but now I can play like 7 characters in a ok level, but the bad ryu guy is still my main (switching to Yang in ultra tho)

So, yesterday I was asking here where did Arturo gets his frame data info, I didn't get an answer, so I searched in Google Play for an app, and there's this one, which is godlike!

But, since Ultra is right on the corner, I didn't bought it, instead I sent an email to the publisher asking if he would update the apk once Ultra comes out or if he would release a completely new app.

He answered me right away, and, for my surprise, he told me that he will not only not update the app, he will take down all his sfiv apps from Google Play, because he hates the changes Capcom did on Ultra! Hates that, with delayed wake-up and srk fadc not being safe anymore, the game wile a lot more footsie heavy, and....he doesn't like that it looks like.

Well, if he not likes the game anymore, I respect him not updating the app and not caring about it anymore, but.....the salt man! THE SALT!

btw he plays Akuma

A lot in KOFXIII, I mostly play random select these days.

Akuma didn't even get nerfed... save for the 2 extra frames of recovery on jump back air fireball.

Every other change is completely fair.

I can play at a fairly high level with some of the cast, the ones I cant play at a high level I'm just totally ass with (Adon
fuck Adon
, Sagat
FUCK sagat.
, Gen, Dan, Blanka
FUCK Blanka and everybody who mains him
, Dhalsim, Ibuki, Makoto, Gouken
you already know what it is
, Rose, Hawk, Yang, Yun, Viper, Elf, Juri) ... As I was making this list, I started to notice that I'm ass with a lot of characters lol. The rest I can use well enough to comfortably counter pick with ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).

Also is there a Gaffer that has the gamer tag of RoknRolluh? Or something, I could swear there was.. if there is then I need that runback

I really hope Elena ends up being good. I'm obligated by NegroLaw™ To use and abuse every black character in the fighting games I play whether they're ass or not. (S/O to Tiger Jackson). After sticking with FreeJay for so long, I really hope they make Elena good.

If I don't feel I can get out of pools or deep in a smaller bracket with a character, I don't play that character proficiently. I really tend to focus on a solo character, in rare cases I get to 2. Too many people switch around and try to learn counterpicks, and they just make their game weaker.

ramen is like 7-3 for me.

My family makes pho and it was never on the same level as other noodle soups.

Wonton noodle soup and Ramen? SO GAWDLIKE. Ramen in Little Tokyo is godlike as well. I can see why pho is prefer over ramen in most places. Ramen from a low-mid tier place is just ass. Pho at a mid tier place is still solid. Ramen also has many different styles, so its common to not like one and then like another.

Shin Sen Gumi and Santouka are amazing

http://www.yelp.com/biz/hakata-ramen-shin-sen-gumi-los-angeles

For me its

S tier: Wonton Noodle Soup, Ramen, Tom Yum Soup
A tier; Pho

Santouka is the bomb! Probably because they are a real deal japanese chain. When I was in Tokyo my wife and I asked this guy what the best ramen place was and he said Santouka.

Sounds like a nice guy!
The fact that he's selling an app with data you can find anywhere else for free on the Internet is just icing on the cake... <3

Btw, Horseress, if you are looking for AE 2012 frame data infos, you can find them here: http://wiki.shoryuken.com/Super_Street_Fighter_IV_AE

If depends on the character (some characters need more counterpicking)- you shouldn't spread yourself too thin- I think 2 chars is good, provided they cover each other's worst matchups.

Playing slower chars like I tend to do these days, those bad matchups are so frustrating- it's the only time I ever curse involuntarily.

In Smash and BB, I sometimes find myself using at least 2 characters in a tourney. The 2nd one is usually for counterpicking purposes if I really need to. I'd say I'm proficient with more, but I don't cycle through all of them in a single day.

When I get back into SF4, I plan on doing the same.

In Super Turbo, Claw for sure. I can pull out a Guile if need be, but it's been a while since I used him (although I played him for the better part of five years in SF2).

In SF4, probably just Ryu and Sagat.

That's just silly.

What's also going to be useful is if the frame data from the previous versions is available. Even though edition select won't be an official part of most tournaments, I see it going that way in the future, and it's still useful for situations where edition select is allowed.

Daigo showing off Hugo

Hi, it's Mad Catz's (Daigo) Umehara. Today I'll be showing off Hugo.

Hugo is what you'd call a grappler-type character. He has a command grab that you can use up close, and a high stamina rating.

For the existing characters in SSF4 so far, generally speaking, the weakness for grappler type characters is that their footsie tools are typically not very strong.

In Hugo's case, however, his normals are actually quite strong. So despite the way things look, he actually possesses a fairly strong footsies game.

Another one of Hugo's unique traits is that, although the existing grappler characters thus far typically have certain match-ups where they can't deal with an opponent character's jump-in options, Hugo actually has a pretty powerful anti-air option.

*Daigo performs Huge's Shootdown Backbreaker anti-air* ... and there you go. With this move, all of your anti-air needs are provided for.

When an opponent just keeps jumping in or jumping away from you (to escape the command throws), and there's nothing else you could do to prevent that, just throwing this out (Hugo's Shootdown Backbreaker) will solve your woes.

Also, *snickers* Hugo probably has the most number of ground-based overhead attacks in the entire game. [Hugo's overheads are] this move, this move... and this move as well. All of these are overheads.

