Fighting Games Weekly | December 31 - January 6 | 2013 brings some new challengers!

They had the implicit promise of funding on Day 1 assuming sales were good enough. AFAIK sales were indeed good enough, but that Reverge firing incident happened. Their current publisher is on record as wanting to support them further, but they don't have the money to do it at the moment because of litigation with Reverge.

if this was a year ago I would buy SG. But now I have so many fighting games that I can't justify another fighting game, esp one that I won't play often (friends).
 

I guess if that's intended to be sarcasm, I'll say that these are people who worked on the game unpaid to get it patched after they were let go in June, and they've been completely transparent about the development process of the game even while they were employed at Reverge. I figure they deserve at least some credit when they say something.

If it's just an affirmative, then cool.
 
Yeah, it's not a great place to be. I'm hoping this PSN sale helps them out, or gets some sort of traction going that they can use.
 
It's overwhelming at first but it's entirely rewarding once you get past that entry barrier. It's actually one of the most rewarding games you can play.

Quick steps.

1. Pick the character that fits your style. If you don't know, I recommend Anna. She don't require heavy execution but can be extremely deadly. A lot of beginners pick Alisa, though.
2. Go to practice. Go through the whole command list and perform each move, one move at a time. Memorize what you can. I understand each character has 100 to 170+ moves each. You can't be lazy.
3. Start with launchers (anything that launches the opponent into mid-air) and low moves that can lead to combos. This is where you experiment. You have memorized a lot of moves on the command list. Find the filler content for each launcher. Experiment with moves. Be creative. Then, you want to make sure you have learned all of the "bound" moves for your character. Each character has a good assortment of them. These moves are used mid-combo to put the opponent in a bound state on the ground. On the command list, they are indicated with a light green colored box icon. Any moves with a green box icon can be used on your opponent in mid-air to take them into a bound state. Following the bound move, you want to do a combo ender. Again, experiment with the command list you are provided.

If you are too lazy for this process, just youtube combo videos for whichever character you are using.

4. Learn strategies for getting up properly. Again, I've linked this video so many times now. If you end up being assaulted with juggles non-stop, it's entirely your own fault for not having learned the proper mechanics.

5. Learn spacing. Sidestepping, movement, it's all very crucial. Don't go running to the opponent. Be calm and patient. Sidestep often. Wait for the opponent to attack. PUNISH!

6. Guarding. So many beginners I've seen that literally let themselves get launched over and over. Don't let that be you. If you can't guard lows, backdash often and create space. Most launchers are punishable. If your opponent does a launcher, PUNISH!

If you don't know what to punish with yet, just press square, then triangle to do two quick jabs.

And you don't want to find yourself in this situation. A lot of beginners will mash or try different attacks in these scenarios. Just freaking stand there and block.
Thanks for the write-up. I'm going to try and make use of it today to see how I like. I think I might just make a list of 8 or so characters that appeal to me and I'll break that down to two teams. I know for a fact that I won't get into it like Vampire or Skullgirls, but reaching a point where I'm competent is enough for me so four characters it is. Maybe that'll change once I see climb to that point.
Leo has easy stuff and works well with just about anyone on the roster. Or you can go the easy route and use Lee and Violet together since they are 96% the same character.
Yeah, I noticed this immediately yesterday. I chose him like two minutes before your post and thought the game must have majorly glitched on me or something haha. It seems like a good idea at first, but I'd like to have some variety in there for the sake of throwing my opponents off.
As Famicom said, Leo pretty much complements any character well. If two characters at a time is too much, then you can use Lee who plays almost exactly similar to Violet.

But I've also found Jinpachi to be one of the characters that plays and completes other characters well. He's really easy to use too.
I'll keep that in mind. The opening scene with him in the cab was absolutely amazing lol.
Feng is a pretty easy character that works well with anyone.
I'll try him out today so I can see for myself.

Justin Wong almost won a Marvel 2 money match with random select.

I think, either random select or selected shitty characters which might be worse.

The DarkPrince MM? I believe it started out with Justin saying he could beat him with a random ass team and named random characters (ruby heart, jill, ken) and DPrince called him out on it.
 
Doesn't seem like too many people are good at it, which is a shame. Random select tournaments would be a lot of fun if people were actually decent at it.

Why are you excluding so many other games?

Well I'm thinking of recent fighters. A lot of the knowledge from mvc3, sf4, and so on transfers over pretty well. BB, P4A, SG, TTT2, KOF13, and etc not so much. Correct me if I'm wrong.


O I forgot, you could do one with DOA since you can just mash p and k together and go somewhere with it in a RSelect tourney.

UMVC3 random select sucks because one player is bound to randomly get better team synergy than the other (good assist chosen, etc.), or get one of his/her main characters chosen. Single character random select is reasonably good, though.

Yeah I was about to add that in. Triple random select in UMVC3 is complete garbage even for casual play. Single random select where you can go back and select your assists and re-order your team is MUCH MUCH better.

Yea, you're wrong. The differences between characters don't matter that much if you actually know how to play the character. The main thing I would consider a barrier to playing random select is how much time you actually dedicate to playing the entire cast. I imagine that most players don't approach the games like that.

Aside from Marvel's team random screwing you over really hard, I doubt there's any fighter that's ineligible for random.

Yeah, there is a decent chance of getting a good character in 1v1 random.

There is no chance of getting a good random team in UMvC3.

You can't do that in P4A outside maybe 5AAAAAAA auto combo, and I assume the same with BB (not like BB has a healthy tournament size to begin with in NA outside certain events).

If you don't know what a character's special commands are, it's because you haven't taken the time to press pause with the character in training mode. It's not like the commands are something you aren't familiar with, and it's not like a move's use and utility are going to be something you haven't seen before. That problem is easily addressed by just playing around with the characters for a bit on a somewhat regular basis.

And while BB and P4A characters do have unique playstyles, you'd be able to figure out most special moves midmatch if you really wanted to. The only thing that might be unintuitive is 22 moves in BB. P4A especially probably has the most simplified command lists in a modern traditional fighter.