As for special moves, Hugo has his Giant Palm attack. Despite the way this move looks, you're actually on frame advantage if Giant Palm is blocked. Using this move to lock down your opponent is one of the fundamental techniques required for playing Hugo, I believe.

[Other than the command throw we covered earlier,] Hugo has another command throw, which causes your opponent to bounce back from the wall, allowing you to combo further from it. The start-up for this second command grab is a little on the slow side, however. But the EX version of this move has invincibility frame properties, so it's fairly easy to create opportunities to use this command grab and the combo that comes after that.

Also, Hugo's Focus Attack has an incredibly fast start-up, which I think is pretty fascinating.

To counter your opponent's Focus Attacks, Hugo's lariat special move -- especially the EX version -- is particularly effective. So you do it... like this. And there you go, Focus Attack crushed.

(Next part of the video shows Daigo being impressed with Hugo's Meatsquasher move, a move that lets Hugo haul his opponent all the way till the other end of the screen.)

After spending some time with Hugo, my impression is that he is a character with a lot of unique traits about him, which makes him a pretty fun character to play. Even though at this point I've yet to go hands-on with a lot of the other characters in this series (Ultra Street Fighter 4), personally Hugo is one that I'd like to explore further when the game is finally out.

Depends on the game; in general, if there's Ryu/Gief, they're automatic picks.

3s/ST, most of the cast. For Ultra, I'll probably end up using Hugo along with the above mentioned.

VF, mostly a Wolf/Lai player.

Do we have all this info somewhere? If so, I can make an app for Android with it, a very simple one, just to have that utility around

charging per character, having micro transactions and with hidden dlc, of course Kappa

Does anyone here who has played one of the Ultra builds know how easy or difficult anti-airing Rolento's j.MP and j.HP is with normals?

There should be an app that not only stores frame data but analyzes it. Print out potential links, potential punishes either way in a matchup, etc.

Yeah, some games are just counterpick heavy and some characters are just rough -_- I still see too many people these days thinking they have their characters down and ready for picks, then get stomped. A few people who were having MU issues here recently started learning counterpick characters, and it turned out way better for them to just learn the MUs with their mains. If you have a very good fundamental base and understand a game super well go for it, it's just hard to pull off. I'm tired of seeing mid level players shooting themselves in the foot ;_;

There should be an app that not only stores frame data but analyzes it. Print out potential links, potential punishes either way in a matchup, etc.

Pretty sure I saw a "frame data calculator" at some point to show people punish options. I didn't see why it was needed since most people know 3rd grade math.

@Conceited

ST: Dee-Jay, Vega - I might not beat top players in sets but I'm good enough to take matches off of them without it being a fluke

HDR: Cammy - Most of the community saw me as a top 5 XBL Cammy way back

3S: Yang - I suck. I know how to use his pokes but I can't parry yet.

AE: Dee-Jay, Rose - I have footsies and AA'ing but have no hit-confirms, mixups, nor do I use FADC effectively. I'm mediocre.

SFxT: Rolento, Law - I'm capable of beating good players but I lose more than I win

I'd probably be much better at AE if long-range poking and fireballs were more effective. I excel at turtle-style gameplay, not so much rushing in with focus and hit-confirming whatever.

SSF4AE Bits has this feature. I think its IOS only though.

Pretty much. If you're familiar with your character, it's not difficult to figure out links or punishes.

Because the frame data is normally not presented in a way that makes it easily to sort by startup.

Started playing VF5 FS again after a long while and spent some time practicing Eileen's combo strings and stuff. Until now I didn't utilize many of her different cancels and stances as I stuck mostly to what was presented in the command training (mainly forward P+K+G and 236 P). Can't believe I didn't realize this sooner as I felt like a whole bunch of opportunities opened up for me just now. Goddammit, I love this game so much.

Perhaps something like a match-up chart for each character, like entering Abel's page and then going to match-ups, then choosing a character and seeing what moves of this character Abel can punish, and with what move. Something like that would be cool

A character punish chart would be neat. It'd be a pain to mess with though because there's more to punishes than just whether something is negative. You'd have to have somebody fill it in for every character and blegh.

It's not the actual calculation that's hard, it's going through each possibility for an arbitrary frame data sheet and also for interactions between them.

Let's say I was playing Ultra and wanted to know frame advantage options with Vanilla Sagat vs AE Yang. Sure, I could do the math easily, but it'd be extremely tedious and time consuming when I could have a computer do it for me.

Only problem is that it doesn't take into account distance. It's only based on startup and the frame disadvantages of the moves.

This, plus oddball situations like meaties, weird hitbox interactions, other mechanics like pushblocking (god forbid a game has something like Tardy Cancels), etc.

I can "play" Sim, Bison, Balrog, Yang, and Guile at a reasonable level (i know what the buttons do, have a basic combo/punish/gameplan)

I wish I knew how to play; Abel, Makoto, Gief, Elf, Dudley.

I've been playing Gief since vanilla and I can tell you that no one has fun when gief is on the screen. Not the person using him and not the person playing against him. The matchups are boring.

How does double Ultra effect Juri? Her having access to Feng Shui Engine and her beat down ultra that she can combo into seems really good especially with red focus.

ST/HDR: Balrog because I'm a scumbag. Deejay because maracas.

Tekken: Lei because I'm a scumbag. King because growls.

VF: Brad because he's a scumbag.
